Size separation of solid particles – sieve analysis

Students :
 Mohammed makarim
 Yassir bassim
Summary :
The object of this experiment to determine the particle size distribution of a
sample using sieve analysis .
For this experiment the percent passing of particle in each sieve with mesh number
for each sieve (20,30,40,50,80,100,n200).
The particle distribution curve was obtain by plotting particle size versus mass .
The cumulative percent passing curve was obtained by plotting cumulative percent
passing vs particle size .
The service mean diameter , the volume mean diameter and the median aperture
were determined.
Materials and tools :
 Sieves
 Balance
 Brush
 Sand
 Shaker
Procedure :
1) Each individual sieve was cleaned with brush to move any unwanted
materials on them .

2) The sieves were arranged with the finest at the very bottom of the stack and
the sieve with largest opening is placed on the top.

3) Then we took a sand and we used a balance to get 200gm of sand .

4) We took the 200mg sand to poured in the sieve stack and we had put the
sieves in the shaker and we left it for few minutes

5) After the time end we took each sieve and measured it with the balance to
know each one weight then we had table the results .
Calculations and results :
Experimental result are presented in table
Sieve (mesh) Screen W t retained Wt Cumulative Passing%
no. opening µm on each percentage percentage
screen(gm) retained retained
20 0.850 13.5 6.85 6.85 93.15
30 0.600 41 20.81 27.66 72.34
40 0.425 29 14.72 42.38 57.62
50 0.306 78.5 39.84 82.22 17.78
80 0.180 19 9.644 91.86 8.14
100 0.150 6.5 3.29 94.57 5.43
200 0.74 7.5 3.8 98.37 1.63
pan 2 1.01 99.38 0.62
∑=197 ∑=99.9% ∑=543.29

In the table the second column gives the nominal screen opening in microns . the
third column is the experimental data , for example , the material which passed
through the 20-mesh screen and was retained on the 30 mesh screen is considered
as having average particle size of 0.600 micron .
The remaining columns represent additional ways in which the screen analysis may
be reported and are obtained by simple calculation from column 3.
Retained=mass retained / total mass *100
=13.5 / 197 *100 = 6.85% and for each mass as in the table.
Cumulative percentage mass retained =∑% retained
=6.85+20.81=27.66 and for the others in the table.
Mass passing =100-∑% retained
=100-6.85=93.15
Suface mean diameter ds =1 / ∑(x1 /d1)
=0.0017608
du=0.07
discussion :
1. While we doing the experiment we noticed that there is some of the sand
part sick in the sieves this will cause losses in the weight so The size reducer
equipment was not so accurate in grinding the sample. Some powdered
samples can get stuck on it and removal of these require tedious methods.
On the other hand, through sieve analysis.

2. The filtering happened by using 7 sieves and each one have different size
and it start with the finest opening till the pan (the bottom).

3. each sieves part have different number written on it to know the difference
between them
