MOVIE REVIEW: “SEVEN SUNDAYS” (excerpt)

Star Cinema’s “Seven Sundays” revolves around the story of the Bonifacio family, whose
patriarch, Manuel, (Ronaldo Valdez) is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Seeing the family he
built with his now deceased-wife, falling apart, Manuel has only one dying wish: see his four
children together again and reconnected, happy and looking for each other, like when they were
still kids. But time and distance have taken a great toll on his children’s relationships which have
been mostly strained by insecurities and pride among them. His eldest, Allan (Aga Muhlach), is
a struggling father trying to make ends meet for his own family. Bryan (Dingdong Dantes), the
middle child, who despite being the most successful, harbors bitterness towards Allan, whom he
thinks has remained his father’s favorite. Cha (Cristine Reyes), now a mother of three, tries to
hide her malfunctioning marriage, and Dexter (Enrique Gil), the youngest, keeps himself distant
from the family he thinks abandoned him. They are forced to reconcile under the same roof, and
as they try to grant their dying father’s wish, a recollection of their history and some assessment
of where they are and have gone as a family, are inevitably ensued. But Dingdong Dantes has
arguably emerged as the strongest performer. There is a powerful exchange of accusations and
revelation of insecurities among the siblings, where Bryan bares his bitter struggle to prove
himself and his worth in the family. Enrique Gil’s Dexter has practically the same baggage. He
struggles to connect to the members of his family whom he feels left him when he was in need
of someone to guide him through growing up. As anticipated, every member of the family has to
survive the pains of growing up, but it is growing apart that proves to be more damaging to the
Bonifacio family, and it is more evident in Dexter. But then, all these characters radiate around
Manuel, played by Ronaldo Valdez, who has singularly maintained his dramatic genius
throughout the film. His struggle as a father trying to keep the foundations of his already rattled
family makes his character accessible, hence it emerges as the most relatable element of the
film. For what it’s worth, while “Seven Sundays” struggles to abandon the conventions of its
genre, this Cathy Garcia-Molina-helmed family drama turns out to be actually memorable. Its
utter earnestness to relate a familiar story moves the film to levels that are bracing enough to
capture the audience and tug at their heartstrings. With its poignant sentiments about family, it
hits right in the heart, and for that, “Seven Sundays” is exceptional.
On a separate sheeß of paper, use the graphiG organfier tα show the order of evento recounted in the film review.

BEGINNING

Manuel has been given the news that he has a terminal illness. Manuel has only one dying wish
after seeing the family he formed with his now-deceased wife fall apart: to see his four children
reunited and reconnected, joyful and looking for each other like they did when they were young.
However, time and distance have wreaked havoc on his children's relationships, which have
been strained by their fears and pride. Allan, his eldest son, is a struggling father striving to
provide for his family. Bryan, the middle kid, feels bitter towards Allan, whom he believes has
remained his father's favorite, despite the fact that he is the most accomplished. Cha, now a
mother of three, tries to hide her shattered marriage, while Dexter, the youngest, distances
himself from the family he believes abandoned him.

MIDDLE

They are compelled to reunite under the same roof, and as they attempt to fulfill their dying
father's wish, a memory of their history and an appraisal of where they are and have gone as a
family eventually occur. Bryan bares his hard fight to prove himself and his worth in the family in
a powerful exchange of accusations and revelations of anxieties among the siblings.Dexter
carries around a lot of the same baggage. He finds it difficult to connect with members of his
family, whom he believes abandoned him when he needed someone to assist him through his
childhood.

ENDING

As expected, each member of the family must go through the trials of growing up, but it is the
Bonifacio family's growing apart that proves to be the most harmful, as Dexter demonstrates.
But, as all of these individuals revolve around Manuel, his struggle as a parent attempting to
keep the foundations of his already shaky family in place makes his character relatable.

Additional Activities
Write a three-tα-five paragraph essag abouß the episodeo of your life, using the evento thaß you recorded on the

table beginning from childhood tα young adulthood. Be guided bg the following criteria.

STORY OF MY LIFE

On the 26th day of August, a healthy beautiful baby was born and that is me. My mom named
me Jan Krystel. I don't know where it came from but my mom told me that she saw the name
“Jan” on one of the nurses of the hospital .She found it uniquely and she applied it to me. My
Mom and Dad always give their best to take care of us because they love me and my brother so
much. At the age of 3, my Mom found out that I have potential in singing and at the age of 4 I
started to learn how to dance because of my cousin cristy. August 26, 2010 we celebrated my
7th birthday, everything is so perfect and everyone is happy. I am thankful for my mom and dad
for all the efforts that they are doing to me.

In my grade school years, I was a academic- student performer. It all started when I was in
grade 4, I was chosen and told that I was one of the contestants in a district dance competition
that was held at Cupang Elementary School. We won and continued our battle and won again
but 2nd place at Starmall Alabang for the Division Competition. In grade 5, I was chosen again
to represent our school in a singing competition that is held at Bagong Silang Elementary
School. I was not feeling well that day, I had a very high fever and cough but still continued
fighting for my school. Even though I didn't win the 1st placer, my mom and teachers are still
proud of me for being the 2nd placer. They told me that they were happy because I gave my
best that day and it made me cry. In Grade 6 I was elected as the “Little Mayor 2015 “ of District
2. I am also a journalist and won a place in a “Write it Right” Competition in Cubao. I also won a
reward as a “Student Performer of the year” and got 19 medals in my elementarydays.

