Control system: The control system consists of vehicular control
and flow control in relation to a particular mode of

Control system: The control system consists of vehicular control

TRAFFIC SIGNALS
“Traffic signal operate by assigning the right of way
successively to intersection approaches”

• Indication: The red, yellow and green that is displayed is an


indication to driver.

• Cycle: The sequence of one complete sequence of signal


indication is called a cycle.

• Phase: the portion of cycle during which the movement with the
right of way do not change
TRAFFIC SIGNALS
Draw a four legged signalized intersection and draw all its
phases.
TYPES OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS
Pre-timed Signal:
• Repeat a preset constant cycle.

Actuated Signal:
 Respond to the presence of vehicles and pedestrians
 Need to use in conjunction with vehicle detectors
SIGNALS TIMINGS
“ Proper timing or duration given to all three indications is
called signal timings”

Signal timings depends on the following two main factors:


 Signal type

 Road type on which signal is installed


SIGNALS COORDINATION
“Signal coordination is the timing of the signals in relationship
to one another so that vehicles travelling at a predetermined speed
can pass through the greens of successive signals.”
