3. Reading

READING DOGS

My dog Snowy is a “reading dog”. Snowy and I volunteer at a local school. He helps a seven-year-old
girl called Ella to improve her reading. Reading aloud to others helps children improve their reading,
but Ella missed a lot of school last year because she was ill, so she didn’t learn to read as well as her
friends. Now, Ella doesn’t want to read in class because the other students laugh at her when she
makes mistakes. But she loves reading to Snowy!

Every Wednesday, Snowy and I meet Ella in the school library. Ella and Snowy are always excited to
see each other, and Snowy’s arrival always gets a lot of attention from the other students. Snowy and
Ella sit on the carpet and Ella is not embarrassed to read to Snowy. He sits there quietly and listens
while she reads. He doesn’t criticize or correct her and, of course, he never laughs at her. He always
looks interested in what Ella is saying. Snowy and Ella only started reading together four months ago,
but Ella can already read almost as well as the other students.

Like most people, I was surprised to hear about reading dogs. I couldn’t believe they could help, but I
soon changed my mind. Reading to a dog helps children make amazing progress. The children
improve not only their reading skills but also their behaviour. Noisy children become calmer and shy
children become more confident. I’m sorry I didn’t have a reading dog when I was at school!

9. Reading to a dog doesn’t help to improve children’s manners TRUE FALSE

10. The narrator had a reading dog when he/she was at school TRUE FALSE
