Emotions

– I Feel ____ When….

Goal: The student will identify and label at least 3 situations for each of 5+ emotions. (e.g., I feel happy when I get
presents)

Instructional Procedure:
• Hold up a PCS symbol of an event. Then ask, “How do you feel when….” The student should match it to the template
that contains the lead sentence, “I feel ___ when.” Once the student has matched it to the correct template, follow
up with behaviour specific praise (“Good – you feel __ when…”).
• If the student has the appropriate language skills, ask them to explain why they matched it where they did (e.g., “I feel
nervous at birthday parties because there are so many people and I don’t know who to talk to”)
• Once the student has matched all of the required pictures, follow up with, “Name some times when you feel…” The
student should name at least 3-5 situations for each emotion by looking at the visuals that the student just sorted.
• For some students, encourage them to generate their own situations for their emotions (e.g., “I feel happy when
Mom brings me a special snack from Costco”).

Teaching Steps:
Teach in sets of 3 emotions at a time. Run through steps a-e all at once – just take data on one of the steps.
1. Set of 3 emotions (happy, sad, angry/mad)
a. Student sorts situations into 3 emotions piles – Hold up a picture and ask, “How do you feel when.?” – The
student should take the picture and sort it into the correct pile.
b. Why do you feel ____ when___? (only if the student has the appropriate language skills
c. Expressive – Name some situations when you feel _____. (with visuals out) (+) for each situation the
student has named.
d. Novel situation – Tell me about a time when you felt…. (+) if the student generates a novel response (Only
teach this step if the student has the appropriate language skills)
e. Intraverbal – No visuals – Name some situations when you feel _____. (+) for each situation the student has
named.
2. Another set of 3 emotions (Steps a-e)
3. Randomly rotate (RR) all mastered targets before introducing new sets
4. Etc.

Mastery Criteria: 80% for two consecutive sessions
