WHAT YOU NEED, BEYOND THE GRADES AND TEST SCORES:
Don't be fooled, applying to grad school is a lot different from undergrad! Often
the programs are smaller and target a specific type of person with career
aspirations that fit just right. Here is a checklist to ensure you are taking the
unwritten steps to make sure you rise above the applicant pool.

Research the Program

For in-depth information and help, reach out to students and alumni.

Show Demonstrated Interest

Call or email the program with questions.
Attend info night/webinars for the program.
Tour the campus or department if you can (virtual tours too!)

Apply Early Admissions

Treat early admissions dates like your drop-dead due date.

Focus Statement of Purpose on Career Aspirations

Most statement of purposes are looking for: where are you going in
your career, and how will this program get you there?
Focus your statement of purpose using 1-2 key stories.

Ask About Scholarships

When you talk to the admissions office, ask if there are any merit-
based scholarships you can apply to for the program. You may find
some sweet cash to help you with tuition.

Identify Letters of Recommendation Writers Early

Especially if you attend a university with large class sizes, volunteer in a
