PCA-Structural Frame Worksheet


Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the structural frame
2. Apply the structural frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

My role will be to assess the current organizational structure of WCK and collaborate
with others to have a sustainable strategy for successful execution to meet the demands of future
needs. Additionally, my role would entail gathering collaboration to make sure there is a leader
who can advocate and have the "political savvy" (Perusall, 2022) to deter unnecessary obstacles
that prevent WCK from supporting these crisis events. Lastly, establishing a platform where they
can share stories to inspire others to advocate, volunteer, or support in any means to create
awareness of the work WCK is providing globally.

With increased disasters occurring yearly, an organization like WCK is crucial to ensure
those impacted are not forgotten or waiting for a logistical solution while working through the
bureaucracy. Unlike many organizations focused on humanitarian efforts, WCK is not hampered
by financial or political implications because it is an autonomous organization capable of
providing immediate hunger relief to those in crisis.

2) Describe how the structure of the organization influenced the situation.

World Central Kitchen's structure and strategy include the local communities they
support. Their food relief not only helps those in need during the disaster, but they also "make
long-term commitments of support in places where we can successfully address chronic food
system challenges with our unique blend of talents and resources" (WCK, n.d.). By planning for
the future in their absence so these communities can be sustainable, WCK's structure resembles
the diagram depicted by Manu Cornet of Apple. For Apple, a core leader shares the vision of
what they are trying to accomplish, and the organization also shares the efforts to achieve
deliverables. Similarly, at WCK, Jose Andrés' passion
for helping the people have the basics to survive after a disaster is the passion and drive shared
by the chefs and their core supporters.

From the research of WCK, I feel comfortable sharing the challenges experienced in
some organizations regarding" how to allocate work (differentiation) and how to coordinate
diverse efforts after parceling out responsibilities (integration)" (Perusall, 2022) is not heavily
present at WCK. The reason to support this is from the success they have seen since its inception
in 2010 after the devastating earthquake in Haiti. They can execute the strategy regardless of
where they are in the world. How? Because the volunteers and organizers all share and believe in
their vision and purpose that "food is a universal human right." (WCK, n.d.). Everyone
understands and recognizes their role is vital to ensuring the people in the impacted areas will be
fed and able to use their local, clean ingredients to continue to support themselves.

3) Recommend how you would use structure for an alternative course of action
regarding your case.

As conflicts and natural disasters increase and WCK is there to help these communities,
the current organizational structure may not be the most efficient. WCK will need to discuss how
to support the growing global need for support. They will need to reflect on their current
structural frame to make necessary changes, so the adjustments as they grow will be fluid rather
than disruptive to their mission and purpose. I suggest bringing Jose Andres and his trusted
partners to discuss the structural imperatives to assess their current state and the next 5-10 years.
What WCK does not want to do is not consider how the demand for their support may not
withstand the number of volunteer chefs in some of these countries. It's impressive that every
day WCK is somewhere in the world providing food to people in disastrous areas.

I fear that as WCK continues to grow at its current pace, its efforts could be disrupted by
the enormity of the need unless they are willing to adjust the current strategies and goals. It will
be imperative WCK is ready to consider and open to modifying to be prepared to absorb and
execute additional demands to their standards. As an organization that strives not only to provide
food but help build resilience in these communities, it compromises its ethics and standards.
Let's also review how each state would welcome and allow WCK to come in to help their
residents if there's a conflict between the U.S. and the state it's supporting. How can WCK stay
relevant to avoid bureaucracies? The answer could be as simple as adjusting to the nature of the
workforce, leaning on the locals, and helping them gain the skills for greater autonomy. Rather
than having a centralized structure where Jose Andres is the central contributor/core of WCK, all
channel networks may be more suitable as the organization's size grows.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

After reading and further researching WCK, it will be imperative for the organization to
address the growing need for their support worldwide. A traditional structural frame will not be
successful with this organization due to its complexity, many moving parts, and ambiguous
predicaments. However, their current approach has been successful in their ability to execute the
plan quickly and efficiently. Success could be based on a solid strategy, clear purpose, and
vision. The real question is, will this strategy of just going to where they are needed enough to
help them continue to provide the help these communities need?

As stated in the previous section, WCK's strategy and the structural frame are effective
because those in the organization, from the volunteers to the founder, share and are passionate
about providing this help. What I would change is revisiting the process of locating the chefs and
understanding they have the resources available to them. Another aspect of the structural frame I
would review is to ensure WCK utilizes the technology as it continues to evolve. It could be the
difference between understanding what's possible to have a seamless transition for a sustainable
process for the locals and not. I believe this could be the most significant opportunity for WCK's
success
