1. PRIOR TO USE
■ Read this manual thoroughly before using this instrument to ensure
proper and safe operation.
■ Always follow the operation procedures as described in this manual.
■ Check that there are no devices that generate a strong magnetic field
near the instrument.
A strong magnetic field may cause noise and affect measurement.
1-1 ■
- Install the instrument in a level, stable location free of vibration or
mechanical impact. Otherwise, measurement cannot be conducted
correctly. Also, the instrument may topple or fall, resulting in fire or
serious accident.
- Check the power supply (discharge condition, polarity, etc.).
- Check that the date set in the instrument conforms to the actual
operation date and time.
- Do not lean on the instrument or press on the instrument from the top.
The instrument may topple over, resulting in mechanical failure or
injuries.
- If any problem is found with the instrument, take appropriate action such
as halting operation.
- If problems such as smoke, unusual odor or abnormal sound occur, turn
the instrument off immediately, disconnect the power cord from the
outlet, and contact Tomey Corporation or your local distributor.
- When cutting the printer paper, pull the paper downward to press it
against the cutter blade and then draw the paper sideways. If the paper is
not applied to the blade appropriately, the paper may become jammed or
the printer may be damaged.
■ 1-2

3. OPERATION PROCEDURES
3.1 Safety precautions
3.1.1 Precautions for installing the instrument
- Install the instrument in a place where disconnecting the power cord can
be done smoothly, for situations where the power must be cut off due to
a problem with the instrument.
- Install the instrument so that the user can use the system under optimal
conditions. Carefully connect the devices so that the wiring does not
disconnect unintentionally during operation, and does not hinder
operation of the instrument.
3-1 ■
3.2 Preparation before use
3.2.1 Connection of external device
- The external output terminals are not isolated from the internal circuit.
Inappropriate wiring may damage the internal circuit.
■ 3-2
3.2.2 Turning the power on
Connect the power cord to the power terminal and insert the power cord into the outlet.
Turn on the power switch. Confirm the following before turning power on.
・ The nose piece is firmly secured.
・ The protective glass under the nose piece is clean.
・ There is no lens set on the nose piece.
・ There is no dust or dirt on the nose piece tip.
- Place the lens on the nose piece after the measurement screen appears.
“INITIAL ERROR” occurs when power is turned on with a lens on the
nose piece.
- When turning power on while the nose piece for measuring contact
lenses is set, a buzzer goes off after the startup screen appears and an
error message appears.
- Enter contact lens measurement mode after turning power on.
(Do not turn power on while the nose piece for measuring contact lenses
is mounted.)
- Slowly lower the lens holder. If the lens holder is lowered rapidly, the lens
may be damaged.
3-3 ■
3.2.5 Replacing the nose piece
1) Attach the CL nose piece in contact lens measurement mode, and the spectacle nose
piece for measuring spectacle glasses in spectacle glass measurement mode.
2) The measurement mode automatically switches to “CL” mode when the nose piece is
replaced with the CL nose piece in single lens measurement mode.
■ 3-4
3.3 Measurement procedures
- Lenses may be damaged if forced against the nose piece or moved
rapidly. Check that there is no dust on the nose piece tip and that the
nose piece is not worn.
- Because cylindrical lenses and plano lenses do not have an optical
center, the target may not be aligned with the center.
- Touch the “Clear” button to delete all measurement data saved in the
memory.
- When PD is not being measured, place the nose block on the left end.
- The measured value may not be identical to the value indicated on the
lens.
(Fig. 1) (Fig. 2)
1) Place the lens on the nose piece for measuring so that the front faces up, move the lens
table, and measure the lens while the lower edges of both sides of the spectacle frame
are in contact with the lens table.
2) Slowly move the lens so that the target comes to the center of the target area.
3) When the optical center of the lens is aligned with the center of the target area, the
target mark becomes larger. When the “Auto Hold” function is ON, the measured value
is automatically read. If the Auto Hold function is OFF, press the “Hold” button to
manually read the measured data.
4) The target mark disappears when the lens is removed from the nose piece.
When PD measurement is set to ON, moving the nose block to the left and right
switches left and right eyes.
(PD measurement is available only for TL-7000.)
5) When both lenses have been measured, the measurement result appears.
6) Touching the “Clear” button deletes the measurement data and returns to the
measurement screen for the first lens.
