Assignment - Noli Me Tangere

1. Identify at least five (5) social problems in the Philippines today.

- The five social problems in the Philippines today are:
1. Corruption
2. Unemployment
3. Lack of access to Healthcare
4. Inflation
5. Crime

2. Rank them according to what you believe our government must address and solve first.
1. Corruption
- Among all the social problems the Philippines is facing today, I
believe that corruption is the number one priority that our
government must address and solve first. A corrupt government
can affect the state of the country which is why many Filipinos are
suffering. As a result, this can lead to unemployment, lack of
access to health care, high inflation and crime rates. Corruption can
be prevented if our government officials are honest and transparent
regarding the disclosure of budget information which prevents
waste and illegal use of resources. Moreover, Filipinos should be
educated enough to vote for qualified candidates who are
deserving to run the government. Therefore, I believe that effective
law enforcement should be implemented in order to ensure that
corrupt government officials are brought to justice and to end the
cycle of impunity, or freedom from punishment or loss.
2. Unemployment
- Unemployment rates are very high in the Philippines especially
during the pandemic. One of the main reasons is that there is a lack
of available job opportunities. Having a lack of available
good-paying jobs in the Philippines is one of the reasons many
Filipinos decide to work abroad and become Overseas Filipino
workers (OFWs). If there is a low unemployment rate, Filipinos
will most likely consider to work and stay here in the Philippines
which can improve efficient use of equipment and resources,
which is beneficial to companies and the overall economy.
3. Lack of access to Healthcare
- Access to healthcare is a basic human right regardless of one’s
social status. In the Philippines, there is a shortage of doctors in the
public sector which causes difficulties for some patients to look for
doctors available in the event of a medical emergency. Despite the
fact that basic medical care is provided all throughout the country,
some hospitals only offer limited treatments, making it difficult for
everyone to access them. In addition, having access to healthcare
significantly affects the poor due to the incompetency of the
government to provide programs or health insurances for them due
to the never ending corruption within the system.
4. Inflation
- Inflation is also one of the country's leading problems, resulting in
a decrease in the amount of money and a corresponding increase in
its value. In addition, inflation occurs when the amount of money
grows or when the demand for goods and services exceeds the
available supply. As a result, prices and the rate of poverty
increase. Poverty is the inability to afford basic necessities due to a
lack of financial means. In other words, as the cost of basic needs
necessities rises, so does the amount of financial resources needed
to afford them.
5. Crime
- In the Philippines, there is a high rate of violent crime, particularly
in Manila. Incidents of kidnapping, ATM card skimming,
pickpockets, the use of illegal drugs, gun violence, and such are
increasing each day. I believe that economic factors such as lack of
education, unemployment, and poverty lead to the increase of
criminal activities. Moreover, I believe that corruption of the
politicians also caused these crimes to occur because of their lack
to serve and provide for Filipino citizens. With this, the
government should offer more job opportunities. It is also
important to educate people and encourage them to practice moral
values. In addition, the government also needs to implement strict
and effective rules to possibly lower the crime rates in the country.
