CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In society, women have to face so many different adversities, some of

which are violence and inequality—sometimes rape, human trafficking,

unintended pregnancy, miscarriage, and even being physically assaulted and

socially discriminated against when women choose abortion. According to the

WHO, unsafe abortions are the third biggest cause of maternal deaths

globally, causing an extra five million mainly avoidable impairments. "Abortion

refers to the process of ending a fetus' conception in a pregnant woman's

womb by removing its tissues, membranes, and placenta." (medlineplus.gov).

It is a traditional practice that is recognized by authorities and cultures in many

parts of the world.

Abortion elicits conflicting views and has divided society into different

opinions and different sides. The reasons behind this difference are

complicated and may be explained by the fact that perceptions regarding

abortion are impacted by a variety of circumstances. "Notably, negative views

on abortion became more nuanced and tempered, especially among young

women in urban areas, as details of the factors that motivate women to seek

abortion became apparent." (Ushi B.A. et al.) studies show that most women

indicate that decisions regarding the termination of a pregnancy are mostly

taken by others, sometimes against their will. Parents, family members,

partners, and providers decide what should happen. Furthermore, many

cultures and religions across the world completely prohibit or restrict abortion,

and women who live in these conditions may face social discrimination or even

physical assault.

Abortion remains illegal in the Philippines under all circumstances, and

it is highly stigmatized. Thus, the government shows weak support for access

to modern contraceptives and in 2000, local bans on contraceptives, such as

the mayor of Manila’s executive order to remove contraceptives from public

clinics, In addition, the Philippines, as a religious country, forbids the use of

modern contraceptives and condemns abortion. There are also no explicit

exceptions to allow abortion in cases of rape, incest, or fetal impairment. Thus,

"The Penal Code considers abortion to be a criminal offense punishable by up

to six years in prison for doctors and midwives who perform abortions and by

2‒6 years in prison for women who undergo the procedure, regardless of the

reason. A separate set of laws under the Midwifery Act, Medical Act and

Pharmaceutical Act permits the revocation or suspension of the licenses of

any practitioner who performs abortions or provides abortifacients. "

(gutmatcher.org 2021).

Currently, among Sultan Kudarat State University College of Health

Sciences students, the word "abortion" is a controversial topic to discuss.

Although medical students believe abortion is a valid and acceptable topic, the

perception of students towards abortion differs in all circumstances.

Furthermore, this study aims to understand the perspective of Sultan Kudarat

State University's College of Health Sciences students on abortion.
