What’s GIS
GIS, Gas Insulated Switchgear, is gas-insulated metal-
enclosed switchgear.
• Insulation is obtained, at least partly, by an insulating gas other
than the air at atmospheric pressure.
• Switchgear assemblies with an external metal enclosure that is
earthed
Insulation gas: SF6 or others (yellow parts)
Enclosure: Aluminum or Iron, totally earthed and dead (blue parts)
Compartment: totally enclosed, tightened and sealed.
Partition: gas barrier to separate one compartment from another (green parts)
Support insulator: internal insulator to support the conductor (green parts)
Main-circuit: live and conductive parts that carry the current (red parts)

SF6 basics
Widely applied in power industry in past
decades, all sorts of switchgear, AIS (LT, DT),
HYBRID, GIS, GCB...up to 10,000tons per
year

• Perfect Insulation Medium, much higher dielectric • Extremely potent green house gas: 23,500
strength than dry air and nitrogen; self-healing after times global warming potential of CO2
arcing
• Persistent in air: 3200 years
• Non-flammable
• SF6 concentration in atmosphere rises