In 2016, I started studying as a grade 7 student at Muntinlupa National Highschool Main. It’s a bit
hard because you don’t have any friends to talk with because you are a freshman. As years
passed by, i made many friends because i am a jolly and friendly person. I stayed consistent as
an Honor student until I graduated in Grade 10. Now I am part of senior highschool and it is very
challenging and quite exciting but I am also terrified. Everyday I always give my best and do all
the things that can help me with my future.

Lesson 2: Coherence and Cohesion

What’s New
Set A. Number the sentences to form a well-structured paragraph.
2 A. I knew that we will go to their house to celebrate her birthday but during that time, I
was still in our school because of my training for campus journalism.
5 B. I talked to her and said sorry for what I had done and I explained my reasons for not
attending her birthday. At last, I was still thankful to her for understanding mysituation.
1 C. It was 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon when Angelita called me over the phone
and said that she was waiting for me at 7/11 store together with our otherfriends.
3 D. It's hard for me to choose what should I prioritize but I ended up staying in
school.
4 E. On the next day, I saw her inside our room and it seemed that she did not
want to look at me.

Seß B. Combine the sentences in each set into two clear sentences. Add a transitional
word or phrase to the second to show how it relates to the first. Here is an example.

● Retirement should be the reward for a lifetime of work.

● It is widely viewed as a sort of punishment.
● It is a punishment for growing old.

● Retirement should be the reward for a lifetime of work. Instead, it is widely viewed as a
sort of punishment for growing old.
Now, iß’o your turn!
● There are differences in English performance between boys and girls.
● These differences cannot be attributed simply to differences in innate ability.
● If one were to ask the children themselves, they would probably disagree.

Boys and girls have different levels of English proficiency. These disparities,
however, cannot be explained just by differences in natural ability. Even if the children
themselves were asked, they would most likely disagree.

What’s More
For items 1-3, combine each pair of sentences by changing one sentence to a subordinate
clause. Use appropriate subordinating conjunction to link the ideas.

Sample: I got tired. It was so late.

Answer: I got tired because it was so late.

1. I was studying my lesson. I heard a loud crash in the next room.

● I wao studying mg lesson when I heard a loud crash in the n➢ß room.
2. I pulled the blankets on my bed. I was afraid.
● I pulled the blanketo on mg bed because I wao afraid.
3. I finally got up from where I was sitting. I heard the cat’s meow.
● I finallg goß up from where I wao sitting a$er I heard the caß'o meow.

For items 4-5, continue the story by completing the sentences.

4. I went to get a broom so that I can clean mg messg room.

5. I did not get very much sleep that night because I needed tα complete mg remaining activitieo.

What I Have Learned

Using a Venn diagram, write the similarities and differences between coherence and cohesion.
What I Can Do
On a draft paper, jot down all your ideas about the word happiness. Decide how to organize
them by observing coherence and cohesion in writing your paragraph. Then, review the draft
and check on your use of cohesive ties before writing your second drafts.

The secret to happiness, in my view, is found inside each of us.

First and foremost, happiness comes from inside, and while it can be influenced by
external influences, we will not be satisfied until we know where to look for it. Most of us believe
that if we buy what we really want or if we are wealthy, we will be satisfied. However, this is
merely a misunderstanding. Happiness is based on emotions rather than objects.

Second, happiness is similar to a closed door. We must first find the door in order to find
the key, and in order to do so, we must first gain a better understanding of ourselves. We can
feel warm on the inside by assisting others and seeing their smiles. That is what happiness is.
Happiness is something that can be chosen. And once we know this, we'll be on our way to
discovering the key.

To summarize, I believe that all we need to do to discover the secret to happiness is to

properly open our eyes to see what the majority cannot.
Additional Activities
Rewrite the paragraph below by organizing the flow of ideas. Make sure that the links are made
clear between each point.

One of my favorite books is entitled “Me Before You”. It’s written by Jojo Moyes. It
has a movie adaptation that was directed by Thea Sharrock. The movie adaptation and the
written book show similarities and differences. The plot of the book and the movie are
completely the same. The catch in some parts of the book are not in the movie. The movie
adaptation catches the gist of the book’s story. Regarding emotions, both the book and movie
justify the tragic ending of the story. I was more moved to the movie adaptation. I can clearly
see the scene with a good background, the emotion of the character portrayed by the actors,
and I can clearly hear the dialogues. Both are enjoying but I was more satisfied with the book.
It’s very detailed. The movie can offer you the whole package without the sense of curiosity. If
I were to choose between its published book and movie adaptation, I would choose the book.
Books can be a wild curious journey of the reader or traveler.

