Activity Title: Reflection Essay (Art and Humanities)

I just finished watching the video on YouTube entitled “Why Art Matters”, uploaded by
Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA). This video was a Kilroy Academy Tutorial
by Dr. Eddie A. Widder, he is the CEO and Senior Scientist at ORCA.

Back then when I was younger, every time I hear the word “art”, my mind always thinks
old paintings in the museum and I just don’t get it why people are into art. But as I grow
through the years, I learned that art is for anyone. It is for the people who want to experience
and it's often in more places than I realized back then, such as the favorite songs I listen to, the
different movies and series I watch, and the poems I made for school requirements are
considered art. In addition, it also tells us that art evolved in a number of different ways
through the ages.

I observed that artists have a responsibility to help people not only to understand reality
but also the world of imagination. Just like in the video, it says “Art provides the means of
seeing the world differently and such it serves to not only reflect changing human perspectives
but to inspire them.” I learned that art depicts reality in such a way that it can alter the
audience's perception of the world.

In the video, it also says that “Art has the power to alter perspectives in ways that mere
facts can’t”. A great example is our Philippine economic growth through the years under
various presidents. When you show the statistics to people, some might find it difficult to
comprehend the facts because they are just looking at numbers. But when you present them
art that shows the economic situation of the Philippines such as in the time of the Marcos
regime, which depicts poverty, unemployment, inflation, and other more. That said art would
be more meaningful and have more impact on the people than the numbers on the statistics of
economic growth.

Lastly, I learned that art gives us the opportunity to tell stories, write down history,
touch our emotions and change the way we see the world. Also, art inspires us, to use our
imagination and thoughts depending on the meaning of the art that we want to give.

Art gives us the opportunity to tell stories, record history, and tap into our emotions in a way
that few other things can’t
Art presents reality in a way that may change the vision and perspective of audience towards
the world.

Especially, it encourages the people to turn their thoughts and imagination according to the
meaning they bring to a piece of art.

Art has the power to alter perspectives in ways that mere facts can’t.
Most people find it difficult to grasp the significance facts and statistics that’s why some create
art to such as taking pictures, drawing,
