B addy fox wanted to cut the trees

of Champakvan. He did not know
why, but he disliked the animals of
Champakvan and was always thinking of
new ways to harm them.

Just then he saw Blacky bear handing

“Blacky, what is happening in the forest?
Why is it decorated so beautifully? Is
there a wedding happening?”
“Don’t you know?” asked Blacky looking
at Baddy in surprise.
“No. That is why I am asking you,” said
Baddy, rolling his eyes.
“June 5 is Environment Day. We are
making these preparations to celebrate
that great festival in Champakvan,”
replied Blacky.
“Oh! So these decorations are for
Environment Day,” whispered Baddy
to himself.
“Did you say something?” asked Blacky.
“No, no! I didn’t,” muttered Baddy and
walked away.
At the Brave Hardy Crossing, the main
crossing of Champakvan, named after
one of its scientists, many animals had
gathered. They were discussing something
important amongst themselves. Baddy
wanted to know what they were talking
about, so he sat down quietly at one side
to listen to them.
“We should ask King Shersingh to be our
chief guest,” said Dola deer.
“But he is from our forest. How can
someone from our forest be the chief
guest? We should look for someone else,”
said Cheeku rabbit.

“You are right, Cheeku. If we get someone
from Sundarvan, it will be better. When
they see the environment celebrations, they
will go back and praise our forest in their
forest,” said Greta giraffe.
“Whom can we invite?” asked Cheeku and
scratched his head.
“How about Baddy fox?” suggested Dola.
“No! No! Baddy always wants to harm
Champakvan. How can we make him our

Suddenly, Cheeku caught sight of Baddy,
sitting behind a bush, quietly.
“Look! Baddy is here. Let us go and invite
him for the function,” he said excitedly.
All animals went to Baddy and invited
him to be their chief guest.
Baddy had been feeling uneasy listening
to the conversation, and now he was more
troubled. He could not even think how of
a fitting reply.
“I…I...,” he stammered and then said, ‘’I
will surely come.”

On his way back, Baddy started
wondering about what had happened.
“Here, I was thinking of harming
Champakvan and these animals are
inviting me to be their chief guest.”
On the day of the function, Baddy
came to Champakvan forest. He was
given a very warm welcome and
presented a garland of fresh flowers
and made to sit on the sofa
comfortably.
The animals of the forest put up skits
telling everyone the importance of trees
and why more trees should be planted.
They said in chorus,
“Fewer trees means heating of the
atmosphere,
less rain and homes will disappear.”

Baddy became thoughtful and realised he
would have done something horrible if he
had cut the trees. He decided that he would
never again harm the trees of any forest.
He would also stop the woodcutters from
cutting trees.
The function came to an end and the
animals requested Chief Guest Baddy to
address the gathering with a few words.
“I am very happy to be here and I
promise that from today, I will not harm
the trees in any way. I promise to plant
100 trees in Champakvan and look
after them.”
Hearing him, all the animals were very
happy. Baddy had truly been transformed

 Weighing the Donkey

on a picnic.

asked Mr Yadav, the science
teacher, asking his students who were out

Amar said, “Then let’s send Ramesh

is logical and you may be near its actual
weight, but who can tell me the exact
weight of the donkey?” asked Mr Yadav
Ramesh was waiting for a chance. He
quickly said, “Sir, I’ll tell you the exact
weight,” and winked at his friends. They
figured out he was up to some mischief.

“Come on to the field then,” said Mr
Yadav, asking them to follow him.

“N aughty, hurry up! Don’t
you have to go to school?”
Naughty mouse was sitting
on the showcase, when he heard his
mother. He climbed even higher.
Juhi mouse, his mother, called again,
“Naughty, where are you? It is getting
late for school. Have you worn your
uniform?” Naughty ignored this too. He
was busy trying to balance a glass figure
on one hand!
“This kid is so annoying. Let me get my
hands on him!” he heard ma say. Hearing
this, Naughty jumped down, and the glass
figure came down with a crash and broke
into pieces.
Ma rushed into the room and saw the

