INSULATION WORK
FWBS CODE : 9000

Only Surface Area of Piping Items By Piping


1. This category covers insulation work, such as hot insulation, cold insulation and acoustic insulation, at the
site and/or designated preassembling yards including preparation of materials, application of single or
multiple layers of insulation materials, jacketing by metal sheet, application of hard cement, mastic, taping,
etc.

They are identified under JGC's Functional Work Breakdown Structure (FWBS) as follows:

2. Further details of work categories are broken down with relevant FWBS Code and detail definitions of scope
of work are shown in the following sections "SCOPE OF WORK/JOB DESCRIPTION".

It shall be noted that each work category shows major work items only. All other associated activities until
the completion of the category including the work stated in para. 3 below, shall be deemed to be included in
this scope of work.

3. The following shall be deemed to be in this scope of work:

o Selection of insulation materials and its application method in accordance with JGC's specifications and
preparation of work procedures to obtain JGC's approval.

o Setting-up of site workshops and material storage yards.

o Pre-foaming of insulation blocks and prefabrication of jacketing materials.

o Surface cleaning including wiping and drying prior to the application of insulation materials.

o Welding and fixing pop rivets/clips/stud bolts on equipment/piping surfaces for fastening
wires/bands/netting.

* Work method, materials to be used, parts or position for welding/fixing, etc., shall be confirmed with
and approved by JGC's representative prior to the start of the work.

o Provision of expansion/contraction joints as specified.

o Sealing and caulking as specified.

o Provision of removable inspection holes as shown in JGC's drawings and specifications.

o Provision of removable insulation materials with boxes/covers for flange joints, valves, in-line piping
components, instruments, rotary machinery, etc., as specified.

o Removing of insulation materials and its boxes/covers/jackets for hot bolting or cold bolting of flange
joints on piping and equipment during the commissioning stage and the restoring after the completion of
the bolting.

o Touching-up for damages and defects occurred in the applied insulation during construction including in-
progress modifications.

o Erection of necessary scaffolding for the Contractor's work and disassembling thereof.

HOT INSULATION

It covers application works of hot insulation including personnel protection and jacketing.

o This scope of work category is broken down into the following subcategories according to the objects to be
insulated and defined under JGC's Functional Work Breakdown Structure:

-9110 EQUIPMENT/FLANGE COVER

The insulation works for vessels, exchangers, rotary equipment, storage tanks, furnaces, boilers,
and other machinery.

Flange covers for equipment manholes, equipment nozzles, exchanger shells, etc., and removable
box covers for rotary machinery are also included.

-9120 PIPING & FITTINGS

The insulation works for piping, fittings, tubing, in-line components such as strainers, flow
meters, expansion joints, orifices/venturi-tubes, etc., but except valves and instruments.

Covers for flanges on piping and removable box covers for the in-line components indicated
above are also included.
-9130 VALVE

The insulation works for independent valves including control valves, etc.

Covers and removable box covers for valves are also included.

-9140 INSTRUMENT

The insulation works for independent instruments including analyzers, pressure lead tubes and
sampling tubes with tapping nozzles/in-line valves.

Covers and removable box covers for instruments are included as shown in specifications and as
instructed by JGC's representatives.

COLD INSULATION
FWBS CODE : 9200

It covers application works of cold insulation including vapor barriers and jacketing.

o This scope of work category is broken down into the following subcategories according to the objects to be
insulated and defined under JGC's Functional Work Breakdown Structure:

-9210 EQUIPMENT/FLANGE COVER

The insulation works for vessels, exchangers, rotary equipment, storage tanks, and other
machinery.

Flange covers for equipment manholes, equipment nozzles, exchanger shells, etc., and insulation
for the equipment supports/skirts and the support lugs for platforms/stairs/ladders attached to the
equipment are also included.
Surface Area by Mechanical / Rotary
-9220 PIPING &FITTINGS

The insulation works for piping, fitting, tubing, in-line components such as strainers, flow
meters, expansion joints, orifices/venturi-tubes, etc., but except valves and instruments.

Insulation for pipe supports/shoes and nozzles such as blank-offs, drains, vents, taps for
instruments/sampling, etc., are also included.
-9230 VALVE

The insulation works for independent valves including control valves, etc.

Covers and removable box covers for valves are also included.

-9240 INSTRUMENT

The insulation works for independent instruments including analyzers, pressure lead tubes and
sampling tubes with tapping nozzles/ in-line valves.
Surface Area by Instrument
Insulation for supports and shoes thereof are also included.

o In case of the foaming of polyurethane insulation material at the site shop, JGC's prior approval for the work
procedure shall be obtained.

The work includes:

- Proper storage for materials (chemicals) with weather protection, fire protection, ventilation, etc.,

- Trial foaming and quality verification

- Preparation of forms for foaming

- Pre-foaming and shaping of insulation blocks

o In case of the direct foaming of polyurethane insulation material for piping, equipment, etc., at work site, the
same work procedure shall be followed as for the case of site shop foaming.

In addition, preparation of spacers, protection for adjacent structures, cleaning for surroundings, etc., shall be
included.

 De-icing of flanges and/or objects to be insulated shall be included before the application of insulation
materials.
