WORKSHOP Nº 06 – Statistical measures of dispersion
Código: MCAF-004 Versión: 01 Fecha de actualización: 07/02/2018
For example, the data sets 1 , 4 , 5 , 5 ,6 ,7 , 8 , 9 , 9 and 4 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 6 , 7 ,7 ,7 , 8 both have a mean value of 6. However, the first
data set is more widely spread than the second data set as you can see in the dot plots below.
Two commonly used statistics that indicate the spread of a data set are:
The range
The range
The range is the difference between the maximum or largest data value, and the minimum or smallest data value.
Example
4, 7, 5, 3, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 5, 3, 8, 9, 3, 6, 5, 6
Solution
Searching through the data set, the minimum value is 3, and the maximum value is 9. Then,
range=9−3=6
Figure 1
Figure 2.
The middle value of the lower half is called the lower quartile or Q 1. One quarter or 25% of the data have values less than or
equal to the lower quartile. 75% of the data have values greater than or equal to the lower quartile (Figure 2).
The middle value of the upper half is called the upper quartile or Q 3. One quarter or 25% of the data have values greater than or
equal to the upper quartile. 75% of the data have values less than or equal to the upper quartile (Figure 2).
The data set is thus divided into quarters by the lower quartile Q 1, the median Q 2, and the upper quartile Q 3 .
The interquartile range is the range of the middle half of the data.
or
IQR=Q3 −Q1
Example 01
1. median
3. interquartile range
Solution
n+1 th
1. Since n=15, =8 , the median is the 8th score, which if 5.

Datum 2 3 3 3 4 5 5 5 5 6 6 7 7 8 9
2. As the median is a data value, we now ignore it and split the remaining data into two haves:
3. IQR=Q3 −Q1=7−3=4
Example 02

3. interquartile range
Solution