3-5 ■
3.3.2 Automatic detection of a progressive lens
When the “Auto Prog” function is ON and a progressive lens is placed on the nose
piece for spectacle glasses while the monolens measurement screen is open, the
instrument automatically detects the lens as a progressive lens and switches the
measurement mode to “PROG”.
(Fig. 1) (Fig. 2)
- Place the center of the lens on the nose piece for spectacle glasses.
The instrument may not be able to correctly detect a progressive lens
from a peripheral section of the lens even when set.
- When the addition (ADD value) is 1D or lower, automatic detection may
not be possible.
- When the “Auto Prog” function is activated, the measurement mode may
switch to PROG mode if the lens is tilted when placed. If the mode is
switched by mistake, select the monofocal lens measurement screen
again to change the mode. When the Auto Prog function is deactivated,
the instrument does not automatically detect the lens type or change the
mode to PROG.
■ 3-6
3.3.3 Measuring a progressive lens (PROG mode)
a) Measurement procedures
(Back) Lens table
Measurement is conducted according to the steps below.
(3) Near point
(1) Detecting the progressive area
(1) Progressive
(2) Measuring the far point

(2)
(1)
(Fig. 1)
1) The far point is nearest to you. Move the lens forward to bring the target (1) to the
center (2).
2) Align the target with the center. When the “Auto Hold” function is ON, the value of the
far point is automatically read. When the Auto Hold function is OFF, touch the “HOLD”
button to read the value.
3) When the far point value has been read, the screen changes to measure the near point.
(1)
(2)
(Fig. 2)
1) The near point is on the lower side of the lens. Move the lens to the front to bring the
target (1) to the center (2).
2) Align the target with the center. When the Auto Hold function is ON, the value of the
near point is automatically read. When the Auto Hold function is OFF, touch the “HOLD”
button to read the value.
3) The measurement results are displayed on the screen.
■ 3-8
3.3.4 Measuring bifocal/trifocal lenses
a) Measurement procedures
Take measurements at the far point and then near point for a bifocal lens (far point,
middle point and then near point for a trifocal lens).
Take measurements on the monofocal lens measurement screen. The screen changes
according to the measurement points.
(Fig. 3) (Fig. 4)
1) Place the lens on the nose piece for measuring spectacle glasses so that the front faces
up, move the lens table, and measure the far points while the lower edges of both sides
of the spectacle frame are in contact with the lens table.
2) Move the lens to the front to align the near point with the nose piece and measure the
near point. (In the case of a trifocal lens, align the middle point with the nose piece,
measure the middle point, and then measure the near point.)
3) When both lenses have been measured, the measurement result appears. (The
secondary addition is only displayed in the case of a trifocal lens.)
- When removing the lens while reading the far point or near point, the
screen automatically returns to the far point measurement screen.
3-9 ■
3.3.5 Measuring contact lenses (CL mode; CL holder mode)
- Always measure contact lenses in CL mode or CL holder mode with the
nose piece for measuring contact lenses attached. Errors occur in
measured values when measurement is taken in monofocal
measurement mode.
- The cylindrical refraction (“C” value) may appear for a contact lens used
for a long period because the lens has deformed.
(1)
(Fig. 1)
Back
(Fig. 2)
Front
1) Replace the nose piece with the CL nose piece and change the measurement screen.
2) Select the “CL Holder” (1).
3) Place a hard contact lens on the hard CL holder with the outer surface of the lens facing
up.
4) Place the hard CL holder on the CL nose piece so that the “RL” indication shows on the
back side.
5) Move the holder to center the lens.
- The following types of contact lenses can be measured using the hard CL
holder.
When measuring other lenses, place the lens directly on the CL nose
piece and conduct measurement in CL mode; otherwise large
measurement errors may be introduced.
Power : -15D to +15D
Base curve : 7.35mm to 8.25mm
Diameter : 8.0 mm to 9.6 mm
■ 3-10
b) Measuring a hard contact lens (without using the hard CL holder)
1) Replace the nose piece with the CL nose piece and change the measurement screen.
2) Place the lens on the CL nose piece with the outer surface of the lens facing up.
3) Move the lens to center it.
- Because it is difficult to maintain the proper shape of the lens due to the
nature of the lens, precise measurement is difficult.
