SYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

Week 3: Overview of SDLC

Tutorial

Case Study

Fancy Accessory is a company that sells fashion accessories such as necklace, bracelet,
earring and etc. The company has grown rapidly and so has the demand for the fashion
accessories.

The company employs 6 people and has office and warehouse space in an office park
designed to encourage small businesses.

Currently Fancy Accessory has relied upon manual data collection methods for taking
orders, billing, and managing inventory. With this new plan, the owner has decided to
employ you to develop a system for managing orders, billing and inventory.

1. Use the structured analysis concept called the systems development life cycle (SDLC)
to plan and manage the system development process. Describe activities and
functions engaged in the project.

- The SDLC is an organized approach used in organizations to develop an

information system. Development teams would have to go through different
development phases in the SDLC model which the systems planning, systems
analysis, systems design, systems implementation and systems security and
support.

2. Identify all deliverables for each step of SDLC for this project.

- The first phase in the SDLC model is systems planning where the problems and
desired changes in an information system is identified. The deliverable in this
phase would be the preliminary investigation report of the desired system of
Fancy Accessory. The system to be implemented should be able to manage the
company’s orders, billing, and inventory.

- The next phase is system analysis where fact-finding techniques are included to
build a logical model of the new system. The deliverable in this process is a
system requirements document. The system should be able to receive orders from
customers via a website and tally the orders to the company to ship them out. This
system should also be able to track the status of the order if it has been shipped or
received by the buyer. When customers make a purchase the all purchase history
of all customers should be stored in the system and given access to the company
to view them. Lastly, the system should have a function for the employees to
update the inventory if their products are restocked and to update the inventory
when a customer purchases a product.

- Systems design is the following phase where a physical model that satisfied all
the documented requirements for the system. This deliverable is the system design
specification which can the company’s website in which satisfies the stated
system requirements.

- System implementation is when a new system is constructed and the system is

installed. This phase allows the client which is Fancy Accessories and their
customers to begin using the fully functioning information system.

- Lastly is the systems security and support phase where the information system is
further design to make it more secure, reliable, maintainable and scalable for
future use. After several years from the implementation phase, the information
system can be updated to fix any bugs or functionalities in the system.

3. Discuss THREE (3) underlying principles for systems development that can be
applied by the development team in developing the new system.

- The development team should ensure consistency in management of the given

projects

- The system should be interactive and encourage user involvement

- The development team should be able to produce a complete and accurate design
specification and documentation of the systems development process.
