COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course deals with nature of mathematics, appreciation of its

practical, intellectual, and aesthetic dimensions, and application of
mathematical tools in daily life.
COURSE OUTCOMES
Knowledge:
 Discuss and argue about the nature of mathematics, what it is, how it is expressed, represented,
and used.
 Use different types of reasoning to justify statements and arguments made about mathematics
and mathematical concepts.
 Discuss the language and symbols of mathematics.
Skills
 Use a variety of statistical tools to process and manage numerical data;
 Analyze codes and coding schemes used for identification, privacy and security purposes;
 Use mathematics in other areas such as finance, voting, health and medicine, business,
environment, arts and design and recreation.
 Identify the different patterns in nature;
 Articulate the importance of mathematics in real-life situation;
 Argue about the nature of mathematics, what it is, how it is expressed,
represented and used;
 Appreciate mathematics as A part of the human endeavor.
WHAT IS MATHEMATICS??

 “Mathematics, developed by
human mind and culture, is a
formal system of thought for
recognizing, classifying, and exploring
patterns” (Stewart, p.1)
 Mathematics is an art.
HOW CAN YOU DEFINE MATHEMATICS??
WHERE IS MATHEMATICS?

 Nature
 Daily Routine
 In People
 Events
THE FIBONACCI NUMBERS

 Named after Leonardo Fibonacci, also

known as Leonardo of Pisa or Leonardo
Pisano.
 A Fibonacci Number is an integer in the
infinite sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, . . . of
which the first two terms are 1 and 1
(sometimes 0 and 1) and each
succeeding term is the sum of the two
immediately preceding.
WHAT IS MATHEMATICS FOR?

 The proof of mathematics existence in nature and in our world implies

that it is significant to human.
 Mathematics helps us unravel the puzzles of nature.
 Organizes patterns and regularities as well as irregularities
 Enables us to make predictions.
 Mathematics helps us control weather and epidemics.
 Mathematics provides tools for calculations.
 Provides new questions to think about.
WHAT IS MATHEMATICS ABOUT?

 The following concepts tell what mathematics is about:

 Numbers, symbols, notations
 Operations, equations, functions, calculations, abstraction, devising proof
 Processes and “thingification” (The fact or process of turning
something into a thing; reification. )
 Proof – a story rather than a sequence of statements.
HOW IS MATHEMATICS DONE?

 Mathematics is done with curiosity, with a penchant for

seeking patterns and generalities, with desire to know the
truth, with trial and error, without fear of facing more
questions and problems to solve.
WHO USES MATHEMATICS?

 Mathematicians (pure and applied), Scientist (Natural and social) and

generally, EVERYONE in this world uses mathematics.
 But different people use different Math at different times, for different
purposes using different tools, with different attitudes.
