V. Implementation

A. Introduction –

1. “Students, today we will be learning about garbage collectors and mail carriers!”
2. Students will watch this video:

3. Now we get to read a Scholastic News about the responsibilities of a garbage
collector.

B. Development –

1. The teacher will discuss things the garbage collector will take and things that
should be recycled and what is trash. The teacher will use the Scholastic News
“Who Picks Up the Trash?” with the students and go over the responsibilities of a
garbage collector. Go over the scholastic news with the students.
2. “Now that we learned a little about garbage collectors, let’s learn more about mail
carriers”
3. The teacher will read the book “A Day with a Mail Carrier” by Jan Kottke.
4. The teacher and the students will discuss the steps the postcard will take to get
to their houses.
a. Postcards are stamped and put in the mailbox.
b. Mailman picks them up.
c. They go to the post office and get a postmark stamp.
d. They get transferred to the mail truck to be delivered.
e. The mailman delivers them to the student’s home.

C. Closure –

1. Ask students to think about one new thing they learned today and pause for a
few seconds. Ask them to turn and talk with a partner to share their answer.
Students share their answers for one minute.
2. Today we learned about Garbage collectors and Mail carriers and how they help
our community.
