MOODLE ACTIVITY WEEK 2

SPEAKING 3
Instructions:
 Watch the video posted on Moodle Activity 2 to have a rough understanding
of how to discuss a controversial topic in English.
 Brainstorm ideas in groups and this includes the addition of reasons/
examples/ results for clarity.
 Make a video clip featuring the group members discussing one of the
following topics:
+ Situation 1: Many pedestrians have complained that beggars are becoming
more aggressive and threatening as they demand money from passers-by.
These beggars often stand at bus stops and block subway entrances, which
makes it difficult for people to use public transportation. Store owners have
also complained that beggars often stand on
the sidewalk near their entrances. Shoppers don't want to pass beggars to
enter these stores, so business owners are losing money. City officials have
told police to begin arresting beggars.
Group Decision. Do beggars have a right to beg in any public location?
________ Yes ________ No
Reasons:
_____________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________
+ Situation 2: A five-year-old child has been in a terrible car accident. To
give her a chance to live, the girl's physician must give her an immediate
blood transfusion. However, both of the child's parents belong to a religion
that forbids members from receiving blood transfusions, even in a life-or-
death situation. With their strong religious beliefs, the
parents refuse to give permission for a transfusion.
Group Decision. What action, if any, should the child's physician take?
Reasons:
_____________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________
 Follow the structure of a group discussion activity:
+ Part 1: Greeting each other and leading in the situation (e.g. assignment/
homework/ project, an imaginary story with ‘you’ – the leader – the person
who witnessed the situation and had difficulties finding solutions to deal
with it, etc.)
+ Part 2: Discussing the topic (exchanging information, responding to
questions, showing agreement or disagreement, defending your ideas, etc.)
The leader needs to express his or her opinion, too.
+ Part 3: After reaching the final decision on the topic, all the groups need to
nominate a member to restate their final decision/ solution and summarize
the main reasons. Ending the conversation (signalling the end, ending the
conversation, and taking leave)
Requirements:
 Make sure the sound of the video is of good quality.
 Ensure body language and group interaction.
 If no other options, use Microsoft Teams to make a video recording of the
group discussing the topic and interacting with each other.
 Time limit of each video clip: Maximum 5-7 mins.
 Deadline: 03/10/2022
