Assessment 1. Read and analyze the situation, then complete the table below.

Situation:
One of our groupmate encountered this kind of experience on where social
workers distributes free vitamins to the residence in their Barangay (Lingap
Barangay). These vitamins are essential for the babies. Every time the social workers
gave it, some kids are begging them to have some. But sadly, those kids are just
playing with the vitamins even though the social workers are telling them not to play
with it. Because of that, the social workers felt inconvenience while doing their
work. Relating to the principle, just like what the social workers did (which is
distributing free vitamins) we can say that social work is really a service that can
give every individual a benefit or help and it leads to a better society. Yes, they are
still kids but this kind of experience can apply to everyone that we should respect
those social workers because they are not just doing their work for themselves but it
is for the whole community, the society rather.

A. Components of Communication Process

To understand the process of communication, you should be able to identify the

components of communication process. See the diagram below:

Noise

Sender Receiver

Message
Encoding Channel Decoding
Message Message

Message
Channel

Sender
Sender / Encoder is a person who sends the message. A sender makes use of symbols
(words, or graphic or visual aids ) to convey the message and produce the required response.
For instance, a training manager conducting training for new batch of employees. Sender may
be an individual or a group or an organization. The views, background, approach, competencies,
and knowledge of the sender have a great impact on the message

DISCIPLINE AND IDEAS IN THE APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCE Page 23

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL – HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

Encoding
Encoding isthe process where the information you would like to communicate gets transferred
into a form to be sent and decoded by the receiver.

Channel
Channels are the way you convey your message. These channels include verbal such as
telephone, and face –to-face conversations as well as non-verbal such as e-mail and text
messaging. Each individual channel has its strengths and weaknesses in terms of
communicating.
For instance, written medium is chosen when a message has to conveyed to a small group
of people, while an oral medium is chosen when spontaneous feedback is required from the
recipient as misunderstanding is cleared then and there.

Decoding
Decoding is on the receiving end of communication. This stage is just as important as
encoding. Communication can go downhill at this stage if the receiver is not practicing active
listening skills or if they do not possess enough information accurately decode the message.

Receiver
Receiver is a person for whom the message is intended or aimed. The degree to which the
decoder understands the message is dependent upon various factors such as knowledge of
recipient, their responsiveness to the message, and the reliance of encoder on decoder.

Feedback
Feedback is the main component of communication process as it permits the sender to
analyze the efficacy of the message. It helps the sender in confirming the correct interpretation
of message by the decoder. Feedback maybe verbal (through words) or non-verbal( in form of
smiles, sighs, etc). It may take written form also in form of memos, reports, etc.

The methods of communication involves the following:

Verbal Communication( i.e., sounds, language, and tone of voice);
Aural (i.e., listening and hearing) ;
Non-Verbal ( i.e., facialexpressions, body language, and posture );
Written (i.e.,letters, memos, journals, emails, blogs and text messages );
Visual ( i.e., signs, symbols, illustrations, and pictures)

Tools in communication include all we use in both communicating with others and
interpreting the information received from others. They range from language in all forms, from
tone of voice, to performing, re –enacting, television, storytelling telephone, cell phones, movie,
radio, photographs, cartoon, cyberspace, digital and social platforms, and the internet.

Processes and Methods of Communication in the different settings

1. Government Setting
In the government setting, the government communicates to inform the public about
national plans , public services, security situation, opportunities, and to give general direction to
people as a nation. In these sense, the government setting draws on a variety of communication
methods and tools depending on the subject and intent( Sampa, Ellias M 2015 ).

They have highly confidential information that it is meant to be accessible to all

members of the public information and propaganda. With the emergence of new media, the
government has also incorporated much of new technological tools. It is more common than
less to find even local government units maintaining a website and communicating with their
communities and general public using social media. For example, during the covid 19
pandemic, information dissemination, the number of covid positive cases in every town are
posted through social networking sites and informed through texts, in addition to traditional
radio and TV announcements(Sampa, Ellias M 2015 ).

2. Private Sector Setting

In the private sectors setting, communication for them is largely advertisement, to inform
the public, individuals, groups and communities about available goods and services for sale for
this sector exist for profit(Sampa, Ellias M 2015 ).

3. Private School Setting

Communication in school setting tends to be very formal and academic. However, the
emergence of new media has transformed communication in schools to include newforms of
communities cutting across schools to create communities of learners that come together in
pursuit of learning beyond the confines for physical schools they belong to.

There is more exchange of information and documents among students, and traditional
group work has become virtual teamwork, where students learn together and accomplish given
tasks without physically coming together.

It is very timely, that in this present scenario, schools can announce enrolment dates and
students can enroll in their chosen schools without even physically going off site.

4. Community Setting
In general, communication with communities has tended to favor one directional pattern
of mass media. Sectors of a community announce their offering to the wider community ;and
government agencies would also inform communities in this fashion regarding what they want
the community, individual-to -individual , group-to-group to general environment
communication. Various tools and methods are appropriately drawn to achieve community
setting communication goals. On this level, a face –to –face communication and tarpaulin as
well as graffiti are very common (Sampa, Ellias M 2015 ).