3-11 ■
3.3.7 Measuring prisms
1) A prism can be indicated in the following three ways. Select the prism display mode on
the primary setting screen or the “Function” setting screen. Set “Total Prism” display to
show the total prismatic power of right and left lenses.
- When there is a prism, the target is not aligned with the center of the
target area because of the prismatic power, and the “Auto Hold” function
is not available.
■ 3-12
a) Measuring the prism of a monofocal lens
(Fig. 1)
1) The examiner and the patient face each other, approximately 40 cm apart.
2) The examiner covers his/her right eye and instructs the patient to look at the examiner's
left eye.
3) Mark a small dot (1-mm diameter or smaller) on the right lens to indicate the center of
the pupil.
4) The examiner covers his/her left eye and instructs the patient to look at the examiner's
right eye.
5) Similar to the right lens, mark a small dot (1-mm diameter or smaller) on the left lens to
indicate the center of the pupil.
6) Set the position of the marked dot and press the HOLD button to measure the prismatic
power. The target appears at a point outside the center of the target area according to
the measured prismatic power.
7) Repeat these steps to measure the left lens.
8) When both lenses have been measured, the prism values of the lenses appear. When
“Total Prism” is ON, the total prismatic power of both lenses is also displayed.
3-13 ■
c) Measuring the prism of a progressive lens
Lens mark
(Fig. 1)
1) Mark a dot at the position for measuring the far point. Find the two lens marks, and
place dots on these marks with a felt pen and the center between them with the marking
unit.
2) Then place a dot at a position approximately 5 - 10 mm above the marked center dot as
the point for measuring the far point.
5 – 10 mm
Lens mark
Lens mark (Fig. 2)
Middle point
3) Set the marked position for measuring the far point on the nose piece and touch the
“HOLD” button to take the measurement. The target appears at a point outside the
center of the area according to the measured prismatic power.
* The prismatic degree and power of the far point vary depending on the position of the
measured point. When measuring the prism in this manner, consider possible errors
beforehand.
4) Measure the addition as usual for the near point.
■ 3-14
3.3.8 Simple map preparation
After measuring progressive lenses, the C-value map of the measured lens can be
prepared.
(Fig. 1) (Fig. 2)
1) After measuring the progressive lens, touch the simple map preparation button to open
the simple map preparation screen.
* Measure the PD and “L” value when measuring the progressive lens before preparing
the map. If the PD and “L” value are not used, the position information of the lens
cannot be correctly obtained and the accuracy of the map lowers significantly.
2) Touch the “HOLD” button to start preparation of the map.
3) Take a measurement at an arbitrary point using the nose block and lens table.
Measured sections are colored on the screen.
4) Touch the “HOLD” button again when points to be included in the map have been
measured.
5) The completed C-value map appears.
(Fig. 3) (Fig. 4)
- This function is designed to visualize the clear vision area and area of
astigmatic aberration. However, measurement using the PD and “L”
value needs to be performed to obtain correct positional information.
With certain spectacle glasses, if measurement is performed without using
the PD or “L” value, the simple map preparation may not be available.
(PD and L value measurement functions are available only for TL-7000)
3-15 ■
3.3.9 Visual recognition support for lens marks
The visual recognition support screen for lens marks of the progressive multifocal lens is
opened.
(1) (Fig. 1)
1) Touch the lens mark visual recognition support button to enter the lens mark visual
recognition support screen.
2) Hold the lens on which lens mark needs to be checked toward the screen, and check
the lens mark.
* The pattern and size can be changed by swiping vertically and horizontally on the
screen.
3) Touch the button (1) to return to the progressive multifocal lens measurement screen.
■ 3-16
3.4 Calculating refractive index of lenses
Use a spherometer to obtain the refractive power of the lens to be measured.
(3)
(1)
(4)
(2)
(Fig. 1)
(Fig. 2)
Measuring the front dioptry (D1)
- The refractive power of the spherometer here (D1 and D2) is the value
obtained when the refractive index of the lens is 1.523. If the refractive
index of the lens measured by your spherometer is not 1.523, set the
appropriate refractive index for your spherometer.
The refractive index of the spherometer is able to be varied within the
range of 1.400 < ne < 1.900.
The new values are saved in the memory and are retained even after
turning power off.
- When measuring an aspherical lens, errors of 0.03 - 0.05 may occur in the
calculated refractive index.