mess. She glared at Naughty and dragged
him into the bathroom to get him ready
for school.
Naughty was crying as ma got him ready
but she continued scolding him.
“How many times I have told you not
to fool around, but you never listen.
Someday, you’ll be sorry for your actions.
What if the glass had cut you today?
What if you had broken a bone when you
jumped off the showcase? Why can’t you
put your mind to studies? Your brother
studies so hard…”
Naughty did not want to listen. He was
angry. He thought, “Why does ma never
stop scolding me? She just doesn’t want
me to have any fun. Every day, she says,
go to school, wash your face, do your
homework, study, study, study. No TV, no
DVDs, no games! It’s boring. Only Sunny
bhaiyya makes her happy because he’s so
studious. He always has his nose stuck in
a book to impress ma.”
Naughty’s name suited him. He was always
up to some mischief, and was the cause of
worry for his family and neighbours.
He would jump on the sofa, the bed, the
showcase or through the windows. He
was never tired of jumping. He would
play games on ma’s phone, or on bhaiyya’s
tablet. Or he would continuously watch
cartoons on TV.
His favourite show was Tom and Jerry,
and he always thought of himself as Jerry
mouse. He was sure he could outwit cats
like Jerry did every time.
When ma scolded him for wasting time,
he would run to the neighbours’ houses
and do some mischief there. He would
ring their doorbells and run away.
The neighbourhood mice would
complain about him to his
mother, but she did not know
how to deal with Naughty.
She scolded him,
punished him, took
away the phone and
TV, but Naughty
never stopped.
One day, Sunny
came running into
the house, trembling
with fear.
“A group of cats has entered our area.
They are using clever traps with expensive
chocolates and toys to trap mice. We
should all be very careful!”
Ma was scared when she heard this.
“Sunny, please tell Naughty to be extra
careful from now on. I’ll go tell Papa.”
Juhi ran to the gate to greet Papa and told
him about the cats.
Papa looked worried. “Yes, I heard
someone talking about them but did
not realise the cats had come to our
neighbourhood. We must tell Sunny and
Naughty to be careful!”
Sunny explained about the cats, but
Naughty took it easy. He wanted to go
out and ride his cycle and play with his
friends. “Don’t go, Naughty,” said Sunny.
“It could be dangerous.”
Naughty would not listen. “I am not a
coward like you! And I’m not stupid. I
know how to handle cats.”
“You are very young right now. Don’t
be over-smart. Do as I say or I’ll
call ma...”
“Ya! Ya! Mummy’s boy.
Call anyone you want. I
am leaving.” Naughty
went down quickly
before anyone could
stop him.
Sunny started
shouting, “Ma...
Ma...Naughty is
going out to ride
his cycle alone.”

Ma shouted from inside, “Stop him! I’m
just coming!”
But by the time ma came out, Naughty
had left. He cycled quickly, and because
he wasn’t looking where he was going, he
went a little further from home.
Near an empty plot there was a big box
with rollers and swings and some fancy
chocolates inside! Naughty was very
happy to see that.
There were two other mice already playing
on the swings and rollers and gobbling the
chocolate, so Naughty ran to join them.
He put the cycle on its stand
and ran into the box. He
stuffed his mouth with two
chocolates and put some
more in his pocket for
later. Then he joined
the other mice on the
swings.
The three of them
were enjoying
themselves when they
heard a cat’s voice!

“Meow!”
“Run! There’s a cat!” shouted one of the
mice. But Naughty wasn’t listening. He
was having too much fun on the swings
and rollers.
“Don’t worry, I know how to handle
cats,” he said, imagining himself as the
brave Jerry Mouse. Naughty was showing
off on the swing when the cat came
up to the box. Three mice! The cat’s
mouth watered.
“This is a good day!” he exclaimed,
putting a paw into the box to pick up
a mouse.
Naughty tried to bite the paw, but the
cat swiped back and Naughty just
managed to escape. Naughty then tried
climbing up the swing to bite the cat
again, but the swing was on rollers and it
kept bringing him down. Naughty began
to feel scared now.
The cat, meanwhile, managed to catch
one of the other little mice. “Help! Help!”
they screamed. But there was nobody.
Naughty was petrified.
He remembered his mother and brother
telling him to be careful. All he could see
were the cat’s red eyes. What would Jerry
do? He could not think of a single thing.
He tried jumping out of the box, but the
rollers would not let him come out.
Naughty was beginning to cry when he
heard Sunny bhaiyya’s voice calling out.
“Naughty! Naughty! Where are you?”
Naughty ran to Sunny and hugged him,
crying. Sunny put him on the cycle and
wheeled him home, where ma was crying.
Naughty ran to her and hugged her.
“I’m sorry, ma. I will never be naughty
again. I will study and be a good mouse!”
Ma kissed him and smiled. Then Naughty
hugged Sunny bhaiyya again.

Sunny’s voice gave him some courage. He
stopped crying and again tried to climb
up. He realised Sunny bhaiyya and his
friends were looking for him.
Hearing the voices, the cat got startled
and lost his grip on the mouse he was
holding who fell down and ran into a
corner. The cat began moving away from
the box, wanting to see who was shouting.
“I promise I will listen to you, and never
tease you again!”
He then thanked bhaiyya’s friends. If they
had not come searching, Naughty and
the other mice would have been the cat’s
lunch. But bhaiyya and his friends had
saved the day

Naughty tried to call out to alert Sunny

and his friends that he was in the box, but
his voice did not go through. Meanwhile,
Sunny and his friends who were looking
around saw the big box. They ran to it
and saw the three mice inside.