DIRECTION: Read the following text on the importance of newspaper in humankind. If there
are some unfamiliar words to you, you can consult your dictionary for the definitions.
Afterwards, copy and answer the guide questions in a separate sheet.

Newspaper is a powerful means to spread knowledge and important information to the

people. It increases the global connection between people and helps the people connect to each
other. Well, early in the morning we receive newspaper in our house and get the latest
information about various things happening in the world.

Newspaper is a reliable source of information as it only prints the news after proper
investigation. They are easily available in almost every region of the world and make people
aware of certain important things around them. It is an economical means to get knowledge at
a very low cost. Newspapers are available in different languages and thus it makes it easy for
the people to read and get information in their own language.

Diverse topics are discussed and printed on newspapers such as related to business,
sports, political, health, fitness and much more. Every column of the newspaper is reserved for
a particular domain and topic. We can find jobs on newspaper in the employment column. Then
there is a matrimonial column that helps people find their perfect match for marriages. Other
than this, there are editorial, readers and many other columns that provide vast variety of
information to the readers.

Newspapers are also a great means for advertising various kinds of products and
services. Many big companies and firms advertise through newspapers as it help them gain
popularity and huge client base. The newspaper firms earn a lot through these advertisements.
Well, there are various positive aspects of a newspaper, however there’s a negative side as
well. Sometimes the newspaper companies publish fake news for the sake of some bucks and to
provoke people for certain social issues which sometimes lead to fights and bloodshed. Hence,
it is important that we should read news that is completely true and should not take any
decisions pertaining to the news given in the paper.

What is it???
Applied social sciences, is the so-called human sciences. According to
Sampa (2017), applied social sciences are the purveyors of social justice, inclusion
and caregiving. It touches almost every aspect of a human life. Applied social
sciences is a commonplace. They are situated in children, adults, groups,
communities, civil societies, the judicial system, in the correctional facilities,
present in any setting, in any audience, practically in any endeavour, there you see
applied social sciences. Even in issues involving ethnicity or multiculturalism,
applied social sciences are still present.

Functions of Applied Social Science

Being the purveyors of social justice and the like, the following the so-called functions of
applied social sciences

1. Self- development and Applied Social Sciences

A. Counselling offers guidance to individuals in varying situations of conflict, confusion,
crisis and provides the tools for the individual to address issues of self- development.
B. Social work offers a wide range of services, particularly in aid of emancipating the
marginalized individuals and facilitating participation in the public goods and services
that are needed for self- development.
C. Communication empowers the individual with listening and speaking skills on order for
them to be effective.

DISCIPLINE AND IDEAS IN THE APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCE Page 32

2. Persuasion and Applied Social Sciences

At the heart of persuasion, one finds the ability to understand well one’s audience or the
people that the applied social science practitioner is dealing with. Since the applied social
science practitioner deals with people’s basic attitudes, values and beliefs about anything which
concerns life, he/she has to be concerned with how he/she could convince the audience to
acknowledge a particular point-of-view. Drawing on the skills of applied social sciences,
persuasion energized itself to move the audience to a desired action.

3. Art and Entertainment and Applied Social Sciences

• Art is a human creativity which involves the perceptions and imagination of an artist in
trying to communicate a recreation of reality and bringing it to the immediate perceptual
awareness.
• Art includes theater and drama, and it tells a story, and this brings color to the life of an
applied social science practitioner.
• Art and entertainment require active viewing with intellectual viewing, thus, with the
knowledge about applied social sciences, viewing would become more a part of one’s life
rather than just a diversionary activity. Through art and entertainment, we could see life
differently.
• Art and entertainment allow us to expand our experience, intensify our perceptions,
challenge conventional wisdom and norms, and introduce another frame of reference that
is conceptualized by the individual/ artist.
• Art and entertainment can provide nurturance and keep communities mentally and
socially healthy (particularly music, dance and theater).
• Art raise awareness about important issues drawing on the tools of applied social
sciences, particularly communication and journalism.
• Art brings humor in depressing and stressful moments, thus, making the people more
enduring of extreme forms of suffering and optimism.
• Arts provide collective resilience among the people and thus could bring the people in
unison.
• Art and entertainment industry offer a wide range of career opportunities from on stage to
behind the cameras, from the recording studio to the convention services and multimedia
companies, functioning as performers, artists and technicians.

4. News and information and Applied Social Sciences

The proliferation of news outlets, channels and purposes required increased ability for the
audience and participants in the news making and consumption.
The new media and social media provides the possibility of driving the democratization
of information by undercutting the agenda setting of large media outlets and their ability to
control the flow of news and information of driving the democratization of information by
undercutting the agenda setting of large media outlets and their ability to control the flow of
news and information. The society is informed just by simply reading, listening or watching.
Applied social science in this context can provide encouragement and empowerment to
underserved communities.

5. Organizing advocacy and Applied Social Science

Today, where freedom of speech is a common place organizing advocacy has a become a
contributory factor to social cohesion where individuals and groups find themselves having
parallel interests, convene to raise their issues to political platforms and try to find public
solutions through policies.