"Me Before You" is the title of one of my favorite novels. Jojo Moyes is the
author. It was adapted into a film directed by Thea Sharrock. There are similarities and
variations between the movie adaptation and the written book. The plots in both the
book and the film are identical. Any of the book's catchphrases do not appear in the
film. Any of the book's catchphrases do not appear in the film. The film adaptation
captures the essence of the book's plot. In terms of feelings, both the book and the film
justify the story's tragic conclusion. The movie adaptation moved me more. I can see
the scene with a good context, feel the feeling of the characters depicted by the actors,
and hear the dialogues. Both are enjoyable, but I found the book to be more satisfying.
It's extremely informative. The film will provide you with the complete package without
the element of surprise. If I had to choose between the book and the film adaptation, I
would go for the book. A reader's or traveler's journey through a book may be a wild
and curious one.

Dear Sir/Madame,

I hope you're doing great today. I am writing an appeal to take legal action against
human activities to the endanger wildlife in our locality.

I believe that people in our area need to learn about endangered species. I
suggest that teach our friends and family about the wonderful wildlife, birds, fish and
plants that live near us. The first step to protecting endangered species is learning about
how interesting and important they are. This will be possible if the local government of
Muntinlupa will take a plan and action to this situation.

In light of these facts, I request that you reconsider my appeal.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this and I am happy to meet with you
anytime soon to discuss this matter.

scoring rubric.
1. How can pets make you happy and improve your life?
2. How to keep a virus-free environment?
3. Why do you want to pursue your desired career?

"How can pets make you happy and improve your life"

Animals have been companions to our ancestors for thousands of years, but more for
hunting rather than as intimate friends. Dogs and cats, for example, now mostly enjoy human
companionship, and some of them are even more pampered than before. Pets, or animals in
general, offer happiness and positivity to humans. And if certain people do not own a pet, they
will always see them by going to zoos or watching documentaries or social media posts that will
either make them cry, laugh at their antics, or just be amazed at what they are capable of.

I have a cat before, I remembered I find it amazing that having a pet makes it easier for
me to deal with stressful circumstances. Playing with cats releases feel-good chemicals in our
brain like dopamine and oxytocin, which are known to trigger pleasure and happiness. It is also
can help to lower our blood pressure. They improve our life because pets, particularly dogs and
cats, can help with stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as loneliness, exercise, and
playfulness. They can also help with cardiovascular health. Taking care of an animal will help
children become more stable and active as they grow up. Pets are also a great source of
companionship for senior citizens.

Pets are beneficial to our body, mind, and soul. They enhance our feeling of well-being.
They provide us with compassion, laughter, and, most importantly, happiness. They are
unconcerned about our appearance, financial status, social position, creed, color, age, or state
of health. They see us for who we really are, free of the trappings of everyday life. As a former
pet owner, I can attest to the fact that having an animal who loves you unconditionally can make
life a whole lot easier. After all, many of us struggle to sustain relationships or just get through
the day in our daily lives.

What I Have Learned

Write your insights about the quote from Terry Pratchett:

“Let grammar, punctuation, and spelling into your life! Even the most energetic and wonderful
mess has to be turned into sentences.”

● I agree. Poor spelling and grammar knowledge can trigger serious issues and
make it difficult for readers to comprehend the text. Obviously, the reader's
opinion of you as well as your experience would be tainted from the start. Of
course, the lecturer will be able to figure out what you're talking about, but the key
point could be overlooked.

What I Can Do

A famous American writer and orator, Frederick Douglas, once said, “Once you learn to read,
you will be forever free.” Douglas meant that reading gives you the freedom to explore the world
and bring that world into a new dimension of learning and discovery. Do you mainly agree or
disagree with him? What are some of the effects of reading such as books, newspapers,
magazines, and even e-books on our lives? Are these effects mainly negative, positive, or both?

Explain your position in an essay of five paragraphs. Use specific examples to support your
view. Observe the mechanics in writing and be guided by the following criteria:
"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free"

This quote reminds me of the importance of reading in our lives. When we learn to
read, we open up a world of possibilities for ourselves. In the world of education, reading is the
secret to success in everything we do. I believe that education and freedom are inextricably
linked, and that reading is the foundation of learning. As a result, one of the most important
things we can do is teach children to learn.

Learning to read entails both listening and comprehending what is written on the
paper. We are exposed to a wide variety of words as we listen to tales. This helps us expand
our vocabulary and develop our listening comprehension, which is essential when we begin to
learn. Basically, reading is the only way to accomplish these goals because we need to read to
learn new things, to improve our skills, and to keep up with current events.

What will happen if we don't learn to read? An example, our minds begin to wander,
and our attention span begins to dwindle. Since our brain has to work harder to process
information, we become agitated or anxious. Children who do not learn to read by the end of
third grade are more likely to remain bad readers for the rest of their lives and to fall behind in
other academic fields, according to research.

Reading activates the right hemisphere of our brain and expands our horizons. It
literally opens up new possibilities and concepts in our minds, allowing us to view and analyze
the world through the eyes of others. It inspires you to think about things that aren't possible.
Things that we don't normally consider.

Once you learn to read, you will be forever free. To sum up, this quote tells us that
education is the key to achieving the freedom. Literacy skills are important for personal growth
and serve as a foundation for independence. Independence is essential not only in thought but
also in our existence.
