Conditions Which Generate This Code:

Illustration 1 g00604636

Schematic of the Transmission Output Speed Sensor 1

This diagnostic code is recorded when the signal from the speed sensor is erratic, intermittent, or
incorrect.
Service Information System Page 2 of 7

For the transmission output speed sensors, the ECM determines that this condition exists by
comparing the sensor 1 and sensor 2 signals to each other. This diagnostic code is recorded when
one of the sensors shows a valid speed signal that is above the minimum and the other sensor
signal is below the level for dropout.

Note: Use the following procedure for the D6R, D7R, and the D8R only.

This diagnostic code will occur if the wiring for the transmission intermediate speed sensor and
the wiring for the output speed sensor is exchanged. The diagnostic code becomes inactive when
the transmission is in first gear or third gear. Use the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool in order to
determine if the wires for the speed sensor are exchanged. Go to mode 7 for component data
display. Use the "+/-" switch in order to change the component number to 671. Operate the
machine in first gear. There should be a numerical value in the display which increases with
vehicle speed. Shift to second gear. If the wires are exchanged, the value that is displayed will go
to zero. For an additional check, compare the values for components 0671, 673, 674 and 675 when
the transmission is in first gear and in second gear. When the transmission is in first gear all four
codes should have the same value. When the transmission is in second gear, 0671 and 673 should
have the same value. When the transmission is in second gear, the values for 674 and 675 should
be zero. If the wires for the speed sensor are exchanged, the values for 671 and 675 will be zero. If
the wires for the speed sensor are exchanged, 673 and 674 will have the same value.

To correct this problem, remove the transmission access cover at the rear of the machine. There
will be two connectors for speed sensors near the lower left side of the transmission case. The
connectors are under the cross shaft of the bevel gear. The one to the left will have gray wires and
orange wires. The one on the right will have blue wires and brown wires. There are two additional
connectors for the speed sensor. The two additional connectors are located behind the control
stack. These connectors are the connectors that are exchanged. The connector that is located to the
left should have green wires and white wires. The connectors that are located to the right should
have yellow wires and purple wires. Position these connectors in the proper locations. There is a
tab that locks on top of the connector. The tab must be depressed in order to remove the connector
from the solenoid.

Use the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool to verify that the problem has been corrected. In second
gear, components 671 and 673 should read the same value. Component 674 and component 675
should read zero.

Note: It may be necessary to move the machine in order to detect a problem for the transmission
intermediate speed sensor and the output speed sensor. The following procedures can be used for
troubleshooting the transmission speed sensor.

System Response:

This diagnostic code causes the ECM to be unable to calculate speed ratios. Diagnostic codes will
show slippage on the forward clutch and the reverse clutch of the transmission.

Test Step 1. CHECK THE SENSOR AND CHECK THE HARNESS AT THE
TRANSMISSION

Before performing the following procedures, verify that the battery power in the ohmmeter is
good and verify that the ohmmeter is set to the proper range of resistance.

A. Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.

Service Information System Page 3 of 7

B. Disconnect the machine harness from the internal harness of the transmission at the
transmission case.

C. At the transmission case, measure the resistance between the two contacts of the sensor.

Table 1
Coil Resistance for TOS Sensor
Speed Sensor Part # Sensor Coil Resistance
3E-8848
183-5011 1100 ± 100 ohms @25° C (77° F)
193-2550
1450 ± 180 ohms @
318-1178
25° C (77° F)

Expected Result:

The resistance is within the range listed in Table 1.

Results:

• OK - The TOS sensor circuit resistance is within the listed range. The resistance is correct.
The speed sensor and the internal harness of the transmission have not failed. Proceed to
Test Step 3.

• NOT OK - The TOS sensor circuit resistance is NOT within the listed range. The speed
sensor or the internal harness of the transmission has failed. Proceed to Test Step 2.

Test Step 2. CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF THE SENSOR

A. Disconnect the speed sensor from the internal harness of the transmission.

B. Measure the resistance between the two contacts of the connector for the speed sensor.

Expected Result:

The resistance is within the range listed in Table 1.

Results:

• OK - The TOS sensor resistance is within the listed range.

Repair: The internal harness of the transmission has failed. Repair the internal harness for
the transmission or replace the internal harness for the transmission.

STOP

• NOT OK - The TOS sensor resistance is NOT within the listed range.

Repair: The speed sensor has failed. Replace the sensor. Adjust the speed sensor properly

Test Step 3. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN IN THE MACHINE
HARNESS

A. The key start switch is OFF and the machine harness is disconnected from the internal
harness of the transmission at the transmission case.

B. At the machine harness connector for the transmission, place a jumper between the two
contacts that correspond to the sensor.

C. Disconnect the machine harness connector J2 from the ECM.

D. At the J2 harness connector, measure the resistance between the positive signal contact and
the negative signal contact for the suspect sensor.

Expected Result:

There should be less than 5.0 ohms resistance.

Results:

• OK - There is less than 5.0 ohms resistance. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to
Test Step 4.

• NOT OK - There is not less than 5.0 ohms resistance.

Repair: There is an open circuit in the machine harness. The open is in positive signal wire
or the negative signal wire of the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace
the machine harness.

STOP

Test Step 4. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT

A. If a jumper was used in a previous step, remove the jumper.

B. Reconnect the machine harness to the internal harness of the transmission at the
transmission case.

C. At the J1 and J2 harness connectors, measure the resistance between the + signal contact
and all sources of positive voltage and ground. The possible sources of positive voltage are
contacts J1-1, J1-4, J1-6, J1-8, J1-10, J1-11, J1-12, J1-17, J1-18, J1-40, J2-1, J2-2, J2-7, J2-
8, J2-13, J2-19, and J2-37. The possible sources of ground are contact J1-2, contact J1-5,
contact J1-7, contact J1-15, contact J1-16, contact J2-3 and frame ground.

D. Repeat the previous step with the negative signal contact.

Expected Result:

Each resistance should be greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:
Service Information System Page 5 of 7

• OK - Each resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to
Test Step 5.

• NOT OK - Each resistance is not greater than 5000 ohms.

Repair: There is a short in the machine harness. There is a short between the signal circuit
and the circuit with a low resistance measurement. Repair the machine harness or replace
the machine harness.

STOP

Test Step 5. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE IS STILL ACTIVE

A. Clean the contacts of the harness connectors.

B. Reconnect all harness connectors.

C. Turn the key start switch to the ON position.

D. Start the engine and run the engine at low idle.

E. Operate the machine. For transmission output speed sensors and the intermediate speed
sensors, this step will require the machine to be moving.

F. Enter service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. Put the diagnostic code on hold.

G. Observe the status of the diagnostic code indicator.