DISCIPLINE AND IDEAS IN THE APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCE Page 33

6. Education and Applied Social Sciences

Education as a process is a well-recognized global Framework and as a means of
socialization and enculturation. It is the process which improves knowledge and skills and it
brings about hope to make the world a better place to live in, where respect is a common place,
to ensure that the youth are guided towards a productive existence and for them to situate
themselves in the proper perspectives.
Education has played a big role in the reduction of poverty,
social exclusion, ignorance, oppression, and war, And, the best defense for every individual,
group and community is to at least have a good education for their empowerment and protection
from any threat to their humanity.

7. Socialization and Enculturation and Applied Social Sciences

Socialization is the process by which society turns an individual from being a child into a
full-fledged responsible adult or from being an outsider to an insider. This process is
accompanied by enculturation where the transformation of the individual or the group or the
communities presupposes the acquisition of a corresponding culture.
The skills learned in the applied social sciences can enrich both socialization and
enculturation.

Direction: Read the following news article authored by Merlina Hernando-Malipot and
published by the Manila Bulletin website about the possible enrollment drop in the Department
of Education due to Covid-1. Afterwards, complete the table below the news article to come up
with possible solutions using the various functions of applied social sciences.

DepEd sees 20% enrollment drop due to COVID-19

The Department of Education (DepEd) is projecting at least a 20-percent drop in
enrollment for the basic education level this year as Filipino families cope with the economic
impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A week after DepEd extended the enrollment period from June 1-30 until July 15,
national enrollment data as of July 7, showed that the total number of enrollees for School Year
(SY) 2020-2021 has reached 18,558, 639 nationwide for Kindergarten to Grade 12, including
Alternative Learning System (ALS) and non-graded learners with disabilities. Of this number,
17,671, 822 learners have enrolled in public schools and 866,935 registered in private schools.
Education Secretary Leonor Briones, in a recent online press conference, said that the DepEd is
not expecting to reach enrollment last year at 27 million. “Expected naman talaga namin, hindi
namin makuha yung 27 million kasi iba yung projection naming for this year (We expected that
we cannot reach the 27 million and we have set a different projection for this year),” she
explained.
Based on DepEd’s initial analysis of the enrollment, Briones noted that enrollment in
private schools is significantly lower compared to public schools and compared to last year’s
data. “Usually, numbers from private sector come in late because they have different opening
and enrollment schedules,” she explained.
Apart from the lag in data, Briones said that enrollment in private schools is also affected
by the economic collapse due to the impact of COVID-19. “Our economic planners already said
that we will have negative growth,” she added.
DepEd Undersecretary Jesus Mateo explained that since the income of families are
affected due to the slowing down of the economy, DepEd’s projection is that “only 80% of last
year’s enrolment” will register this SY.
Given this, Mateo said that DepEd has set an 80 percent enrollment target or about 22
million learners for both public and private schools. Compared to last year’s enrollment of 27
million, at least 20 percent or about five million children may choose not to enroll or stay out of
school this SY.

The different functions of applied social sciences, as you have learned earlier, would
bring about changes in the individual. For one, the applied social sciences practitioner would
have the opportunity to provide counselling, to another person, to help emancipate the clientele
of social work particularly the marginalized sector, and to be an effective communications
practitioner. Second, with persuasion, the applied social sciences practitioner is able to elicit
positive results of the counselling, social action program or the news casting from his/her
clientele or audience. Third, under the art and entertainment function, one would be able to
appreciate anything about life- the depression experienced by an individual, the marginalization
of the poor, or the beauty of writing, to name a few. Fourth, under the function news and
information, the clientele and audiences of applied social sciences would, regardless of the
gender, socio-economic status, physical characteristics, or beliefs, altogether benefit from what
written and broadcast media or social media would have to offer. Fifth, with organizing
advocacy as a function, the people could act in unison in promoting a certain philosophy or
belief. Another is with the function education, which could bring one to a realization that
through this one could become productive and a significant member of the community. Lastly,
with socialization and enculturation as functions of applied social sciences, one would become
adoptive and adaptive the culture of other people as a premise of socialization.

What is it???
The functions of applied social sciences would bring about changes in
the clientele and audiences of the applied social sciences- the individual, the
groups or the communities. In the individual, who is the base of the groups
and the communities, self-actualization could be achieved, socialization
skills could be enhanced, persuasion could be intensified, appreciation of the
arts and entertainment could be qualified, the ability to organize and
actualize an advocacy could be nurtured and the desire to be educated could
be harnessed.

In this learner material, we will situate those functions in the real time and real life scenarios,
Several instances will be cited and then you shall be required to tell stories of your own on how
you could relate to any one of such functions.

Self-development and Applied social sciences

This function of applied social sciences is necessary when and where one needs to
nurture the innate characteristics. On example is the need for one who is impassioned towards
helping other people, particularly the poor people to cultivate all the more such attachment.
Therefore, self-development would be actualized.

Fig.1. Sample image of self-development

Organizing Advocacy and Applied social sciences

This function would is required in scenarios where the individual needs to emphasize of a
certain belief or philosophy and needs the support of identified individuals of groups or even
the community for that matter. For example, with the health crisis we are in now, the World
Health Organization organized the advocacy “Stay home, save lives” (www.who.int) so as to
prevent the fast spread of the dreaded covid 19 and to save the medical front liners from being
infected.

