ASSIGNMENT 1 ENGINEERING STATICS EM1103

Q1 Two forces of 100 N and 150 N are acting simultaneously at a point. What is the resultant of
these two forces, if the angle between them is 45°?

𝜃 = 45°, 𝐹1 = 150 𝑁, 𝐹2 = 100 𝑁

Q2 Two forces act at an angle of 120°. The bigger force is of (F1 = 40 N) and the resultant is
perpendicular to the smaller one. Find the smaller force.

Q3 The forces 20 N, 30 N, 40 N and 60 N are acting at one angular points of a regular hexagon,
towards the other five angular points. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant force.

Q4 The spring of constant k = 2.6 kN/m is attached to the disk at point A and to the end fitting
at point B as shown below. The spring is unstretched when 𝜃𝐴 and 𝜃𝐵 are both zero. If the disk
is rotated 15° clockwise and the end fitting is rotated 30° counterclockwise. Determine a vector
expression in cartesian form for the force F which the spring exerts at point A. The magnitude
of the spring force is the constant K multiplied by the deflection (lengthening or shortening) of
the spring.

Q5 Determine the force P required to maintain 200 kg engine in the position for which 𝜃 = 30°.
The diameter of the pulley at B is negligible.

Q6 A woman is holding a 3.6 kg sphere in her hand with the entire arm held horizontally as
shown below. A tensile force in the deltoid muscle prevents the arm from rotating about the
shoulder joint O; this force acts at the 21° angle shown. Determine the force exerted by the
deltoid muscle on the upper arm at A and the x- and y-components of the force reaction at the
shoulder joint O. The mass of the upper arm is mU = 1.9 kg, the mass of the lower arm is mL =
1.1 kg, and the mass of the hand is mH = 0.4 kg; all the corresponding weights act at the
locations shown below.

Q7 A former student of mechanics wishes to weigh himself but has access only to scale A with
capacity limited to 400 N and a small 80 N spring dynamometer B. with this rig shown below he
discovers that when he exerts a pull on the rope so that B registers 76 N, the scale A reads 286
N. what is his correct weight?
