Unit/Topic: Fairy Tale Narrative

Key Learning Area: Good characters in fairy tales

Year Level: 3 and 4

ACARA Connections:
Discuss the nature and effects of some language devices used to enhance meaning and shape the
reader’s reaction, including rhythm and onomatopoeia in poetry and prose (ACELT1600 - Scootle )

Unit overview: During the students have been exploring fairy tales. Students have explored bad
characters, fairy tale elements, setting and other narrative features (speech marks, time connectives
and alternatives to said) . At the end of the unit students will apply their knowledge to create their
own fairy tales.

Lesson overview: In this lesson students will explore ‘good’ main characters in fairytales. The
students will add the ‘Main characters’ onto the word wall. The teacher will display the PowerPoint
‘Main characters’ and will ask question throughout the presentation. Students will create a ‘Missing
character’ poster for a main character we have studied. The students will use adjectives to describe
their appearance and personality and will illustrate a picture of the character representing the
adjectives.

Know:
Most Fairy tales have a good main character.

Main characters are in important part of a narrative as the story is based around them and they
encounter conflict.

Understand:
When writing a main character, it is important to include their personality and appearance.

The teacher will then prompt students to consider the ‘Good’ character types in fairy
personality and appearance of the main characters from tales. During the lesson and
closely studied fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood throughout the unit, students
and Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk. will have a list of main fairy
tale characters to refer to.
When discussing common main characters, the teacher
will ask students to place names onto the word wall.
Characters include ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and
‘Cinderella.’

DIFFERENTIATION CONSIDERATIONS
Modelling- Whilst sitting on the floor I will model the task to the students and show them my
example. The children will have their sheets in front of them and will discuss each box
Share Ideas- Whilst we are discussing the worksheet, I will ask students to share what character
they plan to do their missing poster on. The student will then share ideas thus embedding the task
and further examples to other students.
Poster Template: Having a premade template for the class will help students understand what
information needs to be included and how to display the information. Some students may have the
option to extend their knowledge of the character by providing a ‘What happened’ section.

ASSESSMENT
Formative-
Posters- The missing poster will demonstrate student’s knowledge about ‘good’ man characters
and the adjectives used to describe them. Students will also use the ‘Suspects’ and ‘Last seen’
sections to demonstrate their knowledge about the sequence of the story and the bad character.

What happened:
At a young age Princess Rapunzel was taken by her family by an evil
witch. Over the years, numerous people have reported seeing a
large tower in the forest with the missing Rapunzel inside. Some

have even reported a witch to climb the tower using her hair.
Everyone could not find the tower again.