- When measuring a progressive lens or progressive lens exclusively for
reading, enter the value read by the spherometer at the measured far
point or near point.
However, if a progressive area covers the measured far point or near
point, measurement cannot be completed correctly by the spherometer
and errors may occur in the refractive index obtained.
3-17 ■
1) Set “Auto Hold” “OFF”.
2) Secure the lens with the lens holder when the target is aligned with the center.
3) Touch the “HOLD” button to read the measurement data and then mark points on the
lens.
4) Touch the “CAL” button to change the screen to the refractive index measurement
screen.
5) Touch the refractive index field (1) to activate it when you need to change the refractive
index of a spherometer. Touch the “Default” button (2) to reset the value to the default
(1.523).
6) Remove the lens from the nose piece and measure the diopter of the lens using the
spherometer. Place the lens on the level table, apply the spherometer in the direction of
the marked points, and read the value of the spherometer (D1: front dioptry). Repeat to
measure the diopter of the opposite side (reverse side) (D2: back dioptry).
7) Touch the D1 or D2 entry field (3) to select an item and enter a value using the keypad
to display the refractive index of the measured lens (4). Enter values from +25D to -25D
for D1 and D2. Otherwise an error occurs and "ERROR!" appears in the calculation
result. An error also occurs when the sum of D1 and D2 is 0.

6. TROUBLESHOOTING
Check the following first in the event of any problems.
If the problem is not solved even after checking the applicable item listed below, contact
your local distributor to request inspection and/or repair.
Faulty fuse
Check that fuses are not blown.
If blown, replace the fuse.
If the new fuse blows again, the instrument may be faulty.
Contact your local distributor to request inspection and/or repair.
● The instrument stops with the initial error message displayed on the initial screen.
A lens or other object is on the nose piece when starting the instrument.
Remove the lens or object from the nose piece and restart the instrument.
6-1 ■
● Values of "S," "C," and "A" are not "0" although there is no lens on the nose piece.
Measurement is conducted but the data is faulty.
The nose piece is tilted when set.
Set the nose piece appropriately and restart the instrument.
● The PD value is not displayed when the PD measurement nose block is moved.
The PD measurement nose block is not reset.
Move the PD measurement nose block to the left end (stopper position).
● The “Auto R/L” function does not work when the next lens is set.
The “Auto R/L” function on the “Measurement” tab is set to "OFF."
Set “Auto R/L” “ON”.
The instrument does not detect that the lens has been replaced.
Remove the lens from the nose piece for measuring spectacle glasses when
measurement is complete and set another lens after the target disappears.
■ 6-2
6.2 General operation for measuring lenses
● The target is not aligned with the center of the target area. / The “Auto Hold” function
does not work.
A monofocal lens with a spherical power ("S" value) of 0.0D and which only
has a cylindrical power ("C" value) was measured.
When a monofocal lens only has a cylindrical power ("C" value) and its
spherical power ("S" value) is 0.0D, the optical center is not a single point but
exists as a line. Therefore, the target cannot be aligned with the center of the
target area and the Auto Hold function does not work. In this case, touch the
“HOLD” button to read the value measured in the physical center of the lens.
A progressive power lens with a spherical power ("S" value) of 0.0D was
measured.
No optical center exists on a progressive power lens with a spherical power
("S" value) of 0.0D. Therefore, the target cannot be aligned with the center of
the target area and the Auto Hold function does not work. In this case, move
the lens slightly back, forth, to the right and left at a point approximately 10 -
15 mm above the center of the spectacle frame, and touch the "HOLD" button
at the position where there is least fluctuation of the SPH value to take the
measurement.
● At the time of measurement, the target was aligned with the center when the lens is
significantly offset to the nasal or temporal side within the spectacle frame.
A prism lens was measured.
Refer to “3.3.7 Measuring prisms”.
6-3 ■
6.3 Measuring progressive power lenses
● The screen does not change to the far point measurement screen.
The addition is small for a progressive lens with an addition (ADD) of 1D or
lower, or for progressive lenses for computers or for intermediate and near
points, so the target may not be aligned with the center of the target area when
detecting the progressive area.
There is a progressive zone near the center of the lens.
Set the lens at the approximate area and touch the "HOLD" button to display
the far point measurement screen.
