Schematic of the Torque Converter Output Speed Sensor
This diagnostic code is for the Torque Converter Output Speed Sensor.
This diagnostic code is recorded when the signal of the torque converter output speed sensor is
erratic, intermittent, or incorrect. This diagnostic code occurs when the following conditions exist:
(SEBP3514 - ) - Service Information System Page 2 of 6
System Response:
The ECM is unable to calculate the speed ratios. The quality of the shift will be affected.
Note: The machine must be moving in order for the diagnostic code to be present.
Before performing the following procedures, verify that the battery power in the ohmmeter is
good and verify that the ohmmeter is set to the proper range of resistance.
C. Measure the resistance between the two contacts of the connector for the speed sensor.
Expected Result:
The range of measured resistance should be 800 to 1600 ohms for the temperature range of −40 °C
(−40 °F) to 150 °C (302 °F). The resistance at ambient temperature should read 1000 to 1200
ohms.
Results:
• OK - The resistance measures 1000 to 1200 ohms at ambient temperature or the resistance
measures 800 to 1600 ohms for the temperature range of −40 °C (−40 °F) to 150 °C
(302 °F). The speed sensor has not failed. Proceed to Test Step 2.
• NOT OK - The resistance does not measure 1000 to 1200 ohms at ambient temperature or
the resistance does not measure 800 to 1600 ohms for the temperature range of −40 °C
(−40 °F) to 150 °C (302 °F).
Repair: The speed sensor is failed. Replace the sensor. Adjust the speed sensor properly
after installation. See Testing and Adjusting, "Speed Sensor - Adjust".
STOP
Test Step 2. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN IN THE MACHINE
HARNESS.
A. At the machine harness connector for the speed sensor, place a jumper between the two
contacts.
C. At the J2 harness connector, measure the resistance between J2-23 and J2-29.
(SEBP3514 - ) - Service Information System Page 3 of 6
Expected Result:
Results:
• OK - There is less than 5.0 ohms resistance. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to
Test Step 3.
Repair: There is an open circuit in the machine harness. The open is in wire E908-BR
(Brown) or wire E909-WH(White) of the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or
replace the machine harness.
STOP
B. At the J1 and J2 harness connectors, measure the resistance between J2-23 (wire E909-WH
(White)) and all sources of positive voltage and ground. The possible sources of positive
voltage are contacts J1-1, J1-4, J1-6, J1-8, J1-10, J1-11, J1-12, J1-17, J1-18, J1-40, J2-1, J2-
2, J2-7, J2-8, J2-13, J2-19, and J2-37. The possible sources of ground are contact J1-2,
contact J1-5, contact J1-7, contact J1-15, contact J1-16, contact J2-3 and frame ground.
C. At the J1 and J2 harness connectors, measure the resistance between J2-29 (wire E908-BR
(Brown)) and all sources of positive voltage and ground. The possible sources of positive
voltage are contacts J1-1, J1-4, J1-6, J1-8, J1-10, J1-11, J1-12, J1-17, J1-18, J1-40, J2-1, J2-
2, J2-7, J2-8, J2-13, J2-19, and J2-37. The possible sources of ground are contact J1-2,
contact J1-5, contact J1-7, contact J1-15, contact J1-16, contact J2-3 and frame ground.
Expected Result:
Results:
• OK - Each resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to
Test Step 4.
Repair: There is a short in the machine harness. The short is between the signal circuit
(wire E909-WH(White) or wire E908-BR(Brown)) and the circuit with a low resistance
measurement. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
D. Start the engine and run the engine above 500 RPM.
Note: The diagnostic code is logged only when the transmission is in the neutral position.
G. Enter service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. Put CID 0672 FMI 02 on hold.
Expected Result:
Results:
• YES - The diagnostic code indicator shows "SERV CODE". Proceed to Test Step 5.
Repair: The problem does not exist at this time. The initial problem was probably caused
by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was
disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.
STOP
A. Check the adjustment of the speed sensor. See Testing and Adjusting, "Speed Sensor -
Adjust".
E. Start the engine and run the engine above 500 RPM.
Note: The diagnostic code is logged only when the transmission is in NEUTRAL.
H. Enter service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. Put CID 0672 FMI 02 on hold.
Expected Result:
Results:
(SEBP3514 - ) - Service Information System Page 5 of 6
Repair: Replace the speed sensor. Adjust the speed sensor. See Testing and Adjusting,
"Speed Sensor - Adjust".
Repair: Adjustment of the speed sensor corrected the problem. Resume normal machine
operation.
STOP
A. Remove connectors J1 and J2 from the ECM. Inspect the contacts and clean the contacts of
the harness connectors.
D. Enter service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System and clear all inactive diagnostic
codes.
Expected Result:
Results:
Repair: Exit this procedure and perform the diagnostic code procedure again. If the
problem persists, the ECM may have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your
dealership's Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This
consultation may greatly reduce repair time. See the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic
Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
STOP
• NO - The CID 0672 FMI 02 diagnostic code is not present. "SERV CODE" is not showing.
Repair: The problem does not exist at this time. The new speed sensor corrected the
problem. Resume normal machine operation.
STOP
