ACTIVITY 1: TABLE TENNIS

1. Make a timeline on the historical background of table tennis from 1880’s to date.
 1880 The Beginning - Table tennis began in the 1880s when Tennis players
adapted the game to be played indoors on a small scale.
 1890 “Ping-Pong” - In the late 1800s table tennis adopted the trademark name of
Ping-Pong by the Parker Brothers game company, after the name was invented by
the English firm J. Jaques and Son.
 1922 Ping-Pong Association - The Ping-Ping Association was formed and then
renamed the Table Tennis Association in 1922. This is important because this
shows that table tennis began getting more recognition as a sport.
 1926 World Championships - The first World Championships were held in
London in 1926. This started the world's recognition of the sport on the
competitive level.
 APR 24, 1927 English Table Tennis Association - After being introduced years
before to England, the English Table Tennis Association was formed in 1927.
This event marks the expansion of table tennis to other parts of the world.
 1950 Rubber - In the 1950s, paddles switched to an outside rubber sheet and
underlying sponge padding to enhance the speed and spin of the game.
 1960 Beer Pong - Beer Pong emerged out of Table Tennis in fraternities from
Dartmouth in the 1950s and 1960s. This marks the evolution of the game into
social culture and integrating young people into the game.
 1972 Ping-Pong Diplomacy - During the Cold War tensions were high between
China and the US. Through table tennis the countries were able compete
peacefully.
 1988 Olympics - Table Tennis is first played in the Olympics in Seoul 1988. This
event marks the international recognition of the sport and the love of the game
worldwide.
 JUN 23, 1994 Forrest Gump - In Forest Gump, Forest is seen playing table
tennis and being part of Ping-Pong Diplomacy. This scene in Forrest Gump brings
table tennis's importance in history to the silver screen in a classic movie.

Born on 20th October 1988, Ma Long is prominent table tennis player from China, a
record winner of 5 consecutive ITTF Tour tournaments with a streak of 35 sets.

Long’s Achievements:-
 Secured gold in the Asian Games which was held in Guangzhou in the year 2010
 Emerged out as the winner of All China Table Tennis Championships in the year 2011
 Won the World Cup in men’s singles, convened in Liverpool in the year 2012
 Won a gold medal in men’s team event at the 2012 Summer Olympics, held in London
 Winner of the China National Games in the year 2013
 World Cup winner at Halmstad in the year 2015
 International Table Tennis Federation (IITF) ranked him No.1 in the world in the
year 2016
 Winner of Men’s singles at the Rio Olympics in 2016, held in Brazil

Chen Meng (Chinese, born 15 January 1994) is a Chinese table tennis player. She is the
women's singles champion of the ITTF World Tour Grand Finals in 2017, 2018, and
2019. She is also the silver medalist of women's singles in the 2019 World
Championships. She was the winner of the 2011 World Junior Table Tennis
Championships in girls' singles.

Lariba was born in Cagayan de Oro on October 13, 1994. She took up table tennis at age 9 with
her parents encouraging her to take up "something new" for the summer. Prior to taking up the
sport, Lariba played badminton at a sports complex in Cagayan de Oro but found herself to be
too small for the sport at that time. At the age of 10, coach Noel Gonzales of the Philippine
national table tennis team discovered Lariba while playing in the Palarong Pambansa. Just a year
after taking up table tennis, she started to participate in provincial and national competitions. She
also played for the varsity team of the Corpus Christi School.
Lariba attended De La Salle University for her college studies, majoring in management in
financial institutions.