Socialization and Enculturation and Applied Social Sciences

As members of the community, or the society, an individual needs to be transformed to

become a full-fledged significant adult member therein. A classic example would be your
instance of transforming from a nonchalant kid to a responsive and responsible young adult.
Children of five (5) cannot be five years old all throughout but has to grow physically, socially

processes on individuals, groups and society.
This module will guide you to learn social awareness, self-awareness,
and self-knowledge, attitude and value change, behavioral change and
structural change.

Effects of Applied Social Sciences Processes

Applied social sciences come with a wide range of practitioner skills in areas such as
advocacy, counseling and case management, and the knowledge and experience to be able to
work with individuals, groups, and communities to improve their well-being and social
functioning. Professionals here are eligible to apply for roles such as alcohol and drug worker,
caseworker, school counselors, client service officer, community social worker, contact
supervisor, and rehabilitation officer, among others. They can also fit well in all other sectors
requiring the application of psychological knowledge, including the human resource offices,
personnel, market research, community services, health and social welfare.

With the applied social sciences processes, standards in social service delivery are
observed. A set of core values is considered in the delivery of human and social services.
Services are given with quality. Social justice is pursued. Every person is considered to have
dignity and worth. The importance of human relationships is a factor in social service delivery.
Integrity and competence are expected of all professionals in the practice of social service. They
are expected to work within their areas of competence and to develop and enhance their
professional expertise. People in need are helped by social workers to address social problems.
Social injustice is challenge (Sampa, 2017).

1. Social Awareness, Self-awareness, and Self-knowledge

Social awareness, self-awareness, and self-knowledge are very essential for quality
participation and functioning in society for the incorporate one’s appreciation of both the inner-
ecology and social ecology. We become aware of who we are as individuals, because of the
presence of others with whom we share our existence. When we come to recognize that there
are other people and that they are essentially distinct and different from us, that is the start of
our social awareness that simultaneously leads us to become conscious and aware of ourselves
as beings or persons.
Social awareness is important for managing own response to change, and it forms an
essential part of interpersonal intelligence. For students, this involves recognizing others’
feelings and knowing how and when to assist others. It involves learning to show respect for
and understand others’ perspective and their emotional states and needs. It likewise involves
DISCIPLINE AND IDEAS IN THE APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCE Page 48
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL – HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

learning to participate in positive, safe, and respectful relationships, defining and accepting
individual and group roles and responsibilities. This become the foundation of student
understanding of their role in advocacy in society and to build their capacity to critique societal
construct and forms discrimination, such as racism and sexism. Social awareness capacities
individuals to appreciate diverse perspectives, contribute to civil society, and understand
relationships.

Self-awareness is an important step toward self-understanding and self-mastery and it

forms an essential part of intrapersonal and emotional intelligence. It means having the capacity
to understand your personality, behaviors, habits, and emotions. It includes being conscious of
what you are good at (strengths) as well as of what you are not good at (weaknesses). As a
student, it also involves identifying and describing the factors that influence your emotional
responses as well as develop a realistic sense of your abilities, qualities and strengths. This is
done through knowing what you are feeling in the moment, and having a realistic assessment of
your own abilities resulting in a well-grounded sense of self-knowledge and self-confidence. It
involves reflecting on and evaluating your learning, identifying personal characteristics that
contribute to or limit your effectiveness, learning from successes or failures, and being able to
interpret your own emotional states, needs, and perspectives. A self-aware individual act with
personal and social capability through recognition of emotions, recognition of personal qualities
and achievements, understanding oneself as learner, and developing a reflective practice.

2. Attitude and Value Change

Tensions emanating from technological, social and economic change bring about attitude
and value change. With all changes happening especially in the climate change context, social
and cultural values that may not be in support of survival need to give way to those that are life
nurturing. Two frameworks for climate change resiliency suggested ask either for mitigation
strategies or adaptation strategies to ensure human survival and prosperity.
Relying only on disaster risk reduction and effective management of climate change is not
adequate; there is a need to have attitudinal and value transformation on negative inclinations
like the “bahala na” attitude; these cannot lead to individual, group, or community stability. Our
attitudes and values must change with time, so as to allow our new abilities to survive to
emerge. Our must changes with time, so as to allow our new abilities to survive to emerge. Our
lifestyles are as good as they are sustainable and supported by our life means.

3. Behavioral Change
Behavior is acquired or developed slowly and once it’s part of your life, you will learn
the difficulty of behavioral change. It is hard to break old habits or adopt new ones. Making a
permanent change in behavior is never a simple process, and it requires a substantial
commitment of time, effort, and emotion (Sampa, 2017). Sometimes, one has to make several
tries before succeeding. Achieving behavioral change demands multiple solutions and even
several different techniques. Often, in the process of trying to change, many people become less
motivated, discouraged, and give up on their goals to change their behaviors. Generally,
behavioral change is highly transactional. The motivation is sustained by cost analysis. If
change is perceived to bring immediate gratification with good benefits compared to the change
management is never easy, but psychologist, therapists, physicians, and teachers have
developed a number of ways to effectively help people change their behaviors.

