CRISTOL WD B
Wax Dispersant for Crude Oils

INTRODUCTION
Waxes are natural constituents of crude oils and most gas condensates. These are mostly, long
chain n-alkanes and small amounts of branched paraffins, and aromatic compounds. Wax
deposition during crude oil production and transportation is one of the most serious problems
faced in downhole and surface operations, creating two major concerns – technical and
economic.

Technical issues associated with wax deposition include:

 Permeability reduction and formation damage when it occurs around the wellbore and
its vicinity.
 Reduction in the interior diameter and eventual plugging of production strings and flow
lines.
 Additional strain on pumping equipment owing to increased pressure drop along flow
lines.
 Limiting influence on the operating capacity of the entire production system.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
CRISTOL WD B is a high performance wax dispersant for applications in Crude oil production and
transportation. It interacts with the wax to modify or interfere with its crystallization process
and prevents further wax growth by covering sites where, new wax molecules would attach.
CRISTOL WD B has been proven to act as an excellent Wax Dispersant and also helps to lower
pour point in waxy crude oils. CRSITOL WD B should be added to the system before bulk oil
temperature drops below the Wax Appearance Temperature (WAT).

CASE STUDY
Crude oil production and their transportation from Indian oilfield (Northern onshore and
western offshore) faced severe challenge of production loss due to high pressure development
during transportation of crude oils through pipelines. Both the field were noted to have high

wax content, high pour point along with high viscosity profile below their pour point
temperatures.
Detailed investigation of the various parameters indicate that the main causes of production
loss and high viscosity generation were due to wax separation and deposition inside the pipeline
and temperature drop of crude oils below their pour point temperatures during their
transportation through pipelines.
CRISTOL WD B has been proven to act both as a Wax Dispersant, Viscosity improver and Pour
point depressant in waxy crude oils.
(A) ONSHORE OILFIELD IN NORTHERN INDIA
CRISTOL WD B was applied in one of the high wax content (23-26 %) and pour point (33-36 oC)
crude oil of 37.8 API gravity from one of the onshore oil field in North India. CRISTOL WD B was
tested in dehydrated (w/c <1%) crude oils with the dosage of 1000 ppm and resulted the wax
inhibition efficiency of 44.4 % (Cold Finger test) as shown in Fig. (1).
It was also observed that CRISTOL WD B at 1000ppm dosage had performed remarkably well
with a maximum of 87.9% reduction in Viscosity with Dehydrated crude at 30 oC temperature as
shown in Fig.(2).

Crude Oil (Cold Finger Test)
The pour point of dehydrated crude oil was analysed and significant reduction in pour point was
noted when treated with 1000 ppm of CRISTOL WD B as shown in Table 1 below.

(B) OFFSHORE OILFIELD IN WESTERN INDIA
CRISTOL WD B was applied in one of the high wax content (17-24 %) and pour point (36-39 oC)
crude oil of 35.4 API gravity from one of the offshore oil field in Western India. Crude oil
produced from this oilfield is evacuated through 20 Km long subsea pipeline which is
subsequently connected to a 142 Km length trunk pipeline.
CRISTOL WD B was tested in crude oils with the dosage of 1000 ppm and resulted the wax
inhibition efficiency of 38 % (Cold Finger test) as shown in Fig. (3).
It was also observed that CRISTOL WD B performed remarkably well with a maximum of 68 %
reduction in Viscosity of crude oils at 27 oC temperature as shown in Fig.(4).

The pour points of crude oil was analysed

and significant reduction in pour point was
noted when treated with different dosage
of CRISTOL WD B as shown in Fig. 5. It was
noted that a pour point depression of 15 oC
was obtained by treating crude oils with
1000 ppm dosage.

ADVANTAGES
In crude oils, application of CRISTOL WD B can lead to -
 Excellent wax inhibition efficiency.
 Reduction in Viscosity.
 Reduction in pour point of crude.
 Inhibit deposition of waxes in the tubing, flow lines and oil processing facilities.
