Subject: Favorite Character of the Movie “UP” and Characteristic of the Character and Learning

Up is delightful, with lovely characters embarking on a traditional hero's quest in a lavishly

rendered setting. But the plot is what really grabs my attention, as it usually does with a Pixar
film. The movie's co-director and screenwriter Bob Peterson, who also wrote the script, makes
superb use of the main character archetypes.

My favourite Character is Russell.

The deuteragonist of Up is Russell. He also made another supporting character appearance in

Dug's Special Mission and a different minor character appearance in George & A.J.

Russell initially appears to us as he stands on Carl's front porch stairs. Carl has previously
demonstrated how the years after Ellie's passing have made him a hardened, furious, and bitter
old man (while this is about Russell, I have a hypothesis that Carl's harsh jaw lines and edges are
portrayed to underline how stiff and frigid he is on the inside). Russell is first shown to us as
being a little apprehensive, but his eager and tenacious character soon comes through. These
characteristics are the first ones that Russell and little Ellie have in common. Russell and Ellie
share the same resolve and interest for life, despite Ellie having a more independent and
outspoken personality. Carl's yin is balanced by Russell's yang. He balances Carl in a way that
Ellie, in my opinion, would have as an adult. As the film goes on, Russell is able to soften Carl's
hard attitude with the aid of Dug, who is essentially Russell in animal form. The campfire scene,
where Russell appears to be pouring his heart out to Carl, is where we first witness an
illustration of this. Russell's father hasn't been entirely present in his life, which seems to
account for his very instantaneous affinity to Carl. Even if it takes him a few more scenes to
admit it, Carl can clearly relate to Russell. When Kevin enters the scene, Russell's tenacity is
further demonstrated. Russell has his sights set on obtaining his Assisting the Elderly Badge at
the beginning of the film, but when he realizes that Kevin is in danger, he switches his attention
to trying to save her. Carl's tough veneer is starting to gradually crack under the weight of his
love and his resolve to support Carl and Kevin first, despite the challenges he would face.
Another link to Ellie is Russell's capacity to retain his innocence and lightheartedness in the face
of several near-death experiences. This is eventually what convinces Carl to change his mind
about Russell. The role of Russell in this film and the Pixar world is to inspire viewers to keep
trying in the face of challenges that they may seem to be insurmountable or out of their grasp.
He serves as a gentle reminder to always be nice and helpful to all living things, large and tiny,
and to never lose our curiosity about life. We could all use a bit more of his enthusiasm and
tenacity in our everyday lives. Because of Russell's inquisitiveness and resolve to help Kevin in
the proper way, Carl saw a spirit in him that was somewhat reminiscent of Ellie, and the two of
them grew close in a grandfather-grandson relationship.

That’s why I loved the character of Russell the most.
