The Crucible: Act 1 – Imaginary scene

Characters: Abigail Williams, Reverend Parris, Reverend John Hale, Betty Parris and Tituba.
[All character’s stare at betty, after she wake up from her long rest]]

Betty [hysterically]: I saw all of them, I was led to it! I had no option but to… [ and she falls to
sleep once more
Reverend Parris [surprised and frenetically]: Betty? Can you hear me? Wake up! You just did,
come on, you can come back to us, I know you can! [shaking her by her shoulders]
Hale [Interrupting Parris]: Stop it! That will do no good for her! Let us examine her and her state
of well-being.
[As hale moves on to examine the girl, the other characters rested by the wall talking with each
other]
Abigail: Will she finally wake up for good next time?
Parris: Who knows, but something seems strange about it.
Abigail: What?
Parris What has changed for her to wake up so suddenly? What is different from the normal con-
ditions?
Abigail: I don’t know, maybe she just got well rested enough to come back to life.
Tibuta: Or it could mean an intervention of God, helping the poor child after we confessed our
sins!
[Abigail looked down, regretting not have spoken of his relationship with John Proctor]
Parris: Even though I am a man of God, I do not believe in such immediate. [he gets interrupted
by Hale]
Hale: No, no, mister Parris, she is right. The blessings of our father come to us the moment we
most need it, even if such moment is exactly after repenting towards him and praising his exis-
tence.
Hale: And the exams show exactly that: nothing has changed but her mental state. I surely must
be God helping us. [Says Hale as he turns to the people across the room].
Abigail: Can I say something more, Reverend Hale? But this time, in particular?
Hale: Sure Ma’am, come with be.
[He leads her into a small room next to the one they were previously in]
Hale: And so, Abigail, what did you want to tell me?

Abigail: Aye, Reverend Hale, as I just witnessed God’s providence before my eyes just after re-
penting to some of my sinful deeds, I wish to share and repent once more to this specific occur-
ring, which has nothing to do with the Devil incident we are already dealing with.
Hale: Go on, what do you have to say?
Abigail: Though the course of the past year I involved myself with an affair with John Proctor.
Hale: Very well my daughter, even though I can’t help you by myself I hope God does.
[Just as Hale finishes speaking, Parris bursts to the door enraged as he listened to Abigail’s affair
through the door.]
Parris: You witch! someone rescues my daughter from whatever took her.
[Dramatically, the curtains drop.
