UNIT VIII MINI PROJECT 2

Communication is the way a message is relayed between the sender and the receiver. In

the business world, this is basically how the leaders of a company relay the expectations and

desired outcomes to their employees. With the advances of technology, communication is no

longer just face-to-face or written down. Communication can be verbal, non-verbal, and visual.

Choosing the correct form of communication is key to success of the business and achieving

goals set forth.

For this assignment we are going to use Wal-mart for and example of how to use a good

communication strategy to reach out to all of the employees. Because Wal-Mart is such a huge

organization, it is impossible to be able to pass on messages to everyone all at once. This

eliminates the face-to-face aspect of communication. Sending out e-mails to everyone is just not

possible either as not every employee has access to an email to receive the messages. The best

option for communication strategy would be visual, such as a video that is posted and

broadcasted out to the internal television networks within the store.

Creating a recorded video from the leader of the organization is going to give every

employee a chance to not only see the message that is being delivered but also to hear the

conviction in the voice of the sender. Understandably, not every employee works at the same

time so when it is originally broadcasted it will not be seen at that time, but it can be archived

and replayed again at any given time to give everyone the opportunity to hear the message. Wal-

Mart has been doing this for quite some time and has also implemented ways to receive feedback

from the employees who have questions or need clarification. Each store manager gives the

employees opportunities to come and speak to them to bring up the ladder of management in

order to address the concerns.

Recently, the Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon posted a video about the recent

events of COVID-19 in this country. He addressed his concerns for the safety of all of his

employees and the customers that shop at Wal-Mart. His message was meant to be seen by every

Wal-Mart associate to let them know that he sees the problems that we are facing and that he is

there answer any questions they may have. In that video he mentioned that a new software

program was being released for employees to answer questions about their health to decide

whether or not it was safe for them to work. Also, a new application was created in the store that

could provide feedback about employees concerns.

Using this type of strategic communication was smart in the fact that it was able to

portray what Doug McMillon was trying to get across. He knew what he was trying to achieve

which was to get the information to all of his employees about the pandemic that was taking

place and the steps he was going to take to ensure the safety of employees and customers.

Knowing that everyone reacts to change differently, he was sure to present in a way where he

knew his employees would react. He brought up questions himself that he thought people would

ask and he answered them to the best of his ability. Not knowing how long this virus was going

to be around and the fact we didn’t know much about it he knew his employees were going to be

scared of trying to adapt to this new way of living. When delivering this message, Doug knew

there were going to be people that would fight back about the new changes, but he ensured

everyone that the policies were only changing to keep the best interests of the employees and

customers in mind. He kept in mind who he was talking to and knew that his employees were

strong and able to adapt. He knew they didn’t want to have to be exposed to this virus any more

than they needed to be and he ensured them that Wal-Mart was taking steps to provide personal

protective gear to keep them safe.

As stated before, the world is changing at a rapid rate and we have to change with it. We

need to be able to adapt to the new ways of communication and role with them in order to be

successful. If a company can show that they are willing to change and communicate with their

employees and customers, that will gain plenty of trust to keep them running successfully for

years to come.
