1. What knowledge and information do you learn from this topic? Write your answer in Five (5)
Sentences.

— I have learned that gender and development is a development perspective that recognizes
the unequal status and situation of women and men in society. Women and men have
different development needs and interests, which is institutionalized and perpetuated by
cultural, social, economic and political norms, systems and structures. Understanding
these gender relations and the power dynamics behind them is a prerequisite for
understanding individuals’ access to and distribution of resources, the ability to make
decisions and the way women and men, boys and girls are affected by political processes
and social development. People of all genders have equal rights, responsibilities and
opportunities.

2. Differentiate between SEX & GENDER. (give at least Two (2) each).

— Gender refers to the characteristics of women, men, girls and boys that are socially
constructed. This includes norms, behaviors and roles associated with being a woman,
man, girl or boy, as well as relationships with behaviors.
— Sex refers to the physical differences between people who are male, female, or intersex.
A person typically has their sex assigned at birth based on physiological characteristics,
including their genitalia and chromosome composition.

— Gender-based violence (GBV) refers to violence directed towards an individual or group

gender, sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
— The sexual division of labor is the delegation of different tasks between males and
females. Among human foragers, males and females target different types of foods and
share them with each other for a mutual or familial benefit. The gender division of labor
refers to the allocation of different jobs or types of work to women and men. We aim to
discuss differences in the gendered division of labor across different cultural settings and
explore how these divisions are affected by societal, economic and historical changes.
— Economic marginalization means that people do not have the same chances as others to
contribute to and benefit from the economy. They don’t have the chance to get a good job,
or couldn’t attend a trade school to equip them with the skills to enter a certain sector.