“Don’t worry, Naughty!” called out

Sunny. “We’ll get you out!” raj bhagat

When the cat saw so many mice, he

ran away. The friends then studied
the box to see how they could
get the three little mice out. They
realised that if they tilted the box, it
opened.

Sunny and his friends put all their

strength and lifted one end of the
box to tilt it. The box opened and the
three mice came tumbling out!

C harlie monkey was a chatterbox.

Unlike the others in the forest, his
hobbies did not include painting,
drawing, sports, or music. Instead, he
loved to just keep talking.
“Don’t talk so much! Think before you
speak! If you keep talking unnecessarily,
you will get into trouble.”

But to no avail. Charlie hardly listened to

went. All he needed was a reason, and he
would start telling the whole story. His
parents and teachers were frustrated with
this habit. They tried explaining to him,
any advice.
One day, a few guests arrived at Charlie’s
house. His mom sent him to the market
to buy samosas and told him, “Come back
quickly! Don’t get distracted by talking!”

“All right!” said Charlie and left for
the market.
He placed his order and was waiting for
his turn when Jojo jackal, who was also
standing at the shop, noticed him and
said, “Hello! Are you Mukesh’s son?”
That was all the reason Charlie needed.
He said, “No, uncle! My father’s name is
Manohar, and mine is Charlie. I study in
fifth standard in Jungle Public School.”
Jojo said, “Oh, yes! I’m sorry! I know
your father, too. He’s a great guy! I want
to meet him.”
Charlie started again, “Of course,
uncle! My dad is a big businessman. The
shop ‘Jungle Electronics’ in the main
marketplace belongs to us. You can
buy the latest refrigerators, televisions,
washing machines and air conditioners in
our shop along with imported gadgets.
You have to go to the shop to make a
purchase, but you won’t be able to meet
my dad. He will be going out of town for
a few days, and the shop will be closed.”
Then Charlie remembered that there
were guests at home, and his mom was
waiting for him. He took the samosas and
rushed home, but the guests had already
left by then.
Mom was furious. She said, “There you
are! Why did you come back so late? Did
you find someone to talk to? Now, eat the
samosas yourself ! The guests have left!”
Charlie was apologetic and said, “But I
was not talking in vain, mom! I met an
uncle at the shop who knew dad and
wanted to meet him.” And he recounted
his conversation with Jojo uncle.

His dad got upset after listening to his
story. Charlie thought that his dad would
scold him. But his dad left the house at
once. Then Charlie went to his room,
thinking that the matter was over.
The next morning, when Charlie was
getting ready for school, the doorbell
rang. Charlie’s mom answered the door,
and Inspector Cheetah Singh was standing
outside. Two other policemen were
holding Jojo as a prisoner.
Seeing Jojo, Charlie said, “Oh! This is the
same uncle I met yesterday! He wanted to
meet dad!”
“He’s not your uncle! He’s a crook!
He collects information about big
businessmen and their whereabouts and
robs them after finding an opportunity.
We’ve been looking for him for a long
time. Finally, we caught him,” said the
inspector.

 The Secret Message

K ing Sinhraj of Paragvan

was a peace-loving lion. He
shared friendly relations
with all other neighbouring forests.
But Krur Singh, king of Nandanvan,
did not want to be friendly with
Paragvan. His army would often
attack vehicles carrying Paragvan’s
soldiers.
One day, Sinhraj called for a meeting
with the defence minister of his
forest, Hardy wolf, and said, “I
don’t understand how Krur Singh
gets information about our defence
secrets, like which vehicle is going
where and when and how to attack
them. I think someone from our
forest is giving them information.”
“Don’t worry, my king. I will find
out how Krur Singh comes to know
about the matters of our forest,”
Hardy assured Sinhraj.

Robbie rabbit was well-informed and

used to listen to the news daily. He
worked for the forest’s peace. He was
also a photographer and took many
beautiful photos of the animals and
birds in the forest.

