ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
(GEC 109)
A. INTRODUCTION
Environmental science is the study of patterns and processes in the natural world and their modification by
human activity. This course will survey some of the many environmental science topics at an introductory level,
ultimately considering the sustainability of human activities on the planet.
1. Manifest meaningful and comprehensive pedagogical content knowledge PCK of different subject areas.
2. Utilize appropriate assessment and evaluation tools to measure learning outcomes.
3. Manifest skills in communication, higher order thinking and use of tools and technology to accelerate
learning and teaching.

MODULE 2: BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLES (CARBON, OXYGEN, NITROGEN, PHOSPHORUS & WATER)
Intended Learning Outcomes: At the end of this module, the student must have;
1. Gave word or group of words that relates on each letter in the ACROSTIC words.
2. Classified the following examples by filling in the table provided according to each label.
3. Identified/recognized the illustration given through picture analysis

6. Discussed the importance of the following cycles using the questions provided.
Introduction:
A thriving environment is basically composed of different structures that are interconnected and interact
with each other for their survival. This involves living things such as plants, animals and human beings, dependent
on the existence of one another and the nonliving things such as air, water, soil sunlight, nutrients and minerals
and the various cycles that allow living organisms to essentially grow, develop and thrive in the environment.
This lesson will help understand how each of these factors work together to create a sustainable ecological
succession. It will also allow us to see the significance of the numerous systems that make up the ecosystem. The
energies that help hold the ecosystem stable and the essential nutrients that can be contained within it.
ACTIVITY 1: ACROSTIC

ABSTRACTION:
Carbon Cycle
The carbon cycle is the process by which carbon moves from the atmosphere into the earth and its
organisms and then back again.
Nitrogen Cycle
Air is 78% nitrogen but this gaseous nitrogen cannot be used by plants. The sequence in which nitrogen
passes from the atmosphere to the soil and organisms, and then is eventually released back into the atmosphere.
Water Cycle
The whole process in which water evaporates and falls on the land as rain and water flows back into the
sea via rivers is known as water cycle.
Phosphorus Cycle
This is mainly sedimentary cycle since phosphorus is not found in the atmosphere. It is based on
phosphorus containing rocks that are mined or naturally weathered. It, however, involves the oceans to a certain
extent.
Oxygen Cycle
Respiration and photosynthesis are two life processes involved in the carbon-oxygen cycle. Oxygen is used
up by plants and animals in respiration in the performance of their life processes and release carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere. Plants get carbon dioxide from the air during photosynthesis and release oxygen as by product.
APPLICATION:
Draw a cycle representing the following.
1. Water cycle
2. Nitrogen cycle
3. Carbon cycle
EVALUATION:
Answer the following questions correctly:
1. What is the importance of biogeochemical cycles?
— Biogeochemical cycles importance are they regulate the elements necessary for life on Earth by
cycling them through the biological and physical aspects of the world. Biogeochemical cycles are a
form of natural recycling that allows the continuous survival of ecosystems.

ideas
— Human activities have greatly increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and nitrogen
levels in the biosphere. Altered biogeochemical cycles combined with climate change increase the
vulnerability of biodiversity, food security, human health, and water quality to a changing climate.
