Prokaryotic Knowledge + Skill Check

If you can do these things, you are ready for the Prokaryotes assessment 

Learning Target 1.1: Explain the features of prokaryotic life

 What are the general features of a prokaryote? How are they different from eukaryotes?

 How do you draw and label the 8 parts of a typical E. coli bacteria?

 What are the functions of the 8 parts of a typical E. coli bacteria?

 How does the process of binary fission work?

 How do bacterial populations change over time (graph)?

Learning Target 1.2: Evaluate the use of scientific tools to observe and discover.
 How do SEM and TEM microscopes work? Why is their resolution smaller and magnification
higher than light microscopes?

 Given an example image, what type of microscope (SEM/TEM) took the image? What is your
evidence?

 What is resolution? What is magnification? What are the resolutions of the eye, light
microscope, and electron microscope?

 Given an example image, what cell structures can you identify?

Assessment and Reassessment

Students will have time at the beginning of the hour (~20 minutes or so) to complete the assessment,
and will receive a score 0-8 for each learning target (1.1 and 1.2). Each learning target will be
assessed with a small number of “short questions” (multiple choice, single word answer,
label/identify), and one randomly selected longer-response question.

Reassessments will be completed via a video chat, where students will have the opportunity to
verbally communicate responses to questions posed by the teacher. Students may need to resubmit
learning targets or additional work before reassessing.
