ANSI/BHMA A156.4-2000
American National Standard for Door Controls-Closers
Standard ANSI/BHMA A156.4-2000 contains requirements for surface mounted,
concealed in the door, overhead concealed and concealed in the floor door closers, as
well as pivots for floor closers. The standard includes general information, testing
procedures, and equipment and performance requirements. Typical illustrations,
identifying type numbers and required tests are given for Surface Closers, Concealed
Closers, Pivot Sets, Gate Closers/Dwarf Door Closers and Light Screen/Combination
Storm Door Closers.

Tests and required results in this standard include:

• Adjustable Closing Speed
• Closing Force
• Cycle
• Efficiency
• Pivot Performance
• Finish

Product grades are defined by progressive performance benchmarks in the given tests,
with Grade 1 being the highest level of performance. For example, in the “cycle test,” a
Grade 1 pivot set must be able to perform 2,000,000 cycles, as compared to a Grade 2,
which is required to perform 1,000,000 cycles. The last digit of the product number
identifies the grade of a BHMA product.