Research has produced theories to explain how to change occurs. In the late 1970s,
researchers James Prochaska and Carlo DiClemente were studying ways to help people quit
smoking and ended up developing one of the best known approaches to change, called the
Stages of Change model or The Transtheoretical Model (TTM). This model demonstrates that
change is not easy and requires a gradual progression of small steps toward a larger goal. The

DISCIPLINE AND IDEAS IN THE APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCE Page 49

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL – HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

model has been found to be an effective aid in understanding how people go through change in
behavior:
(1) readiness to change;
(2) barriers to change; and
(3) expect relapse.

One needs to have resources to aid change. These may include both economic and social
capital, a support network, and an enabling environment. Change happens in a gradual way.
Relapses are considered an inevitable part of the change process in achieving a lifelong change.
Unwillingness and resistance to change are very normal during the early stages. In the process,
one becomes accustomed to the process and increases the commitment to achieving the
behavioral change goals.

Self-change can be hard and so is changing others. Individual behavior and collective
behavior all need to change if the behavior in question is not positive. Applied social sciences
bring in a wealth of approaches, techniques, and tools to facilitate change on the individual level
and on the group level.

Behavioral change has been rightly associated with the role of the applied social sciences
processes. There is more discourse on power and corruption, conflict management and peace
building process, and risk assessment behavior. The media have made issues of power and
corruption to become a public matter leading to arrests and detention and trials of powerful
political individual like the three Philippine senators who were tried for plunder cases in 2014
(Former Senate President, Sen. Ponce Enrile, former Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Jinggoy
Estrada, and Sen. Bong Revilla).

The practice and insights from social work and counselling are influencing progress in
conflict management and peace building in Mindanao and across society. Counselors and social
workers are more and more impacting public response to risk assessment behavior on
individual, group, and community levels. The campaign against the spread of HIV and
prevention as well as care for the afflicted is largely due to the input from applied social
sciences and the work of the professionals in the practice.

4. Structural Change
Structural change refers to the radical shift in the way reality is organized and does not
necessarily include the substantive change. Structural change, in economic terms, is the
transformation of policy, legal, social, cultural, economic, and/or physical aspects of an
environment that impede equity for all. As such, it requires long-term interventions that build
on knowledge, behavior, and attitude modification across multiple domains: public and private
institutions, civil society, community groups, and in the general population. Normally, this is
only realizable when there are transformation dominant sectors that help to remove barriers to
equity for all in every opportunity area such as health and safety, education, employment,
housing, and income and wealth. The complexity of issues may require starting in one
institution and breeding to another institution as well as long-term close monitoring of public
policies.

In many countries, women were not allowed to hold public office and they were made to
look incompetent using a social structure, for example, that prevented them to go further in
education or have exposure to public service. Systematically, their exposure was in the kitchen
and domestic context. To change this, there are global efforts from public policy to social
awareness campaign and education where organizations and companies are required to have
women representation in workplace and public affairs. In the recent past, the family structure
did not just describe the biological and marital relationship that bonded people together but it
DISCIPLINE AND IDEAS IN THE APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCE Page 50
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL – HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

included the aspects of living together under the same roof or very close proximity. Today, the
concept of family remains to be the basic unit of human relations but does not necessarily imply
living together. Furthermore, the institution of marriage was confined to opposite sex partners
but today, there is a growing acceptance of same-sex unions and marriages across the globe.

Evidently, personal and family relations, gender, overseas migration of Filipino workers,
domestic violence, single parenting, community life, criminality and substance abuse are not
only changing in structure; they are also becoming more common and normal. Applied social
sciences are facilitating much of people’s struggle to live with these changes. Social work,
counselling, and communication are making common issues more of a public discourse leading
to greater acceptance and better understanding and coping on individual, group and community
levels. Social science concepts and theories have provided the foundation and tools to deal with
changes in a more comprehensive way.

6. Synthesis of the Effects of Applied Social Sciences

Social sciences, in their broadness, provide a huge theoretical resource to explain much
of the social phenomena that affect individuals, families, groups, and communities. Applied
sciences raise the social science to a practical science to address personal, family, group and
community problems by helping individuals develop their capacity to fit well in the
environment and by challenging the environment to become better for individuals to flourish.
Guidance and counseling, social work, and communication and journalism provide the
mechanism, tools methods, and processes to bridge the individual and his/her community.

Applied social sciences are rooted in the principles of human rights, social justice, and
inclusion as well as empowering individuals, groups, and communities to develop their full
potential and well-being. When these are not realized, denied, or violated, then applied social
sciences set in with appropriate measures to transform humanity.

What is it???
Effects of Applied Social Sciences
The applied social sciences have different effects on various sectors of
society. The use of the different theories, and methodologies from the social
sciences provide benefits to individuals, groups, and the society. The benefits
derived from the applied social sciences produce numerous effects to individual
members, communities, and groups and in the society in general. The effects of the
applied social sciences vary and they include increased awareness and knowledge
of oneself and others, attitude and value change, behavioural changes and
structural changes(Sampa, 2017).

Meanwhile, Melegrito (2016) conveyed that applied social science come with a wide range of
practitioner skill in areas such as advocacy, counselling and case management, and knowledge
and experience to be able to work with individuals, groups, and communities to improve their
well-being and social functioning. Professionals here are eligible to apply roles such as alcohol
and drug worker, caseworker, school counselors, client service officer, community also fit well
in all other sectors requiring the application of psychological knowledge, including the human
resource offices, personnel, market research, community services, health and social welfare.

