Communication mode refers to the channel
through which one express his/her communicative
intent. It is the medium through which one
conveys his/her thoughts. Views or feelings can be
communicated through face to face interaction,
video, or audio. The mode may also be text-based.
Communication comes in diverse forms. In the distant past,
people communicated through heralds. Then came the snail
mails, type writers, telegrams, beepers. Not too long ago, people
used telephones. In the technological era, people utilize diverse
platforms in order to convey or send messages and communicate
even across the globe through E-mail, Twitter, Facebook, and
other methods of wireless communication and transaction.
Because of faster Internet connection, people can simply search
the Web for information just at the tip of their fingers.

At the end of this lesson, you can:
1.Identify the various communication modes;

2.Demonstrate the importance of face-to-face, audio, virtual,

text-based, and other forms of communication targeting

different types of audiences in local and global settings.
3.Distinguish the differences between and among the

communication modes.

Communication Modes

Face-to-face interaction. It is an informal or

casual conversation between two or more
people. People engage in social conversations to
establish relationships or maintain them.
Video. Another mode of communication is video. Web
cameras are used so that two or more people who
cannot interact face-to-face can communicate. If there
are no technical glitches encountered, these can be
very effective mode of communication.
Audio. In this mode of communication, only the voice
of the speaker is heard like in podcast for instance. The
audio communication mode is quite difficult especially
if you are listening to people with different accents.
Text-Based. These include e-mails, facsimile,
text messaging, and instant messaging.
Communication and Technology
Impact of Globalization on Communication

There are various platforms through which we communicate our
ideas with each other. In the twilight years, communication was
done manually causing the delay of transmission. Then later it
evolved into using handwritten messages, typewritten messages,
short telegrams. Recently then came the advent of computer
encoded texts, landline telephone conversations as well as
audio-video recorded messages. Because each mode of
communication is distinct from each other, the ways from which
we craft our messages differ.

Advantages of Globalization

Globalization has become a term common to many languages and

used in many disciplines. Some use it positively and others use it
negatively. It is defined diversely, depending on the user’s
perspective and intent. Globalization refers to the
interdependence among national governments, business firms,
nonprofit organizations, and individual citizens (Gannon, cited in
Samovar, et al 2010).
Globalization comprises actions or processes that
involve the entire world and result in something
worldwide in scope. Whatever definition authors may
have on this term, the common theme resonating from
these definitions is connectedness. It has become
increasingly difficult to live your life without being
affected by other people’s opinions and actions.
This connectedness, which constitutes the core of
globalization is the product of growth in world trade
and the business activity that accompanies it; dramatic
improvements in telecommunications; ease of data
storage and transmission; increased facility and
opportunity for business and leisure travel.
Technology and Travel
Technology expands the ability of people throughout the world to
connect with each other. At the end of 2007, there were an estimated 3.3
billion cell phone subscribers in the world, and in many countries, cell
phones are now perceived as necessities rather than conveniences. Cell
phones are already used for voice and e-mail communication and
Internet access, and function as cameras, voice recorders, personal
organizers, game devices, and music players. Will you know the proper
phone etiquette when traveling in another culture? Advancing
technology also promises to increase exponentially, the amount of
information available in the very near future. Management and
regulation of this deluge of information will require international
cooperation and the establishment of mutually agreeable protocols.

Disadvantages of Globalization on Communication

Due to the advancement of technology worldwide, there are

downsides that users or subscribers of these devices need to be
aware of. These downsides include intrusion to privacy, breach of
confidentiality, larceny, espionage and among others. Issues
pertaining data privacy, computer viruses, hackers, child
pornography, and many other abuses on line are now rampant on
the Internet. Mature use of the technology is important. Use the
gadgets to your advantage. Mature users of these gadgets are
always reminded: “Don’t let the gadgets use you; use the gadgets
instead.”

Impact of Globalization on Communication

As more people cross borders because of globalization,

more language contact happens, making communication
more challenging. Your teachers will ask you to view a
video or listen to an audio-recording titled The Effects of
globalization on Global Communication by Nikolay Danev.
Communication in Social Media
According to study, Filipinos spend more time on social media sites than
anyone else in the world (Camus, 2017, cited in Madrunio and Martin,
2018).

Filipinos spend most of their online time on sites such as Facebook,

Snapchat and Twitter according to We Are Social Ltd. The Philippines’
internet and social media users grew by over 25 percent, up 13 million
and 12 million over last year respectively. Mobile was also a fast-growing
platform, accounting for 38 percent of all Web traffic in the country.

Internet Use on the Rise

The Philippines, so far, has a social media

penetration rate of 58 percent, higher than the average
of 47 percent in Southeast Asia. Around the world
internet users grew 10 percent, or an additional 354
million people, while active social media users jumped
21 percent, or an additional 482 million.

Digital Connectivity

Half of the world’s population is now online,

which is a testament to the speed with which digital
connectivity is helping to improve people’s lives,
according to We Are Social consultant, Simon
Kemp. The report compiles the data from the
world’s largest studies of online behavior,
conducted by organizations including
GlobalWebIndex, GSMA Intelligence, Statista, and
Akamai in “a comprehensive state” of social media
reference.
Often times, as users of Social Media, you will be confronted
with information that are “non-prose materials.” Non-prose
materials online appear in visuals like graphs, charts, tables,
figures, symbols and others that need to be understood. In the
academe, there is a need for you to read and understand visuals
since these are common in academic writing and researches.
Describing trends, cash flows, and many types of data that are
non-literary demands your mature understanding and
interpretation.
Knowing how to read and interpret visuals, so as knowing how
write data commentaries will give you an edge over other
learners who had less exposure to these types of writing.
