After the Second World War, the Nacionalista paty

emerged as a major party headed by Manuel

Quezon and anchored by Manuel Roxas and Sergio

Osmena. Osmena declared his intention to run for

president during this period. Roxas formed the NP-

Liberal wing of the party and challenged Osmena.

The Roxas faction consists of Quezon supporters

from the colonial era. After the split, Osmena kept

the name Nacionalista for his run, but he was no

longer the NP's candidate. In the 1946 elections,

Roxas and his party overwhelmingly defeated

Osmena's. The Liberal Party formed when the NP's

Liberal Wing changed its name to the Liberal Party.

It's worth noting that the Liberal Party has links

to the Nacionalista Party. In the April 1946

election, both parties promised that they could

get more US assistance than the other. It was

a lopsided fight. Osmena was ill and decided

to leave, but she was persuaded to stay;

Roxas was younger and more dynamic.

The new Liberal Party took power after Roxas

and Quirino won the election on April 23, 1946.

Following his inauguration as President of the

Republic on May 25, 1946, Manuel Roxas issued

a general amnesty in favor of all alleged

Japanese collaborators, with Congress's

approval.
We, the Liberal Party, envision a just, prosperous, peaceful and

caring civil society anchored on social equity, a vigorous

market economy, political openness, ecological balance and an

honest, effective government.

We are a responsive, accountable and broad-based political

party, unleashing the potential of an empowered citizenry

through the Party’s Liberal Democratic Ideals, cohesive

membership and courageous, principled leadership.

To attain that vision, we shall advance the Liberal Ideals of

Society, Justice, Human Rights, a free Market Economy,

Participatory Democracy, and Solidarity with all Nations.

During the 1947 Liberal Party Convention, the founder of the

Liberal Party, Roxas, defined what is it to be a liberal: We

The Liberal Party maintains its reputation as the only major

political party standing up to an increasingly oppressive and

populist regime. Its leaders and members have repeatedly

followed the Party's thrusts by upholding human rights, as

shown by its opposition to the reinstatement of the death

penalty and the reduction of the minimum age of criminal

liability, as well as its demand for an end to the use of murder

as a vital tool in the government's anti-drug campaign.

Furthermore, by defending democracy and the rule of law,

advocating for the legitimacy of the electoral process, and

standing firm against attempts to weaken democratic

institutions to consolidate power. Defending democracy and

the rule of law, advocating for the electoral process's integrity,

and standing firm against attempts to undermine democratic

institutions to consolidate power.

The Liberal Party is forging ahead, fueled by the enthusiasm of

a large volunteer base at the core of its unorthodox election

campaign in the 2019 midterm elections. It builds on the

promise of being a genuine people's party by extending

membership to the general public, liberal democratic public,

and critical sectors of society; organizing and mobilizing

citizens at the grassroots; and announcing policy directions

that foster inclusion, integrity, and empowerment.