He added that with the applied social sciences processes, standards in social service delivery are
observed. A set of core values is considered in the delivery of human and social services.
Services are given with quality. Social justice is pursued. Every person is considered to have the

DISCIPLINE AND IDEAS IN THE APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCE Page 60

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL – HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

Social Awareness, Self-awareness, and Self-knowledge

Through the applied social sciences, people have developed ways to understand one’s self and
the other people around. Counselling, for example, allows us to understand one’s personality
including various problems and issues that may affect an individual. The applied social sciences
also allows us to understand better and probe deeper into the different problems and issues
affecting an individual, group, and society through social work. Social work, for example,
provides awareness and understanding of community organizing issue and mobilization. They
also inform communities about the important political, social, and economic issue that is
affecting them. Trainings conducted by social workers on community capacity building provide
members with successful strategies and skills for personal and community development. The
applied social sciences, particularly communication helped people to become more discerning
about the problems of country. Television, radio and newspaper provide people information on the
different issues faced by the country. Through media, people also became more aware of social
realities.

Attitude and Value Change

The applied social science allows us to understand various social phenomena and because of
this, people can make significant changes in their attitudes to prevent the occurrence of various
natural and social problems. For example, risks of disasters can be prevented and mitigated
through the use of the applied social sciences because it can provide us information on what to
do when disasters happen in a community. Community social workers provide people with
information that can help them to make important attitude and value changes so that the impact
of disasters can be reduced.

For example, the impact of climate changes to society and its overarching effects on our country
has become clearer and can easily be understood through the information communication to us
by media. Disasters, climate change, and its other adverse effects are now clear to society
because it has been effectively discussed and communicated in different forms of media like,
television, radio, and social media. Applied social scientists can communicate to the people
impact of these social environmental phenomena through their understanding of the interaction
of society, culture and environmental. Because of our knowledge of climate change, people
have developed a new perspective and change of attitudes and values about the importance of
climate change.

For example, social workers provide people affected by disaster training on how to become
vulnerable to hazards on what they should do before, during and after a disaster. These trainings
and programs that were done and implemented by applied social sciences practitioners changed
the people’s attitude, values, and ideas towards disaster. Through the help of social workers,
people affected by disaster become more resilient and prepared in times of disaster.
Tensions emanating from technological, social, and economic change bring about attitude and
value change. With all changes happening especially in the climate change context, social and
cultural values that may not be in support of survival need to give way to those that are life
nurturing. Two frameworks for climate change resiliency suggested as either for mitigation
strategies or adaptation strategies to ensure human survival and prosperity.

Relying only on disaster risk reduction and effective management of climate change is not
adequate; there is a need to have attitudinal and value transformation on negative inclinations
like the “bahala na” attitude; these cannot lead to individual, group, or community
sustainability. Our attitudes and values must change with time, so as to allow our new abilities
to survive to emerge. Our lifestyles are as good as they are sustainable and supported by our life
means.

Behavioral Change
Behavior is acquired or developed slowly and once it’s part of your life, you will learn the
difficulty of behavioural change. It is hard to break old habits or adopt new ones. Making a
permanent change in behaviour is never a simple process, and it requires a substantial
commitment of time, effort, and emotion. Sometimes, one has to make several tries before
succeeding. Achieving behavioural change demands multiple solutions and even several
different techniques. Often, in the process of trying to change, many people become less
motivated, discouraged, and give up on their goals to change their behaviours. Generally,
behavioural change is highly transactional. The motivation is sustain by cost analysis. If change
is perceived to bring immediate gratification with good benefits compared to the status quo, the
behavioural change process trends to be sustainable. Behavioral change management is never
easy, but psychologists, therapists, physicians, and teachers have developed a number of ways
to effectively help people change their behaviours. Self-change can be hard and so is changing
others. Individual behaviour and collective behaviour all need to change if the behaviour in
question is not positive. Applied social sciences bring in a wealth of approaches, techniques,
and tools to facilitate change on the individual level and on the group level.

Behavioral change has been rightly associated with the role of the applied social science
processes. There is more discourse on power and corruption, conflict management and peace
building process, and risk assessment behaviour. The media have made issues of power and
corruption to become a public matter leading to arrests and detention and trials of powerful
political individual like the three Philippine senators who were tried for plunder cases in 2014 (
Former Senate President, Sen. Ponce Enrile, Former Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Jinggoy
Estrada, and Sen. Bong Revilla).

The practice and insights form social work and counselling are influencing progress in conflict
management and peace building in Mindanao and across response to risk management
behaviour on individual, group, and community levels. The campaign against the spread of HIV
and prevention as well as care for the affected is largely due to the input from applied social
sciences and the work of the professionals in the practice.

The applied social sciences also introduced us to the different political problems and issues
confronting our country today. It also provided to us solutions oh how to address these political
and social problems. For example, the broadcast communication can provide us information on
the issues of corruption and political problems that affect us today. Through effective
communication strategies and political and social mechanisms, the applied social sciences
practitioners can help in the peace talk process and in conflict resolutions and negotiations to
achieve long lasting peace in a particular area or country. Social workers play vital roles in
peace negotiations and resolution of political tensions and violence through the application of
peace building processes and conflict management mechanisms.

