Study Case: Antasari-Blok M Elevated Highway

Traffic Volume

Traffic volume can be defined number of vehicles passing through a segment of a

highway or road. A highway can have a maximum capacity at any given time but if the demand
is higher than the capacity, it could cause lower level of service.

Capacity is defined as the maximum hourly rate vehicles can occupy a given segment
of a highway. It is often expressed as the passenger car units (PCU), and below are the typical
values of PCU:

Level of service (LoS) is included in this study case since the observer states that the
highway is always congested. LoS indicates the level of comfort in the road segment, which is
based on the performance level such as speed, density, etc. Therefore, a parameter of LoS is
evaluated, it is expressed with letters A, B, C, D, E, and F, where A is the best while F is the
worst.

K Factor

It is defined as the proportion of average annual daily traffic (AADT) occurring at an

hourly rate. In this study case, the observer only observes the average daily traffic (ADT).

Peak Hour Factor

It represents the ratio of total hourly volume to the peak flow rate inside the peak hour.
Based on this study case, it is possible to determine the PHF since the data for hourly traffic
volume is given by the observer. The observer noticed that the peak hour occurs during the
morning (07.00 to 09.00) and the evening (16.00 to 18.00). Below is the data, where is the lane
from North to South and red is from South to North:

Daily Factor

It refers to the observed traffic volume which is recorded each day from Monday to
Sunday and quantifies the average of this recorded 7-day traffic volume. Subsequently,
determine the daily factor for each by dividing the average traffic volume over the observed
traffic volume on that day. Hence, average weekly volume can be obtained.
In this study case, the observer did the experiment in two days, therefore, there is
insufficient data necessary to determine the daily factor. However, despite the lack of a 7-day
observation data, it is still possible to calculate it by dividing the daily traffic with the average
daily traffic of the two days.

Seasonal Factor

Like daily factors, but for a longer range of time. Instead of observing the traffic daily,
it records the traffic volume monthly from January to December. However, the same formula
applies when finding the average of the traffic volume for each month and the seasonal factor.
Thus, average annual volume can be determined.

It is difficult to determine the average annual volume from the given data.
