This handout will help you to know the process of gathering information

TOPIC 1: Steps to Select a Topic for a Research Paper

STEP 1: Relax and select a topic you are interested in and brainstorm. Jot down the entire topic for a research
paper as they come into your mind. The following are the basic questions that can be asked when writing a
research topic.

 Does the title describe what the study is all about?

 Does the title contain a high specificity level?
 Is the title academically phrased and is not lengthy?
 Is the title within the twelve (12) substantive word requirements of the American Psychological
Association (APA)?

Note: The substantive word requirement of APA means that only the keywords are counted.
For Example, in the quantitative research title “Reading Comprehension and the Ability of Freshmen
Students in Solving Word Problems” There are only 8 substantive words in the title. This means that
the keyword in the title are (1) Reading, (2) Comprehension, (3) Ability, (4) Freshmen, (5) Students, (6)
Solving, (7) Word, (8) Problems. The prepositions in, and, of, and the connector are not included.

STEP 2: After you have enough ideas that you find interesting, select two or three promising topics and start
researching on the internet, in the books, or libraries. At this stage it is not important to do serious research;
you only need general information about the topic. After you have settled the topic you can go for a thorough
research.

STEP 3: At this point, you have some ideas of the topic you have selected; you need to further reduce down to
one or two topics. Spend some time; reflect on the nature of the topic? do you feel comfortable with the idea?,
do you feel interested and can you find enough material?, after a thorough research , to write a complete
project on it. Some topics are interesting, but it is difficult to find information on them, even after a complete
research. Take a little time to analyze the various aspects, availability of information, and the prospect of
expanding the research topic to include fresh information.

STEP 4: You have selected a topic; you have done research and have information related to it, now it is time
to start focusing. Fine tune the ideas, reject weak topic related ideas, and select ones that are strong one. Be
thorough in this exercise, edit, ponder, if possible discuss with your peers or teachers. Use keyword to make
an outline of your research paper.

You have pondered, researched, and picked up interesting topics, selected background details and information
and now you are ready to work on your research paper. During all this exercise, there is no need to be rigid,
follow steps given above. You can make your own schedule and follow it. Good luck!

As work Immersion students, what are the sources of your research problems?
1. Any work immersion agency be it government or private institution.
2. As SHS Immersion student – your own experience or genuine interest.
3. Previous research studies suffering from SHS Immersion researches which you want to validate.
4. Relating it to your career interest.
5. Real life problems, issues, experiences or situations of SHS students.