Through risk assessment behaviour, the prevention of a difficult situation from escalating into
violence can be achieved. Risk assessment behaviour experts assess warning signs and potential
threats the propose possible strategies in response to acts of coercion or threats of violence.

Structural Change
Structural change refers to the radical shift in the way reality is organized and does not
necessarily include the substantive change. Structural change, in economic terms, is the
transformation of policy, legal, social, cultural, economic, and/or physical aspects of an
environment that impede equity for all. As such, it requires long-term interventions that build
on knowledge, behaviour, and attitude modification across multiple domains: public and private
institutions, civil society, community groups, and in the general population. Normally, this is
only realizable when there is transportation in dominant sectors that help to remove barriers to
equity for all in every opportunity area such as health and safety, education, employment,
housing, and income and wealth. The complexity of issues may require starting in on e
institution and breeding to another institution as well as long-term close monitoring of public
policies. In many countries, women were not allowed to hold public office and they were made
to look incompetent using a social structure, for example, that prevented them to go further in
education or have exposure to public service. Systematically, their exposure was in the kitchen
and domestic context. To change this, there are global efforts from public policy to social
awareness campaign and education where organizations and companies are required to have
women representation in workplace and public affairs.

In the recent past, the family structure did not just describe the biological and martial
relationships that bonded people together but it included the aspects of living together under the
same roof or very close proximity. Today, the concepts of family remain to be the basic unit of
human relations but does not necessarily imply living together. Furthermore, the institution of
marriage was confined to opposite sex partners but today, there is a growing acceptance of
same-sex unions and marriages across the globe.

Evidently, personal and family relations, gender, overseas migration of Filipino workers,
domestic violence, single parenting, community life, criminality, and substance abuse are not
only changing in structure; they are also becoming more common and normal. Applied social
sciences are facilitating much of people’s struggle to live these changes. Sociual work,
counselling and communication are making common issues more of a public discourse leading
to greater acceptance and better understanding and coping on individual, group, community
levels. Social science concepts and theories have provided the foundation and tools to deal with
changes in a more comprehensive way.

The applied social sciences allowed us to understand the intricacies of the different structural
problems and how it changes through time. The applied social sciences can help us to
comprehend the different social problems and its dynamics, and in the process the applied
social sciences provided us with the necessary tools and skills to propose alternative solutions.
Some of these problems that the applied social sciences can address include various social and
family – related problems like gender issues, overseas migration of overseas Filipino workers,
domestic violence single parenting, criminality and substance abuse. This can be done through
the help of social workers, community organizers, and counsellors who are willing to help
individual and group members of society by providing them with alternative solutions, advice,
guidance, and information on what they should do and how they should act to address the
problems.

Synthesis of the Effects of Applied Social Science

Social science, in their broadness, provide a huge theoretical resource to explain much of the
social phenomena that affect individuals, families, groups, and communities. Applied sciences
raise the social science to a practical science to address personal, family, group, and community
problems by helping individuals develop their capacity to fit well in the environment and by
challenging the environment to become better for individuals to flourish. Guidance and
counselling, social work, and communication and journalism provide the mechanism, tools,
methods, and processes to bridge the individual and his/her community. Applied social sciences
are rooted in the principles of human rights, social justice, and inclusions as well as
empowering individuals, groups, and communities to develop their full potential and well
being. When these are not realized, denied, or violated, then applied social science set in with
appropriate measures to transform humanity.

A portfolio could be a selection of a student's work (such as papers and tests) compiled over a
period of your time and used for assessing performance or progress (Merriam Webster). A
process wherein the learners are visiting select their best outputs to be placed in their portfolio.
Portfolios encourage teachers and schools to specialize in important student outcomes, provide
parents and also the community with credible evidence of student achievement, and inform
policy and practice at every level of the academic system. It provides insight into learner’s
personality and work ethics.

In addition, a portfolio could also be a folder containing a student’s best pieces and therefore the
student evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the activities. Portfolios are often record
of the activities undertaken overtime within the development of written product (Cooper 1993,
et.al).

From the previous lessons, you're finished the results of applied social sciences
processes, which are a specific program or projects on knowledge, attitude, and behavior of
people, groups, and society. This module will provide you with information and activities that
may facilitate you’re the way to make a portfolio.

LEARNING ACTIVITY 7.1

Read Me! Analyze Me!

Name: __________________________________ Date: _______________

Activity 1:
Direction: Read the portfolio description. Understand carefully the important
keywords within the given statement.

Portfolios are compilation of student work representing the evidence of their output and
assessing the performance of scholars (Wiggins, G. P., 1993). it's going to also contain the
accomplishment of the educational work that illustrate the creation of a product, like activities
(group and individual) and performance task.

Compilation is the act or processing of compiling or the act of gathering output contains the
accomplishment over a period of your time.

Features and Principles of Portfolio Assessment

1. A portfolio may be a sort of assessment that students do along with their teachers.

2. A portfolio represents a range of what the scholars believe are best included from among the
possible collection of things associated with the concept being studied.

