1 Scope

1.1 JDS 240.2 defines ordering information for steel wire reinforced rubber hose assemblies using
end connectors specified in John Deere standards to include: JDS 38.4, JDS 38.10, JDS 62.3, and
JDS 62.4; and all parts of SAE J516, ISO 12151 and ISO 6162 standards for use in hydraulic systems
using petroleum based hydraulic fluids with maximum working pressures of 1.7 MPa to 42 MPa. See
SAE J1754 2, Table 7 for hose operating temperature ranges and identification codes.

1.2 See JDS 240.1 and SAE J1754 1 standards for general specification, performance requirements
and uniform methods for testing and evaluation for hydraulic hose and hose assemblies.

Note 1 Thermoplastic type hydraulic hose (SAE 100R7, SAE 100R8 or equivalent), fabric hose (SAE 100R3 or
equivalent), and suction hose (SAE 100R4), are not covered by this specification. See JDS 240.3 for SAE J517 100R
type hose material not covered in JDS 240.1 and JDS 240.2 or any other non-standard type hose materials.

2 Requirements

Unless otherwise specified all hoses and connectors shall meet the requirements of SAE J1754 2,
clause 3.

2.1 Hose Assembly Identification


Hose assemblies shall be identified using SAE J1754 2 Table 1 to Table 7 and JDS 240.2X1.

2.2 Construction and Performance


2.2.1 Hose assemblies shall be qualified in accordance with the requirements in JDS 240.1 and
SAE J1754 1.

2.2.2 Users of this standard control the source of the Supplier Approved Preferred Material Matrix in
JDS 240.4.

Note 2 In JDS 240.2X2 drawing, the end sizes shall be filled in the blank space, due to the different end sizes in
each of the ISO 12151 standards for each letter code. Example: If a 12151 1 end connection with a
13/16 16 UN thread is used, the size and code would be 12 / H.

2.3 Cleanliness
2.3.1 JDS G169, Class 5.8 with maximum particle size of 0.8 mm (Code A, clause 2.4) is the minimum
requirement for hose assemblies unless otherwise specified. The internal surface area is defined as the
hose inside circumference times the hose assembly nominal centerline length including stem ends,
regardless of stem size or shape, and is defined with the following formula:

2.3.2 Rubber materials shall be discarded after test. They shall not be used for production.

2.4 Cleanliness Code


2.4.1 Hoses shall meet the following cleanliness level code: A, B or X in accordance with Table 1 when
specified on a drawing or in the Industry Standard Hose Number according to JDS-240.2.

The cleanliness requirement of JDS 240.2 above overrides the SAE J1754 2, Table 9, Cleanliness Requirements.

If an abrasive cut-off saw is used to cut the hose, the inside surface of both ends of the hose shall be mechanically
cleaned to loosen and remove debris. The cleaning depth into the hose shall be for a minimum depth equal to the
insertion depth of the hose fitting to be installed. Examples of mechanically cleaning include using a bottle brush and
an air blast or a foam projectile. Other methods may apply.

The cut-to-length hose cleanliness process shall be qualified on hose samples 250 mm long.

2.5 Hose Cover Type Codes


2.5.1 Table 2 lists the hose cover type coding to be used in the part identification number.

2.5.2 For comparative testing of materials the test method as defined in ISO 6945 shall be used unless
otherwise agreed upon between supplier and customer. The test results for Type 1 and Type 2 are to be
defined by the user and supplier. The test results for Type 3 covers are a maximum of 1 gram weight loss
after 300,000 ± 30,000 cycles.

2.5.3 A table that lists abrasion resistance equivalency for current suppliers is in JDS 240.2X1.

2.6 Part Identification Numbers and Descriptions


See JDS 240.2X1 for the format and description of part identification number coding.

3 Product Approval

3.1 The suppliers shall show that they have conducted tests which prove their product meets the
requirements of the specification.

3.2 The supplier shall provide upon request, parts for qualification tests at John Deere.

3.3 The purpose of the approved hose materials listed in the Supplier Hose Selection Matrix is to
eliminate calling out hose materials on hose assembly drawings unless otherwise specified on the
drawing.

3.4 The request to add, delete or revise a supplier hose material or a supplier to the Supplier Hose
Selection Matrix needs to be submitted via the Change Request form available on the JD Supply Network
(JDSN). The new hose material is to be reviewed by the Plumbing Technology Team from the Hydraulic
Core Technology Group (HCTG) before being approved and the change is made to Hose Selection
Matrix. The Enterprise Engineering Standards engineer responsible for hydraulics shall coordinate the
approval process. The revision should be recorded in the Hose Selection Matrix under the Revision
History tab stating the current material to new material, Class (A, B, or C), dash size, pressure rating,
hose cover type, and date. Suppliers should review the matrices annually and submit changes as
required.

Example 1 Supplier material from XXXX to XXXX, Class B, -12, 1000 PSI [6900 kPa], Cover Type 2,
and changed on 03OCT08.

3.5 The supplier quotes for hose assemblies should state the hose material per the approved
materials listed in the supplier Hose Selection Matrix, unless exceptions of another hose material is
specified on the drawing required for an application.

3.6 Material Substitution
Material substitution is allowable only with written engineering approval of the using unit. Hose within the
same duty classification or a hose with a higher pressure rating may be substituted for the specified
pressure rating. Physical dimensions and performance requirements of the hose material being replaced
shall be met. For Deere Internal use see JDS 240.4, Approved Supplier Hose Material Matrix and

The process to request a material substitution is described in JDS-G223, and the Change Request form
is available on the JD Supply Network (JDSN).

4 References

4.1 Access to John Deere Standards


4.1.1 John Deere Standards can be accessed by John Deere personnel via the Engineering Standards
internal website.

4.1.2 Employees of suppliers with an approved John Deere supplier number can obtain access to
John Deere Standards via the JD Supply Network (JDSN). Access to JDSN is by approved individual
name and password. Suppliers should contact their Supply Management representative with questions
about JDSN.

Note 4 Only John Deere Standards which have been approved for supplier distribution are available via JDSN.

4.2 Access to Standards from External Organizations


4.2.1 Most standards from organizations external to John Deere are available to John Deere personnel
via the Engineering Standards internal website.

4.2.2 Suppliers are responsible for obtaining relevant external standards. In accordance with copyright
laws and Company policy, John Deere personnel shall not provide copies of these standards to suppliers.
