S-Range
- a new concept
To further streamline SKF customer service
a number of items from the broad assortment
of SKF bearings has been carefully selected.
These make up the S-Range, application orientated
bearing ranges for specific application areas.
The selection of each S-Range item is based on
wide SKF experience in the bearing application
field, built through contact with bearing users
all over the world.
'
It is SKF policy to supply virtually every type
of bearing to meet customer requirements. But
with S-Range, SKF now offers customers addi-
tional benefits:

- Simplified bearing selection and application

design work coupled with confidence in the
suitability of the range offered.

- Short delivery times.

- Long term supply stability.

- Worldwide availability.

- No minimum order quantities.

- Simplified ordering and stocking.

Cranes - general

Crane manufacturers have always tried to

match the crane design to the widely differ-
ing service conditions, consequently a large
number of different crane types exist.
Nevertheless, certain equipment such as
travelling wheels, rope sheaves, crane hooks
and gearboxes are fairly common to all.
Because a failure may have disastrous
consequences, all hoisting equipment has to
be designed very carefully, therefore certain
design criteria and dimensioning rules, which
are specified in national standards, have to
be followed. Rules established by the Euro-
pean Material Handling Federation (F.E.M.),
for example, are generally used in the calcu-
lations connected with the selection of the
equipment and its associated bearings.
.. The bearing arrangements for the drives
of travelling wheels, travelling crabs,
winches, jib and stewing arrangements are
I not covered in this S-Range, as they do not
differ from the normal stationary gear.
Reference should therefore be made to the
S-Range leaflet for industrial gearboxes.
Similarly, for the bearing arrangements for
electric motors reference should be made to
the appropriate S-Range leaflet.
A subsidiary of the SKF Group, RKS
produces a wide selection of stewing rings
for use on cranes. These are generally tailor-
made to meet individual requirements and
are not dealt with here. Reference should be
made to the SKF catalogue "RKS slewing
rings".

both sides are ideal for use with medium-

are able to accommodate very heavy radial
loads and also simultaneously acting axial
loads; the absence of a cage does mean,
however, that they do not have the same
high speed capability as the more conven-
tional "caged" cylindrical roller bearings.
Their low sectional height permits a compact
design whereby the weight of sheaves can
be reduced considerably, an important factor
when the sheaves are used with mobile
cranes. These bearings are supplied ready-
filled with a suitable lubricating grease and
are maintenance-free under certain operating
conditions. However, when exposed to
damp or dirt, or when operating at high
speeds for long periods they must be relubri-
cated. Relubrication facilities have therefore

be adjusted carefully during mounting. Apart
from their use in crane gearboxes, taper
roller bearings are also employed to a cer-
tain extent in crane travelling wheel appli-
cations and sheaves.

Thrust ball bearings

Single direction thrust ball bearings are suit-
able for the accommodation of axial loads in
one direction only and should not be sub-
jected to radial loads. The bearings are sep-
arable and mounting is simple as the com-
ponents can be mounted individually. They
are generally used in crane hooks.

Spherical roller thrust bearings

These bearings are used when axial carrying
capacity is the prime requirement. Neverthe-
less, they have two main advantages over
other thrust bearing types in that they are
self -aligning and can also carry significant
simultaneously acting radial loads. They are
ideal for use as pivot bearings in large
slewing cranes where heavy axial loads are
encountered; they are also used in crane
hooks.

Data on all the bearings included in this

Bearing selection
Spherical roller bearings from series 232 CC

Bearing arrangement
In this type of arrangement the wheel is
mounted between the bearings. The inner
rings of the bearings will, therefore, rotate
with the wheel shaft, which means they
must be mounted with an interference fit.
Plummer block housings, also circular,
angled or special flanged type housings may
be used to accommodate the spherical roller
bearings; fig 6 shows an application with an
angled housing.
With driven crane wheels the non-locating
bearing should be mounted on the coupling

Bearing arrangements for sheaves and pulleys
A study of the application fields for sheaves
and pulleys has permitted a division of the
range into the three categories - light,
medium and heavy. There is, however, some
degree of overlapping between the cat-

The bearings shown in the matrices for
these applications have Normal radial inter-

used with materials other than cast iron or
steel, for example aluminium or plastic
(which require the bearings to be mounted
with an interference fit) bearings with radial
internal clearance greater than Normal can
be supplied by SKF on request.

Alternative bearing arrangement

Taper roller bearings can also be used in
this application, see fig 12. The SKF pre-
adjusted double row taper roller bearings,
identified by drawing numbers of series
4422(00) with bore diameters ranging from
50 to 200 mm, can be supplied with two
shields which give adequate protection under
normal operating conditions. Further details
will be supplied by SKF on request.

bearings are recommended for the larger
hooks but, in order to give the user more
choice, bearings from the heavier series 513
have also been included in this S-Range, see
matrix. For heavy loads where space is
limited spherical roller thrust bearings may
be used. However, the high starting friction
experienced with spherical roller thrust bear-
ings may cause problems where heavy cargo
has to be rotated.

Bearing arrangement
Fig 15 and 16 show typical bearing arrange-
ments for crane hooks incorporating one
thrust ball bearing and one spherical roller
thrust bearing respectively. The load is
transmitted to the thrust bearing via the
thread on the hook shaft and a strong nut.
Arrangements must be made to ensure that
the bearing is not damaged when the hook is
relieved of its load.

As the permissible loads in this type of ar-
rangement are usually high it is advisable to
/ I
restrict the permissible angular misalignment /
of one bearing ring to the other to 1o. This
applies to the radial spherical roller bearing
I
as well as the spherical roller thrust bearing.
The axial load is transmitted to the thrust
bearing via a disc made from a hard syn-
thetic material which has a low coefficient
of friction. This ensures that the thrust bear-
ing only takes axial load.
In this arrangmeent the static safety factor
s0 should not fall below 2,0 under maximum
operating load and 1,8 under overload. A
static safety factor of 1,0 is sufficient for
the radial bearing. These s0 values refer to
the static load ratings in the SKF General
Catalogue.

Lubrication
The bearings should be completely immersed
in oil, not only to ensure efficient lubrication
of the heavily loaded contacts between
rollers and raceways but also to provide
protection against corrosion which could
occur as a result of condensation inside the
housing. Because of the slow movement of
the heavily loaded bearings there is a danger
that metallic contact might occur between
rollers and raceways and thus lead to smear-
ing. An oil with a high viscosity will give the
best results. By adding molybdenum disul-