3. A portfolio provides samples of the students’ work which show growth overtime.

4. The teacher will make rubrics on the way to assess the portfolio. The assessment tool must be
presented to the academic as basis in accomplishing the task.

What should be included within the learner portfolios?

• Statement of originality: A paragraph stating that this can be your work which its
original made by the learners.

Writing samples including plans/activities

• Open-ended tasks like students self-reflection - it's a component of the learners portfolio
where they'll put their learning’s/insights about the topics they studied. It will showcase
the learners additional knowledge and skills acquired from the previous lesson.

• Documentary pictures

• The factors for choosing and assessing the portfolio contents must be clear to the teacher
and also the students at the outset of the method.

What is it???
What are Portfolios?

Other descriptions and definitions that describe the said term are
the following:

• Portfolios as devices that involved students in critical thinking and realistic

performance tasks, as strategies for empowering students to require responsibility
for his or her own learning, and as tool for assessing a spread of skills not normally
testable in a very single setting for traditional testing.

• A portfolio gave our students choices and provides a profile learner’s abilities
regarding depth, breadth growth and enabled them to possess an opinion within the
evaluation process.

• Properly structured and monitored, portfolio assessment could also help us

incorporate coherence and ongoing feedback into our program evaluation.

• Includes student participation within the selection and student self-reflection,

develops awareness of a student own learning and develop social skills.

• “A collection of artifacts in the course of a reflective narrative that not only helps
the learner to know and extend learning, but invites the reader of the portfolio to
realize insight about learning, and also the learner” (Porter & Cleland, 1995).

Stages in Implementing Portfolio Assessment

Asturias (1994) and De Fina (1992) suggested stages on implementing portfolio assessment.

These are the following:

Stage 1: Identifying teaching goals to assess through portfolio.

It is important to present the clear instruction of the teacher on what to attain in teaching
within the assessment of the learners/student’s work for the portfolio.

Stage 2: Introducing the thought of portfolio assessment to your class.

Portfolio assessment should be introduced by the teacher like what are the concepts/ideas
to the category in making/compiling portfolio.

Stage 3: Specification of Portfolio Content.

It should specify what are the contents to be included in the portfolio and the way it will
be assessed.

Stage 4: Giving clear and detailed guidelines for portfolio presentation.

The teacher gives a transparent instruction and detailed guidelines on how the portfolio is
presented.

DISCIPLINE AND IDEAS IN THE APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCE Page 72

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL – HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

Stage 5: Informing key school officials, parents and other stakeholder.

It is important to inform the school officials, parents and other stakeholders about the use
of portfolio assessment method.

Stage 6: Development of the portfolio.

Guide the learners on how to accomplish their portfolios.

Types of Portfolios

1. Documentation Portfolio
- To highlight the development and improvement of student learning during a given
period of time. It often contains a range of artifacts from brainstormed lists to rough
drafts to finished products.
- The compilation of the output of the students that they gather in their activities over a
period of time.

2. Process Portfolio
- Similar to documentation portfolio, in which it contains all the evidences required to
prove the learning outcomes in the given time, in addition, it integrates reflection and
higher-order cognitive activities. It emphasizes metacognitive functioning and
encourages students to become active participants in understanding their own learning.
- The method portfolio could be a learning process of the scholars to push their own
reflection on what they need to learn and reflect on how each part determine the progress
toward their goals.

3. Showcase Portfolio
- Designed to display a learner's highest quality of work. This can be to spotlight student
success, or to showcase a spread of accomplishments a student has achieved over a
period of time. In showcasing a student’s work, this portfolio allows them to explain and
tell their story.
- It shows creativity of the learners in their outputs and products.

The following describes just one possible way to get start:

Step 1.
Select two pieces of your work over the course of a quarter. Decide with your teacher
upon one or more criteria by which the selection will be graded (e.g., best work from their
performance task). To manage time, don't wait for the end of the quarter for you to make those
selections. Otherwise, all your work will have to be collected along the way. Instead, keep the
selected two or more pieces matching certain criteria for you to be marked complete.

Step 2.
At this time, select a sample to be included in portfolio to finish a quick reflection sheet
and fasten it to the sample.

Step 3.
Depending on the age, save the sample and attach a reflection sheet until the end of the
quarter or semester, and then collect it.

Step 4.
At the end of the quarter or semester, reflect on the samples for the last time by
describing what best activity in their work to identify strengths and weaknesses using the rubric

LEARNING ACTIVITY 7.5

Grade/Section: ___________________________

Great job! You accomplished the module. Congratulations!

Direction: Complete the paragraph. Use a separate sheet for your answers.

In accomplishing my portfolio, I learned a lot of things like _______________,

______________, ________________, and ____________________I found out that
completing a portfolio is not an easy task. And with that I was able to develop my skills in
_______________, _________________, _________________ and
______________________.
Indeed, one great accomplishment as a SHS student is to perfectly complete the task assigned
by the teacher especially following the assessment tool as agreed upon by the teacher and
student.
With that, I found out that portfolio assessment has to consider many elements like
__________________, _________________, _________________, _______________ and
_______________________.

Therefore, I can say that the portfolio I made was very useful in my study of HUMSS.
