## Learning Insight

To connect to people effectively is far more critical than communicating. In this report I’ve learned that
being able to make connections and to communicate effectively is a skill and not a natural talent. In
making an impactful connection towards other people requires a lot of consideration such as making
adjustments based on the preference of the other person. It sometimes requires to make adjustments
as people don’t have the same skill to easily connect and communicate for being a people-oriented and
or extrovert while others are not. This implies that making an impactful connection is critical and the
following methods which I will include in this insight paper would help.

In the Tourism and Hospitality Industry, making connections requires sensitivity and high level of
understanding about their needs and their preferences so as a customer provider you will be able to
provide the right service that will satisfy them. With this, listening and communication skills are essential
to effectively connect to people despite the differences. Establishing the common ground between the
communicator and the listener encourages both parties the openness, trust and loyalty. The
communicator here, can share his or her ideas and thoughts freely while the listener can absorb the
information easily and provide feedback to measure the understanding and effectivity.

To make a meaningful connection, the connector needs to communicate his or her thoughts and ideas
first “effectively”, as this will build the common ground in both parties for similarities which leads to
have a deep level of connection and understanding.

As future tourism professionals, what are you going to do to become a good connector that finds
common ground and keep things simple?

As a future tourism practitioner, and to be a good connector in the field, I should have a good
communication skill to effectively communicate towards my clients. Communication is the key tool to
determine the needs and wants of my clients which my basis on what kind of type of service they want
and area where I can provide a satisfactory customer service. Good connector means you can effectively
communicate yourself to other people which is same thing to the listener.
Creating a meaningful connection is to build positive relationships towards other people, be sensitive
enough to understand them also. In this way you know how to approach them properly, meaning based
on their preference or for both common grounds. Common ground in communication is a part of the
process where both the connector or the communicator and listener have the same level of ideas where
they can connect openly. Open communication is one of the most effective forms of communication as
this creates an impactful and meaningful connections. This encourages a smooth flow of communication
process by keeping things simple.

Simple and direct form of communication is preferred in the tourism and hospitality industry for having
a diverse people. This approach as a way to connect to other people allow the communicator to
effectively communicate despite the differences and diversity. Communicating with a short, clear and
concise information allow the listener to easily digest and understand the meaning of the message and
by sharing the right means the message is rightfully conveyed and processed.

To communicate effectively requires a lot of effort and consideration which considered a “skill” much
more in making a meaningful connection to other people. In our report, we highlighted that to connect
to people, you need to have a good communication skill, and do it effectively.

Good communicator means you are not only delivering your message to your recipient or your listener,
but most importantly to make the message simple for them in a way where they can understand it
easily. The goal is to connect and not to impress, as the more lengthy or stilted language is use which
you try to impress, you cannot connect. Communicator’s here needs to bring clarity to a subject, not
complexity because the measure of a great communicator isn’t what he or she knows, it’s the recipient
or the audience know. Being well-versed in words, and great accent will no use if the message for the
listener is hard to comprehend and processed, it should be delivered based on the preference and level
of understanding of the listener.

Having a meaningful connection between the communicator and listener linked in a direct and simple
approach in communication, which considered also as the best in all forms of communication. This
approach delivers a message that is clear, concise and impactful, leaving the audience with great clarity;
the main goal to connect.

As an aspirant Tourism practitioner, how do you think the business communication helps you to your
career path that you are pursuing? Does being real in front of your communicating with is a right thing
to do as a tourism professional?

Tourism industry is one of the emerging industries yet the most challenging one. This industry requires a
people-oriented workers with good communication skills as for it is a service-oriented industry. In this
kind of industry, the customers are the top most priority from their safety, and the satisfactory service
that you need to provide them. An aspiring flight attendant someday, being knowledgeable about
business communication is essential as this is the main tool to communicate and connect to customers
in knowing their needs and wants to provide the appropriate service in their requirements and
preferences.

Being knowledgeable about business communication allow me to approach things properly meaning in a
way that is acceptable, respectful to any type people as this industry served to a diverse type of people
as well as the environment. Having the right attitude and commendable on this aspect encourages to
provide a good impression towards the customers and to the company. Business communication implies
in the workplace to provide a quality work, encourages professionalism and good working environment.
This also allows the collaboration over competition in the workplace, tasks would be accomplished
productively and allowing also to build a meaningful connection between customers but also with co-
workers and management.

Expressing your true self and by showing and taking care of the customers in the most genuine way is
surely the right thing to do as tourism professionals. This will allow to build a positive-customer
relationship, trust and loyalty from them. In this way, as practitioners we are also making contributions
to the company by bringing loyal customers and acquire repeatedly those services of the business.
