Introduction
1. Concept of Percentage:
The word ‘per cent’ is derived from the Latin words ‘per centum’, which
means ‘per hundred’. A percentage is a fraction with denominator
hundred.
And, x percent is written as x%.
x
To express x% as a fraction: We have, x% = .
100
20 1
Thus, 20% = = .
100 5
a a a
To express as a percent: We have, = x 100 %.
b b b
1 1
Thus, = x 100 % = 25%.
4 4
2. Percentage Increase/Decrease:
If the price of a commodity increases by R%, then the reduction in
consumption so as not to increase the expenditure is:
R
x 100 %
(100 + R)
If the price of a commodity decreases by R%, then the increase in
consumption so as not to decrease the expenditure is:
R
x 100 %
(100 - R)

3. Results on Population:
Let the population of a town be P now and suppose it increases at the
rate of R% per annum, then:

4. Results on Depreciation:
Let the present value of a machine be P. Suppose it depreciates at the
rate of R% per annum. Then:
R n
1. Value of the machine after n years = P 1 -
100
P
2. Value of the machine n years ago = R n

Solved Examples
1) Mr X consumes 1000 Kilowatts of electricity per month. Originally,
the bill was 3000 Rs per month, but due to inflation, cost increased to
4000 Rs per month for the same. How much percentage does he need
to reduce the consumption to keep the cost same?
a) 10%
b) 16.67%
c) 20%
d) 25%
e) 50%
Answer 1: d (25%)
Explanation:
Original Case:
1000 kw → 3000 Rs.

New case (Unitary Method):

1000 kw 4000 Rs
x 3000 Rs
On solving, we get:
X= 750 Rs.
1000 − 750
∴ The consumption reduces by = ( ) x100 = 25%

2) The ten’s digit of a number is increased by 100%, whereas the unit’s

digit is decreased by 50%. Then difference between the original number
and new number is 16. What is the original number?
a) 28
b) 14
c) 56
d) 44
e) None of these.
Answer 2: a (28)
Explanation:
Taking options in consideration, we get:

the original number
and new number
a) 28 44 16
b) 14 22 8
c) 56 103 47
d) 44 82 38

3) There are 2 coaching institutes: C and X. The CAT Aspirants either

study in any one or both of them or do self study. Percentage of
students who enrolled in only C and Only X is 40% and 10 %
respectively. Percentage of students doing self study is 40%. Total
number of CAT aspirants is 250000. How many enrolled in both?
a) 10000
b) 15000
c) 20000
d) 25000
e) 30000
Answer 3: d (25000)
Explanation:
Total Number of students = 2,50,000 (100%)
Percentage of Students studying in only C= 40%
Percentage of Students studying in only X= 10%
Percentage of Students doing self study= 40%
∴ Percentage of students in both institutes=100% - 40% - 10% - 40%= 10%
