4. FIRST AID MEASURES

4.1 Description of first aid measures

Note to physician: Amyl nitrile pearls by inhalation and sodium nitrite by I.V.
may be effective antidotes for H2S exposure. Consult a
poison control center.

Eyes: If irritation or redness develops, move victim away from exposure

and into fresh air. Flush eyes with plenty of water for 15 minutes
while holding eyelids open. If symptoms persist, seek medical
attention.

Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air. Provide oxygen if breathing is

difficult. Apply cardio-pulmonary resuscitation if required. Get
medical attention.

Skin: Wipe material from skin and remove contaminated shoes and
clothing. Cleanse affected area(s) thoroughly by washing with

SAFETY DATA SHEET
mild soap and water and, if necessary, a waterless skin
cleanser. If irritation or redness develops and persists, seek
medical attention.

Ingestion: Aspiration hazard: Do not induce vomiting or give anything by

mouth because this material can enter the lungs and cause
severe lung damage. If victim is drowsy or unconscious and
vomiting, place on the left side with the head down. Seek medical
attention.

Conditions aggravated by ND
exposition:

Medical recommendations: Acute aspirations of large amounts of oil-laden material

may produce a serious aspiration pneumonia. Patients who
aspirate these oils should be followed for the
development of long-term sequeale. Inhalation exposure to oil
mists below current workplace exposure limits is
unlikely to cause pulmonary abnormalities.

Other:
Special H2S Warning: Care must be taken by those who are rendering aid to the
victim because H2S may be in area and may also overcome
rescuers unless it has been determined that the
area is free of hydrogen sulfide. The odor of hydrogen sulfide
may not be recognized after prolonged inhalation due to
paralysis of the sense of smell. Effects from inhaling the fume
may lead to chronic bronchitis, respiratory irritation, increased
loss of pulmonary function, and tearing of the eyes. Refer to
H2S SDS for more detailed information about this material.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

5.1 Properties
Ignition point: 720°F
Flash point (method use): < 24°F
Flammability limits in air % vol.:
Lower: 1.1
Higher: 7.3

5.2 Extinction agents Foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide (CO2) to extinguish
flames. Water spray is recommended to cool or protect exposed
materials or structures. Carbon dioxide can displace oxygen.
Use caution when applying carbon dioxide in confined spaces.
Water may be ineffective for extinguishment, unless used under
favorable conditions by experienced fire fighters.

SAFETY DATA SHEET
5.3 Special procedures for Long-duration fires involving crude or residual fuel oil stored in
firefighting tanks may result in a boilover. The contents
of the tank may be expelled beyond the containment dikes or
ditches. All personnel should be kept back a safe
distance when a boilover is anticipated. For fires beyond
the incipient stage, emergency responders in the immediate
hazards area should wear bunker gear. When
the potential chemical hazard is unknown and in enclosed
or confined spaces, a self-contained breathing apparatus should
be worn. Water spray may be useful in minimizing or dispersing
vapors and to protect personnel. Cool equipment exposed to fire
with water, if it can be done with minimal risk. Avoid spreading
burning liquid with water used for cooling purposes.

5.4 Danger of explosion and This material is flammable and can be ignited by heat, sparks,
unexpected fire flames or other sources of ignition (e.g., static electricity, pilot
lights, or mechanical/electrical equipment, and electronic devices
such as cell phones, computers, calculators and pagers which
have not been certified as intrinsically safe). Vapors may form
explosive mixture with air. Containers may explode under fire
conditions. Severe explosion hazard when exposed to flame.
Flashback along

vapor trail may occur. Vapor explosion hazard indoors,

outdoors or in sewers.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

6.1 Personal precautions Stay upwind and away from spill. Do not enter or stay in
area unless monitoring indicates OK. Isolate hazard
area; restrict entry.

6.2 Environmental precautions Stop the source of the spill. Contain the material released
or spilled by means of inert absorbent (dry clay, dirt or sand), or
commercial absorbents. Recover as much oil as possible with
pumps or vacuum trucks and send it to Slop 0il System or
Solids Handling Facility (Units 63 and 62, respectively). Keep
out of sewers/waterways.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

Revision: 002 Hamaca Blend Crude Oil Date: June 2015

Page: 5/10
SAFETY DATA SHEET

7.1 Precautionary measures Open container slowly to release any pressure. Do not breathe
material. Keep container closed. Use only with adequate
ventilation. Avoid heat, open flames, including pilot lights, and
strong oxidizing agents. Use explosion- proof ventilation to
prevent vapor accumulation. Ground all handling equipment to
prevent sparking. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing.
Wash thoroughly after handling.

