Instruction: From the Visayan poem entitled: "USA KA GABIING WAY SUD-AN UG WAY
BITUON UG SA AKONG NASABTAN ANG ANGAY BASULON MAO ANG KULAFUNG
GILAKLAK NI PAPA", by Adonis Durado, substantiate the following questions:

1. What is the message that the author would like to convey to the readers?
- This poem by Adonis Durado is very true to life and relatable. The art of poetry, language, humor and life
itself is contained in this poem. This poem speaks about the struggle of every family having a father who is
a drinker and a mother who has a high pride. In this poem, it is humorously stated how the mother and
father got in to an altercation and how it ended. The message that the author would like to convey to the
readers is that the foundation for a good family is to have a good communication and relationship of the
mother and the father and that both should change their ways for the better. This poem showed both the
bad qualities of the mother and the father. They both had high pride for themselves with the father being a
drinker who is very demanding and acts like he provided everything for his family and the mother who has
also a high pride who doesn’t tolerate the behavior of his husband and doesn’t also let his husband degrade
him easily. The ending of the altercation of the mother and the father in the poem did not end in good terms
and if you don’t want your family to end up like that, then you should encourage your parents to have a
good relationship.
2. What are the different mental pictures found in the poem? Enumerate the lines.
- In the line, “napungot si papa ug misid-ok ang buwan milapos sa bintana ang kaldero” I can picture it
in my mind that the father is becoming so furious and enraged that he just violently throws the pots
everywhere in the house and that every light/fragile material that will be hit will be broken like the glass
window.
tsak tsak tsak tsak tsak tsak tsak tsak tsak tsak tsak tsak tsak” I can picture this in my mind as an intense
action movie where the protagonist and the antagonist fiercely face off against each other. This reminds
me of a John Wick movie where every fight result in bloodshed just like in this line of the poem where the
mother and the father stab each other with a knife and blood spreads everywhere.
- In the line, “ug sa kalagot ni mama gitagud-tagod niya si papa kini loug gibutang sa freezer” I can picture
in my mind that the mother is chopping her husband’s body like a butcher. This reminds me of Jeffrey
Dahmer, a serial killer who also dismantled the body of his victims and place them in the freezer and on a
big drum.
dominggo dihang wala na miy sud-an” I can picture in my mind that the mother is cooking every body part
of her husband just like how every Filipino dish is cooked. Like the wife would add spices, condiments, and
other ingredients but the difference is that the main ingredients for the dish are the father’s body parts.
This is what someone would do if they are too stressed because of not having food on their table anymore
or this is just a kind of cannibalistic act.
3. What is your personal point of view of the poem of Adonis Durado?
- I think that this poem is a great representation of the most common problems in a family which are pride
and miscommunication. I also can relate to this poem because my father is also a drinker and sometimes,
he drinks during his day of work. There is always this situation in which my mom will remind my father
that he has work later and that he shouldn’t drink too much but my father keeps on insisting that nothing
knows himself more than him and that my mom shouldn’t worry about him getting too drunk because he’s
in control of everything. And then when my father wakes up from a nap after he got drunk, he always gets
so moody and then scolds my mom for waking him up too early to get ready for work. Or like after his work
he would tell my mom that his body is in pain and he was tired after work and my mom would tell him that
it was because you didn’t listen to me and that you dare to scold and act rude to me when in fact that I only
care about you being able to go to work healthy and orderly. So, this poem is very much relatable and can
accurately describe the situation that every family is experiencing. The balance of humor, artistry,
language, and life in this poem is perfect and I would highly recommend everyone to discover more about
the works of Adonis Durado.
4. If you are to give a shortened title of the poem, what would it be and why?
- If I were to give a shortened title of the poem, I would name it “Ang Panagtigi sa Kagabhiong
Mangitngiton, Miresultas Pag-hilak ug Dugo sa mga Langit” because the main highlight of the poem is the
exaggerated and bloody conflict between the mother and father. In the poem, the mother did not literally
kill his husband and made use of his body as a meal for almost a week but that’s just the way the author
artistically describes that the conflict between the mother and the father did not end in good terms and that
they would still bring up the issue of not having food on their table for 7 days.