One day, while following a beautiful

peacock, he reached the border between
Paragvan and Nandanvan. He was clicking
photos of it with his mobile when he
saw Nandanvan’s defence minister Dara
hippopotamus with Hardy. He was
amazed to see them both and wondered
what the two were talking about.
Hiding behind bushes, Robbie managed
to get close and started recording a video
of the two. Dara paid money to Hardy,
who said he would continue to share
information about Paragvan with Dara.
Robbie was shocked to see this. He knew
that King Sinhraj had immense faith in
Hardy and would not listen to a word
against him.
But now Robbie had proof that Hardy
was giving information to the defence
minister of Nandanvan.
Robbie started running to the palace to
show the video to King Sinhraj. But in his
hurry, he tripped over a rock and hurt one
of his legs. In spite of the sharp pain, he
got up and started running again, but the
noise had made Hardy look around and
spot him.
Robbie thought quickly. He removed the
SD card from his phone but did not know
where to hide it. He then remembered he
had a small box of biscuits in his pocket.
He emptied the box, put the card inside and
then buried the box under a tree. He then
started running again. But because of his
injured leg and the time he lost hiding the
SD card, Hardy soon caught up with him.
“Who are you? What were you doing at
the border?” Hardy asked sternly.
“I was taking a photo of the peacock,”
replied Robbie.
Hardy snatched Robbie’s mobile phone
and after looking in it he said, “There is
no photo of a peacock in this.”
“It flew away before I could click a
photo,” replied Robbie.
“Where is your phone’s SD card?” Hardy
asked.

“I had taken it out but forgot to put it
back in,” replied Robbie.
“You are lying and certainly hiding
something. Why else would you run?”
“A rabbit always runs to save his life
when he sees a wolf. I got scared when I
saw you.”
“I do feel like eating you but I think you
are hiding something and till I find out
what it is, I will keep you alive,” Hardy
said, and threw Robbie into a nearby cave.
“I will come back. If you want to live,
then you better tell me what you are
hiding,” he said and put a huge rock at
the mouth of the cave and left.
Robbie’s foot was hurting and he was very
hungry too. He remembered that while
emptying the box, he had put the biscuits
in his pocket.
He thought he would rest for a while and
then look for a way out of the cave.

As Robbie took out the biscuits from
his pocket and began to eat, a mouse,
smelling them, came there.
“Who are you and how did you get
here?” asked Robbie.
“I am Momo and I live in a hole here.”
“Will you have a biscuit?” offered
Robbie.
“Yes, they smell delicious, but you must
also be hungry,” said Momo, looking at
the biscuits greedily.
“Never mind, we both will share them,”
said Robbie and gave a biscuit to Momo.
“Is there a way out of this cave?” asked
Robbie, eating a biscuit.
“Of course, I go out every day,”
Momo said.
“But the cave’s mouth is closed.”
“That doesn’t matter. There are many
cracks for me to get out, but you will not
be able to go through them.”
“Will you convey a message to a friend of
mine? I wouldn’t have bothered you if it
wasn’t important.”
“I will certainly do that. Tell me the message
and who it is for, and I’ll deliver it.”
Robbie thought for a while and looked
around the cave. He saw a piece of wood
and picked it up. Then he looked for a
pointy stone and wrote ‘Three suns, lake,
tree’ on the piece of wood.
He gave Momo the address of his friend
Ricky raccoon and said, “You come back
as soon as you give this piece of wood to
Ricky and don’t tell him anything else.”
Momo quickly went to Ricky’s house and
said, “Your friend Robbie has sent this.”
Surprised, Ricky kept staring at the piece
of wood for some time.
“Three suns, lake, tree, what is this and
where is Robbie?” Ricky asked.
But Momo wasn’t there to answer his
question. He ran away as soon as he had
handed over the piece of wood to Ricky.
Ricky immediately called Robbie but
his phone was switched off. He started
thinking. He knew Robbie well and if he
had sent a message then it would certainly
mean something. He could be in danger.
Ricky read the message many times over.
He wondered why Robbie mentioned
three suns when there is only one.
could not sleep that night.
“I have to understand this message
anyhow. I wonder where Robbie is,” that
is all Ricky could think of.
But despite reading the message over and
over he could not understand it.
After a while he dozed off and slept till
late in the morning. His neighbour, Willy
weasel woke him up.
“What’s the matter, Ricky? It’s 9am and
the sun is shining on your head. Are you
alright?”
As soon as Ricky woke up, he
remembered Robbie’s message. Willy’s
statement made him wonder if Robbie’s
message meant 3 pm. He decided to visit
the lake at 3 pm.
“If ‘Three suns’ meant 3 pm, then what
do lake and tree mean?” he thought.

Unable to understand anything, he went

to the bank of the lake but didn’t notice

is giving information to our enemy. I
have to show this video to King Sinhraj
immediately,” he thought.
Without losing time, Ricky reached
the king’s palace and requested to see

your intelligence,” Robbie said.
The king was listening to the two friends.
“I am very pleased by the way which
you sent the message, Robbie and how
Ricky understood it and your love for
each other. Both of you are appointed as
advisors. But first, Robbie’s foot must be
treated,” the king ordered.
