Are the functions of Rasa Dhatu

1. Shareera Preenana (gratification)

- The word preenana means to satisfy the organs in a constantly


Functioning body, to relieve their fatigue, and to increase their
efficiency.
- It means to provide enough fluids to all the cells in the body
- As the dried `plant becomes fresh after receiving water similarly all
dhatus become physiologically active due to preenna of Rasa Dhatu.
- Therefore in clinical practise oral rehydration therapy or transfusion
of intravenous fluids is the line of treatment for the patient of
dehydration
- Dehydration is Rasa Dhatu Kshaya or depletation of it
- Examples of Shareera Preenana
- Cold water or lemon juice is used to relieve fatigue caused by
physical exertion
- The fatigue that comes after the time of hunger has passed is
eliminated after the meal
- Examples of Mana & Indriya Preenana
- Drinking milk to relieve fatigue after intellectual work as like study
Rinse eyes with cold water if sunburn causes eye irritation

2. Raktadhatu Nirman and Poshana


- Formation and functioning of Rasa Dhatu affets Rakta Dhatu.
- Proper metabolism of Rasa Dhatu will lead to Rakta Dhatu pushti or
Proper formation of Rakta

- Anna rasa acquire redness from the fire like pitta and is changed into
Rakta dhatu
- Rakta as other body tissues is damaged in due time as it provides
energy for varoius physical and mental activities
- The Annarasa provides nutrition and helps in formation of blood
- The Rasa though liquid and possessing properties and actions of
water, after reaching liver and spleen attains red colour.

- Various terms are used to describe the process of nutrition viz
a) Tarpana
- i.e. nourishment of entire body constantly which starts from foetal
state and remains whole of the life
b) Vardhna
- It causes growth and development especially in childhood and adult
age
c) Dharana
- It maintains the body in later age when growth and development is
not required
d) Yapana
- Yapana means maintainence of body requirements in old age and
even when the food is not being taken as in fasts, starvation etc.

3. Tushti
- It means satisfaction and pleasure
- It is provided by Rasa dhatu, which is the ultimate aim of the physical
and mental fitness

4. Rajas or Aartava formation


- It is menstrual blood which is present in females
- From the Rasa dhatu itself is produced the blood called Rajas
(menstrual blood in women )
- Which commences to flow from the vagina after age of twelve year
and dimineshes by the age of fifty
- It is known as upadhatu of Rasa

5. Stanya formation
- It means formation of breast milk
- It is an upadhatu of Rasa dhatu which is generated after the delivery
of child
- It provide complete nourishment to the child
- The essence of Rasa dhatu, produced by digested food which is
sweet, coming into breasts from the entire body is known as stanya
- The love of mother towerds the child is the cause for its flow

6. Kitta (Kapha) Formation


- The waste products produced in the body after metabolism, which
are to be excreted timely from the body are known as malas.
- The food is metabolised in the form of rasa dhatu first
- The phlegm (Kapha) has been described as upadhatu of Rasa dhatu
- It must be kept in mind that the waste produce of Rasa i.e.phlegm
(Kapha) is different from the humour Kapha
- These are main functions of Rasa Dhatu which are performed after it
is again metabolised by Rasa dhatvagni paka (tissue formation)
