CONCEPT NOTES: The stages of the Communication Process

STEP 1: CONCEPTUALIZING: This step concerns the formation of ideas and messages to be
sent. Everything that we intend to convey to others originates in our brain.

STEP 2: ENCODING: This is the transformation of abstract ideas and messages into comprehensible forms
such as language structures (letters, words, marks), bodily actions, or voice quality. This step concerns encoding
or putting your ideas into codes and symbols.

STEP 3: TRANSMITTING: This is the actual sending of the message through verbal or non-verbal channels.

STEP 4: RECEIVING: The message that was sent through verbal or non-verbal symbols (channel) and received
by the receiver.

STEP 5: DECODING: This is the stage where we decode or translate the symbols to ordinary language that
mirrors cultural, sociological, ideological, institutional or environmental understanding of your world.

STEP 6: RESPONDING: This is the reaction, response or feedback to the sender or speaks.

STEP 7: VERIFYING: This step concerns the checking of the effects of our communication with the receivers.
Monitoring the listeners’ reactions or feedback to the message is one way of ensuring an effective communication
with others.
