Literary Analysis

(Symbolism in “THE GRAVE”)

As you analyze the title of the story, “The Grave” of Katherine Anne
Porter, it seems to be literally about a two children, Miranda and Paul,
Who were just playing and hunting some rabbits and doves using their
rifle. Later on they across to their grandfather’s grave.
But it is not just about that, in this story, it is actually about
realization of age, maturity, realizing of who you are. If you notice
about the dove, the ring, the rabbit, the grave, it has it’s own
representation or what we call symbolizes; like the dove it symbolizes
for peace, while the gold ring is the representation for Miranda’s
femininity. On the other hand, the focus on the story is about Miranda.
Miranda is a nine-year old innocent girl, she used to call ‘tomboy’ up
until she

realizes that she is growing tired of being a ‘tomboy’  and yearns for the
trappings of femininity: pretty clothes, jewelry, and perfumes. The story
also concludes the ‘ADULT’ Miranda, perhaps, nearing thirty (30)
reflecting on her mind nor memories. As her knowledge was starting to
be wide and looking perfect, there comes a time that Miranda, seeing
herself as a mother. In this moment of her life, it looks like it reminded
her that she is no longer a carefree innocent child; Up until she taken her
first steps becoming a woman though. As the story goes by, you’ll notice
that the word “GRAVE” was not mention in ‘every sentence’ that you
will see. But in this story the word “GRAVE’ has several meanings; like
for example those empty graves symbolizes nor it represents maturity
and experience. The literal grave is what the children are playing in
when they find the dove, ring and rabbit.
I can say that this story of ‘Katherine Anne Porter’ was one of the
good and understandable story I’ve ever read, because she used objects
as a mark to easily identify of what she was talking about in her own
story. The main point of her story, for me, was about growing up
and going through a kind of initiation into the mysteries of adult life. It
is thus the story of the discovery of truth. Because there is a part of the
story that, Miranda learns to discover of what literally she is, she knew
her own destiny as a woman; she learned these things unexpectedly
without knowing birth is connect with death.

As ‘MANLY HALL’ says; “ SYMBOLISM IS THE LANGUAGE OF

MYSTERIES. BY SYMBOLS MEN HAVE EVER SOUGHT TO
COMMUNICATE TO EACH OTHER THOSE THOUGHTS WHICH
TRANSCEND THE LIMITATIONS OF LANGUAGE.
