Membrane separation process are widely used in the industry mainly because the separation

process does not require heat to operate [2].The membrane is defined as a barrier that will
separates two different phases and selectively inhibits the transit of different substances [1].In this
membrane separation experiment, the Membrane Test Unit Model TR14 equipment had been used
to demonstrate varieties of techniques used in membrane separation. In the experiment, four (4)
different types of membrane silicone are studied, which undergo different driving forces such as
reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, and microfiltration. The second objective is to plot the
weight of the permeate against time. The permeate mass flux had been calculated which were 27.61
g/min for Membrane 1, 31.78 g/min for Membrane 2, 106.87 g/min for Membrane 3 and 455.26
g/min for Membrane 4. Within 10 minutes, Membrane 4 has the highest separation rate, followed
by Membrane 3, 2 and 1 sequentially. Higher permeate mass flux indicates more permeates
succeeded to separate from their solution. The experiment can be considered successful since the
aims of the experiment were satisfied despite the limitations occurred during the experiment being
conducted. μm
