 The key areas of concern for rotary air compressors (vane and
screw types) are:
 Oxidation
 Foaming and air release
 Wear and EP performance
 Oil carryover and coalescer blockage

 What does an oil do in a reciprocating compressor ?

 In Reciprocating Compressors, the oil

 Lubricates the bearings, pistons, rings, cylinder walls and valves
 Cools crank bearings and pistons
 Seals between piston rings & cylinder walls at high pressures

 The oil must have

 Low deposit forming tendencies
 to stop carbon formation on the piston & valves
 severe build-up of coke can in extreme cases can lead to explosions !
 Excellent oxidation resistance
 as pistons and valves can reach temperature of 300°C
 air discharge temperatures can range from 100 – 350°C
 Good anti-wear properties – to protect machine tolerances
 Good anti-corrosion properties – to protect against hot moist conditions
 Good demulsibility - to aid water/oil separation
