Read the learner’s module. Reflect on the content by answering the following questions.

1. What is Academic Text?

An academic text is formal by avoiding casual or conversational language such as


contractions or informal vocabulary. It uses appropriate language and tenses, and is
clear, concise and balanced.

2. What are the Content and Style of Academic Texts?

● Include concepts and theories related to the specific discipline


● Have clearly structured introduction, body, and conclusion
● Include information from credible sources that are properly cited
● Include concepts and theories that are related to the specific discipline they explore
● Usually exhibit all properties of a well-written text --- organization, unity, coherence,
and strict adherence to the rules of language and mechanics

3. What is Linguistic Register?

Linguistic Register is a variety of language used for a particular purpose or in a


particular communicative situation.

4. What are the Stylistic Variations: Degrees of Formality in Language Usage?

● Registers are marked by a variety of specialized vocabulary and turns of phrases,


colloquialisms, and the use of jargon
● A register can be considered a unique way a speaker uses language in different
circumstances
● Registers encompass all the ways in which humans communicate to one another in
specific parameters
5. Enumerate some of the examples of Language Registers.

● Language of medicine/medical science (medical terminologies)


● Law (legal language)
● Journalism (journalistic language)
● Literature (literary language)

PERFORMANCE ACTIVITY:

1. The reading texts in your module illustrates the use of the English language in different

disciplines. Read carefully, evaluate and select the most related text from your chosen

track or discipline and then answer the comprehensions that follow.

1. Did you encounter difficulties in understanding the text? Why?

Yes, because there are words that I am not familiar with so it was difficult for
me to understand.

2. List down words that you found difficult to understand and look for its definition in the

dictionary.

Cyanosis- a blue discoloration of the skin due to the circulation of blood low in
oxygen
Ecchymosis- a skin discoloration caused by bleeding underneath the skin
Discernible- detectable or derivable by use of the senses or the intellect
Galea- an anatomical part suggesting a helmet; a helmet-shaped structure
Ligature- something that is used to bind

3. How was the report structured?

The report was structured by stating the cause of death first, then describing
how the injuries occured on a certain area and some evidences.
4. What did you learn from each sentence in the report? Begin with a simple grid like

the one below:

The autopsy surgeon’s report firstly states the cause of death due to
asphyxia, cerebral anemia and shock. Followed by manner using the victim’s hair for
further investigation. Then, the report states the surgeon’s findings where all the
injuries and concludes how the victim died using the surgeon’s findings and
evidences.

I have learned that academic text is defined as critical, objective,


specialized texts written by experts or professionals in a given field using formal language. This
means that they are based on facts with a solid basis. Academic text makes it easier for the
reader to navigate the text and understand the material better. It also makes it easier for you to
organise your material.