Material may release hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a highly toxic and

extremely flammable gas, when heated to 280 degrees F or
higher. H2S may collect in the headspace of the container.

7.2 Handling Ground lines and equipment used during transfer to

reduce the possibility of static spark-initiated fire or
explosion. Use non-sparking tools.

After handling material: Wash with soap and water before eating, drinking, smoking,
applying cosmetics, or using toilet. Launder contaminated
clothing before reuse. Discard saturated leather articles that
cannot be decontaminated. When asphaltic products are
heated, they may give off small amounts of hydrogen
sulfide, an extremely flammable, highly toxic gas.

Avoid breathing hydrogen sulfide. Use ventilation, when

possible, or work upwind of source of vapors, fumes and
mists. H2S is an acutely toxic substance that is
immediately lethal at relatively low concentrations.

Refer to H2S SDS for more detailed information about this

material.

Do not allow molten products to contact water or liquids as this

can cause violent eruptions, splatter hot material or ignite
flammable materials.

7.3 Storage Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, isolated

area with adequate ventilation. Keep away from open
flames and high temperatures.

Container Warnings: Keep containers closed when not in use. Containers, even those
that have been emptied, can contain explosive vapors. Do not
cut, drill, grind, weld or perform similar operations on or near
containers.

Page: 7/10
SAFETY DATA SHEET
exposure limits. Protection provided by air purifying
respirators is limited.

Use a positive pressure air supplied respirator if there is

any potential for an un controlled release, exposure
levels are not known, confined spaces or any other
circumstances where air purifying respirators may not
provide adequate protection, such as the presence of
hydrogen sulfide concentrations reach or exceed 10
ppm.

Ventilation type: Use explosion-proof ventilation as required to control

vapor concentrations. In poorly ventilated areas,
provide exhaust ventilation or other engineering
controls to keep the airborne concentrations of
vapors below their respective threshold limit values.

Type of protective gloves: Use nitrile, PVA, or Viton® gloves to prevent skin
contact. Use Viton® gloves for extended use (more than
4 hours) or immersion. Depending on the conditions of
use, apron and/or arm covers may be necessary.

Type of eye protection: Use safety non-vented goggles glasses to

safeguard against potential eye contact.

Additional protective equipment: Provide an emergency eye wash fountain and quick
drench shower in the immediate work area. Full body
clothing may include CPF2, CPF3, or CPF4 or
Saranex® coated Tyvek®, depending on the task.
Hygiene measures: Wash hands after handling and before eating.
Avoid inhalation and skin contact. Launder work clothes
frequently. Discard saturated leather goods.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

11.1 Information on toxicological effects Crude

Oil (Petroleum) (CAS N 8002-05-9):
Carcinogenicity: Chronic application of crude oil to mouse skin resulted in
an increased incidence of skin tumors. IARC concluded in its
Crude Oil Monograph that there is limited evidence
ofcarcinogenicity in animals, and that crude oil is not
classifiable as to its carcinogenicity in humans. It has not been
listed as a carcinogen by NTP or OSHA.

Developmental: Dermal exposure to crude oil during pregnancy resulted in

limited evidence of developmental toxicity in laboratory animals.
Decreased fetal weight and increased resorptions were noted at
maternally toxic doses. No significant effects on pup growth or
other developmental landmarks were observed postnatally.

n-Hexane (CAS N 110-54-3):

Target Organ(s): Excessive exposure to n-hexane can result in peripheral
neuropathies. The initial symptoms are symmetrical sensory
numbness and paresthesias of distal portions of
the extremities. Motor weakness is typically observed in
muscles of the toes and fingers but may also involve
muscles of the arms, thighs and forearms. The onset of
these symptoms may be delayed for several months to a
year after the beginning of exposure. The neurotoxic properties of
n-hexane are potentiated by exposure to methyl ethyl ketone and
methyl isobuthyl ketone.

Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of n-hexane

(>1000 ppm) has resulted in decreased sperm count and
degenerative changes in the testes of rats but not those of

mice.

Benzene (CAS N 71-43-2):

Carcinogenicity: Benzene is an animal carcinogen and is known to produce
acute myelogenous leukemia (a form of cancer) in
humans. Benzene has been identified as a human
carcinogen by NTP, IARC and OSHA.

Acute toxicity data for Hydrogen Sulfide:

LC50 Inhalation: 712 ppm/ 1h, rat. 673
ppm/ 1h, mouse.
100 ppm/ 7.5h, mouse.
