Judging the Horoscope
Judging the interweaving of the various basic astrological
principles is what gives life to the horoscope, allowing the astrologer
to make predictions. There are certain basic predictive principles that
apply to all areas of life; using them will provide reasonable accuracy
in determining events in the life of the native. Additionally, for each
area of life there are specific principles and yogas that apply only to
that area of life, learning these as well will provide the highest
accuracy in prediction. In this chapter we will discuss the basic
predictive principles that will quickly provide a foundation for
judging the horoscope.

When judging any area of life four things must be considered:

1. The House.
2. The House Lord.
3. The Karaka: the planet who produces the item under
consideration.
4. The Appropriate House from the Karaka. For instance, if
children are being considered, the Karaka is Jupiter; therefore the
5th house from Jupiter must also be considered, since the 5th
house is the house of children.

The Karaka is the planet that is the causer/producer of the item

under consideration, the house gives birth to the item, and the house
lord is the item under consideration in its activities:

1. If the Karaka and the appropriate house from the Karaka are
heavily afflicted, it is not likely that the item under consideration
will be a part of life, in this case the karaka will not be able to
produce what it is the karaka for. On the other hand, if the
258 Vault of the Heavens
Karaka and the appropriate house are well disposed, the item
under consideration will be produced in the native s life.
2. If the house is afflicted, there will be difficulties in bringing the
item into concrete manifestation and inherent weaknesses in the
item under consideration. These inherent weaknesses will come
to the surface in the appropriate dasas. If the house is well
disposed it will be easy to bring the item under consideration into
concrete realization and the item will be inherently strong.
3. If the lord is afflicted, the item will be involved in activities, and
have pressures put upon it that are not conducive to its well-
being or longevity. If the lord is well disposed the item under
consideration will be involved in activities that are productive to
its well-being, growth and longevity.

KARAKAS
In judging any area of life it is the karaka that is the most important. If the
karaka and the appropriate house from it have only malefic
influences upon them it is not likely that the native will enjoy the area
of life under consideration. Following are the most important karakas
for the several houses:
